Chapter 197: Chapter 196: Preparing for the combat trial

Raphael settled into a seated position across from her, his expression serious. "Katerina has been commanding military forces for over three hundred years. She’s survived seventeen major conflicts, countless skirmishes, and more personal combat challenges than anyone has bothered to count."

He paused, choosing words carefully. "Her primary strength is exactly what you’d expect....pure, overwhelming combat ability. She’s mastered virtually every fighting style that exists in the supernatural world. Hand-to-hand, weapons, magical combat, tactical warfare. There’s no area where she isn’t at minimum expert-level, and in most she’s far beyond that."

"Her weaknesses?" Eve asked.

Raphael’s expression became more grim. "That’s the problem. Someone doesn’t head the Seraphim Court’s military forces for three centuries without having eliminated their weaknesses years ago. Or learning to compensate for them so effectively they might as well not exist."

"So she’s perfect," Damon said flatly. "Unbeatable."

"I didn’t say unbeatable," Raphael corrected. "I said she has no obvious weaknesses. Those are different things."

He looked at Eve directly. "Katerina’s fighting style is aggressive, dominant, overwhelming. She uses her physical superiority and centuries of experience to crush opponents quickly. She’s fast, strong, incredibly durable....even by supernatural standards. Her magical abilities center around combat enhancement....she can increase her own physical capabilities significantly, layer protective shields, and project that battle-lust energy as both weapon and defense."

"That’s what she did to the pack," Silas said. "The sexual energy projection. That’s combat ability?"

"Part of it," Raphael confirmed. "For combat alphas like Katerina, aggression and sexuality are intertwined. The energy she projects destabilizes opponents...makes males either want to submit or fight for dominance, makes females either defensive or aggressive. Either way, it throws people off their game, makes them react emotionally rather than strategically."

Eve processed this, her tactical mind working through implications. "So in the trial, she’ll be using that constantly."

"Absolutely. It’ll be the baseline of her approach...project overwhelming dominance, wait for you to make an emotional response, capitalize on whatever opening that creates."

"Fuck," Damon said, running his hand through his hair. "So you’re saying there’s no way Eve can win this. She’s fighting someone with no weaknesses, three centuries of experience, and abilities specifically designed to destabilize opponents." freeweɓnøvel.com

Silence fell over the training room.

Then Raphael smiled...a small, knowing smile that suggested he’d been waiting for exactly this moment.

"I never said she couldn’t win," he said quietly.

Everyone turned to look at him.

He stood and moved to face Eve directly, his amber eyes...so like hers...warm with something that looked like pride and certainty mixed together.

"Have you forgotten that your parents passed their powers to you, Eve?" he asked. "Not just in the genetic sense.....they literally transferred accumulated knowledge and ability directly to your consciousness through the pendant. You absorbed centuries of their combined experience in those dreams."

He reached out and tapped her temple gently. "The power is here. The knowledge is here. Your mother’s combat techniques, your father’s strategic thinking....it’s all accessible to you. The problem is...."

"I don’t know how to access it consciously," Eve finished, understanding dawning. "It comes in flashes sometimes, instinctively, but I can’t deliberately tap into it."

"Exactly," Raphael confirmed. "And we don’t have time to train you to do so deliberately. That kind of deep power integration takes months, sometimes years. We have...." He checked the time. "....approximately sixty-four hours before the trial begins."

"So what do we do?" Damian asked.

Raphael looked at Eve with absolute certainty. "We trust that when the moment comes....when you genuinely need it....your instincts will know what to do. Your parents’ knowledge isn’t just sitting dormant in your mind. It’s integrated with your own consciousness. In moments of genuine need, genuine danger, it will surface."

"That’s a hell of a gamble," Damon said.

"It’s the only gamble we have," Raphael countered. "But it’s not as risky as it sounds. Eve....you’ve already done this. Multiple times. When the assassin Zane attacked you, you didn’t consciously know how to reverse life-force draining, but the knowledge was there when you needed it. When you negotiated with Seraphine, you accessed strategic thinking that was beyond your months of training....that was your father’s political instincts working through you."

He held her gaze. "Your power is considerably greater than you realize. The challenge isn’t whether you have the ability to stand against Katerina. The challenge is whether you trust yourself enough to access it when it matters."

Eve sat with this, feeling the truth of it resonating through her. The dreams. The knowledge transfer. The moments when she’d done things that surprised even herself....those weren’t flukes. Those were her heritage manifesting, her parents’ legacy working through her consciousness.

"So the strategy is...what?" she asked. "Let Katerina think I’m overwhelmed, wait for the critical moment, hope my instincts kick in?"

"Not hope," Raphael said firmly. "Trust. There’s a difference. Hope is passive...wanting something to happen. Trust is active...believing it will happen and positioning yourself accordingly."

He began pacing, his instructor mode fully engaged now. "Here’s what we know: Katerina expects you to fight like a young werewolf Luna with basic combat training. She’s preparing for physical confrontation, possibly some minor magical ability, probably a lot of emotional reaction she can exploit."

"But I’m not that," Eve said.

"You’re not that," Raphael confirmed. "You’re a fully awakened succubus with Seraphim royal bloodline, trained in techniques Katerina won’t expect, connected to three alpha mates whose power you can draw on, and carrying your parents’ accumulated knowledge in your consciousness."

He stopped pacing and looked at her directly. "The key is making Katerina believe her assumptions are correct for as long as possible. Let her think you’re overwhelmed. Let her think she’s winning easily. And when she’s confident....when she’s dropped her guard because she thinks the fight is already over....that’s when you show her what you really are."

"Rope-a-dope," Damon said, recognizing the strategy. "Let her tire herself out thinking she’s dominating, then counterstrike when she’s not expecting it."

"Exactly," Raphael said. "Katerina’s arrogance is the closest thing to a weakness she has. Use it."

Damian spoke up, his tactical mind clearly working through scenarios. "What about the sexual energy projection? That’s going to be constant, aggressive, designed to destabilize Eve emotionally. How does she counter that?"

"She doesn’t counter it," Raphael said. "She absorbs it."

Everyone stared at him.

"Eve is a succubus," Raphael continued. "Sexual energy is literally her food source. What Katerina intends as a weapon....Eve can convert into fuel. It won’t be comfortable. Katerina’s energy is aggressive rather than pleasurable. But Eve’s nature can process it, can feed from it, can turn Katerina’s primary attack method into a power source."

A slow smile spread across Damon’s face. "That’s brilliant. Katerina will be pouring energy at Eve expecting it to destabilize her, and instead she’ll be making Eve stronger."
