Chapter 178: Chapter 177: Come with me
"I know," he said. "I know the timing is terrible. I know it doesn’t change anything practical. I know I’m still leaving when Eve needs me to. But I need you to know....." He cupped her face with both hands. "....I need you to know that this mattered. You matter. What we built here in this absurd arrangement your Alphas concocted.....it became something real. Something important."
Elena was crying in earnest now, her hands coming up to cover his. "I love you too," she whispered. "I’ve been trying not to. Trying to keep it casual, keep it light, protect myself from exactly this. But I failed. I love you."
Raphael pulled her into his arms, and she came willingly, burying her face in his shoulder while the tears came harder. He held her through it, his own throat tight with emotion he rarely allowed himself to feel.
"I’m sorry," he said against her hair. "I’m sorry that I can’t give you what you deserve. A partner who stays. Who builds a life with you. Who doesn’t have obligations that pull him away."
"Don’t apologize for having responsibilities," Elena said, her voice muffled against his shoulder. "I knew what this was from the beginning. I just....I let myself hope anyway."
They held each other as the evening deepened toward night, the window seat becoming a small island of shared grief for something that had been beautiful and was ending too soon.
Eventually, Elena pulled back enough to look at his face. Her eyes were red and puffy, her face blotchy from crying, and Raphael thought she’d never looked more beautiful.
"How long?" she asked. "Before you have to go?"
"Unknown," Raphael admitted. "Weeks, probably. Maybe a month. Eve needs more preparation before she’s ready to walk into the Court. And the political situation needs to develop more....we need to know which factions are genuinely supportive, which are hostile, what the landscape looks like before we commit to the journey."
"So we have weeks," Elena said. "Maybe a month."
"Yes."
She took a shaky breath. "Then....can we make the most of them? Can we stop pretending this is casual? Can we just....be together, really together, for whatever time we have left?"
Raphael felt something in his chest that was equal parts pain and relief. "Yes," he said. "Yes, we can do that."
"Okay," Elena said. She wiped her face with her hands, trying to compose herself. "Okay. I can work with that. I can....." Her voice cracked again. ".....I can love you for however long I get to love you, and then I’ll let you go when it’s time."
"Elena, you don’t have to...."
"Yes I do," she interrupted. "Because the alternative is pushing you away now, protecting myself from the hurt that’s coming. And I don’t want that. I don’t want to lose weeks with you because I’m afraid of how much it will hurt when you leave." She looked at him with clear, honest eyes. "I’d rather have the time and the hurt than neither." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
Raphael looked at this remarkable woman...this quiet, strong, genuine person who had somehow become essential to him....and felt something shift in his chest.
"There might be a way," he said slowly.
Elena’s expression shifted. "What do you mean?"
"When I leave with Eve...when we go to the Court...." Raphael was clearly thinking through this in real time, working out possibilities. "....we’ll need support staff. People to manage the day-to-day details. It would be.....it wouldn’t be inappropriate for me to bring a companion. Someone to...." He paused. "....to serve as personal assistant, essentially."
Elena stared at him. "You’re asking me to come with you? To the Seraphim Court?"
"I’m suggesting it as a possibility," Raphael corrected. "It would be dangerous. Court politics are lethal when mishandled. You’d be entering a world you don’t understand, with factions who would see you as leverage against me if they discovered how much you mattered."
He held her gaze. "But it would mean we didn’t have to end. Not immediately. It would give us more time. And if the Court situation stabilizes....if Eve successfully claims her throne and the factional wars settle..." He took a breath. "...there might be a future for us after all. One where my obligations are met and I’m free to choose what comes next."
"A future," Elena repeated, as if testing the word. fгeewebnovёl.com
"Possibly," Raphael said. "No guarantees. Court politics could go badly. The situation could become too dangerous for civilians. A dozen things could go wrong. But....it’s possible."
Elena was quiet for a long moment, processing this. Then: "Would Eve allow it? Will the Alphas allow it?"
"Eve would probably be relieved," Raphael said. "Having familiar faces in an unfamiliar environment would help her. And the Alphas...." He paused. "....they understand pack bonds and mate bonds. They’d understand what you’ve become to me, even if they’d never admit it directly. They wouldn’t stand in the way."
"So I could come," Elena said slowly. "To the Court. With you. As your....." She searched for words. "....as your companion."
"If you wanted to," Raphael confirmed. "If you were willing to accept the risks, the danger, the complications."
Elena looked at him...at this ancient, complicated, extraordinary man who had walked into her life through the most absurd possible circumstances and had somehow become everything....and felt her heart make the decision before her mind caught up.
"Yes," she said. "Yes, I want to come with you."
Raphael’s expression transformed...relief and hope and something that looked like the kind of joy he probably hadn’t let himself feel in decades. "You’re certain?"
"I’m certain," Elena confirmed. "I’m terrified and uncertain and have no idea what I’m getting into. But I’m certain. Because being with you....even in danger, even in a world I don’t understand....that’s better than being safe and alone here."
Raphael pulled her into his arms again, this time not in comfort but in fierce, grateful embrace. "Thank you," he said against her hair. "Thank you for being brave enough to choose this."
"Thank you for giving me the choice at all," Elena said.
They held each other as the night settled fully around them, and for the first time since Isadora’s arrival, the future felt like something other than inevitable ending.
Complicated, yes. Dangerous, absolutely. Uncertain in every possible way.
But not ending.
Not yet.
And maybe.....just maybe....not ever.
