Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Go Die
Gu’er ran behind a box in the corner to find the machete.
And find it she did.
Gu’er was acting on pure instinct. Having lived in this house in her past life, she knew exactly where everything was kept.
The machete had always been kept behind the box in the corner. When Gu’er first moved in, she’d been startled to see it and had asked Zhang Da about it, for which he had beaten her. Only later did she learn the reason: Zhang Da had offended someone, a local ruffian who had threatened to "take care" of him. Terrified, Zhang Da had procured a machete and hidden it in the house.
But the machete was never used. Gu’er remembered that in the second month of her marriage to Zhang Da, the ruffian had shown up with a group of men and beaten Zhang Da to a pulp. Zhang Da hadn’t even fought back. The machete had remained untouched, and even when they later moved to the city, Zhang Da had muttered a few angry curses about it.
So now, Gu’er’s hand found its mark instantly. She grabbed the machete and hefted it up.
Just then, Zhang Da caught up to her.
"You bitch! You must have a death wish! I’ll show you how I deal with you."
Spitting the threat, Zhang Da reached out to grab Gu’er.
A cold glint flashed in Gu’er’s eyes. The hatred from her past life and the grievances of this one all converged in that single moment as she swung the machete at Zhang Da.
Zhang Da never imagined Gu’er would actually dare to attack him with it. He had no time to wonder how she knew about the machete hidden in the corner. He scrambled to dodge sideways, but he was too close and she was too fast. He couldn’t evade it completely. The blade struck him squarely on the back of his shoulder.
Gu’er didn’t know how deep the cut was, but she heard Zhang Da’s bloodcurdling scream. She wrenched the blade free and swung down again.
Had anyone been there to see her, they would have noticed that Gu’er’s eyes were bloodshot.
Though Gu’er had been reborn, at her core, she was a simple, honest person. But as the saying goes, you should never push an honest person too far. When you do, they’ll fight for their life. And right now, Gu’er was fighting for hers.
Seeing Gu’er’s blade coming for him again, Zhang Da ignored the searing pain and scrambled out of the way.
When he saw that she didn’t stop after her swing missed—that she was raising the machete to charge him again—Zhang Da felt true fear. He knew she was fighting for her life and wouldn’t stop until one of them was dead.
Zhang Da valued his own life. He scrambled toward the outside.
Before, he had been the one chasing Gu’er. Now, she was the one chasing him.
"Help! A psycho is trying to kill someone!"
Zhang Da yelled as he fumbled with the door. He cursed his parents for not giving him two more legs; otherwise, he would have been able to run faster.
Zhou Mei and Zhou Feng’er hadn’t left. They had closed the door to the house but remained in the courtyard. Both of them hated Gu’er, so they had no intention of following Zhang Da’s plan to have the situation "discovered" the next morning. They wanted to wait until Zhang Da succeeded, then call people over to catch them in the act. That way, Zhou Gu’er’s reputation would be completely ruined. Her only choices would be to marry Zhang Da or die, as no one else would ever want her.
So Zhou Mei had pulled Zhou Feng’er aside to wait in the courtyard. They had heard the commotion from inside but hadn’t paid it any mind, assuming Zhou Gu’er was putting up a small fight that Zhang Da could easily handle.
But when they heard Zhang Da screaming for help, their hearts tightened. They rushed toward the door. They had to know what was happening. If Zhou Gu’er was fighting back, they needed to help Zhang Da. They couldn’t let Gu’er ruin their carefully laid plan.
The door burst open, and Zhang Da charged out.
"What happened?"
Zhou Mei asked, her voice low.
"That bitch is crazy! She’s trying to hack me to death with a knife!"
Seeing the two of them, Zhang Da’s panic subsided slightly.
"Useless. Too bad she didn’t hack you to death. You can’t even handle a single woman. Look at you, you’re pathetic."
Zhou Mei was furious. She thought Zhou Gu’er was just bluffing. ’How could she actually attack someone with a knife?’ In the darkness, Zhou Mei didn’t see the blood all over Zhang Da’s face and back.
Just then, Gu’er emerged from the house, the machete still in her hand.
"Zhou Gu’er, don’t even think about running! Behave yourself today, and we’ll still let you marry Zhang Da. If not, you can just go die!"
Zhou Mei’s voice was vicious. She wanted to marry Sun Jiaming, but Zhou Feng’er had told her that he had already taken a liking to Gu’er. She’d also said that he and Gu’er had spent an entire afternoon alone together on the mountain and had surely done something shameful. That was why Zhou Mei hated Gu’er.
Gu’er recognized Zhou Mei’s voice. In this life, they had only had one argument, yet here Zhou Mei was, colluding with Zhou Feng’er and Zhang Da to destroy her. Now, she was even telling her to die.
"Then you die first."
Gu’er’s voice was devoid of inflection, as cold as a demon crawling out of hell. She raised the machete and swung at Zhou Mei.
Zhou Mei had assumed Zhou Gu’er was just trying to scare her. She never dreamed she would actually swing.
Zhou Feng’er saw it happen and was scared to death. She wanted to pull Zhou Mei out of the way, but her hand didn’t move.
’If Zhou Gu’er just wounds Zhou Mei, their feud will only deepen, and Zhou Mei will never let Gu’er get away with it. But if Zhou Gu’er kills her... then Gu’er will have to pay with her life. And I’ll be rid of my annoying sister.’
’As for Zhou Mei, she’s always so damn arrogant, acting like she’s so much better than me. I wouldn’t feel too bad if she died.’
So Zhou Feng’er didn’t move. ’Even if Zhou Mei doesn’t die and asks me about it later,’ she thought, ’I can just say I was scared stiff and that’s why I didn’t help.’
"She’s crazy! Are you just gonna stand there and die?!"
Zhang Da saw it too. He gave Zhou Mei a quick shove, not caring if it helped or not, then let go and started running again, still shouting.
Zhou Mei was completely stunned. It wasn’t until the machete landed on her arm, sending a searing pain through her, that she finally reacted. She’d actually been cut. Zhang Da’s shove hadn’t been enough for her to dodge completely, and Zhou Gu’er’s blade had sliced into her arm.
The pain jolted Zhou Mei to her senses. ’Zhou Gu’er really is insane! She’s actually trying to kill me! If Zhang Da hadn’t pushed me, I’d be dead already!’
Zhou Mei let out a shriek, spun around, and ran for her life.
As Gu’er saw Zhou Mei turn to flee, she thought of bringing the blade down again, but instead, she lifted her foot and kicked her squarely in the butt.
The kick sent Zhou Mei stumbling forward, but she managed to stay on her feet. She paid the pain no mind and just kept running.
With Zhou Mei gone, only Zhou Feng’er was left standing there.
Zhou Gu’er raised her machete toward Zhou Feng’er. ’Her own sister... she had tricked her, delivered her to a man’s bed, all to destroy her.’ Gu’er had always known Feng’er was callous, but she never imagined she could be this cruel. freeweɓnovel.cøm
The moment Zhou Feng’er saw Gu’er raise the machete toward her, she also turned to run. But she wasn’t as fast. Gu’er’s blade slid down her back, and a cool sting of pain followed. Zhou Feng’er knew she was injured, but it didn’t feel serious.
She tried to run after them, but between the darkness, her fear, and her panic, she tripped.
Zhou Feng’er fell flat on the ground. Her chin slammed into the dirt, and her teeth bit through her lip, the pain instantly bringing tears to her eyes.
