Chapter 412: Chapter 410: Morning Sickness

Sun Jiaming came over partway through to check on Gu’er. Knowing she was alright, he told her to find him if she felt unwell, then went back to helping Liu Yuan entertain guests their age.

Firecrackers went off as the wedding procession returned. Onlookers and relatives all pushed and shoved, eager to get a look at the bride. Since they already knew who the bride was, Gu’er and Marina didn’t join the crowd, mainly because they were afraid of getting hurt in the crush.

During the wedding ceremony, Gu’er and Marina stood at the back. Listening to the cheers that grew louder and louder, a smile touched Gu’er’s lips. Weddings were always such happy occasions.

After the couple was escorted to the bridal chamber, the crowd split into several groups. Some stayed outside, some went indoors, and some followed the couple into the newlywed’s room. Gu’er and Marina found a less crowded spot to sit for a while.

After some more merrymaking, everyone started heading to the restaurant.

Gu’er rode in Li Zhi’s car with Marina. Dingzi had to drive other relatives, and Sun Jiaming was organizing other people into another car.

The restaurant wasn’t huge, but it was quite upscale. There were seven or eight tables of guests.

Gu’er and Marina were seated near the front. Aside from Liu Yuan’s parents and important relatives, their table was the closest to the head table.

The men and women were seated separately, so Sun Jiaming, Li Zhi, and Dingzi were on the men’s side. They were also helping to host, so they were quite busy.

On the women’s side, Gu’er didn’t know anyone besides Marina. She nodded to the others and spoke quietly with Marina. If someone struck up a conversation with her, she would respond politely for a bit. But if anyone tried to get chummy and ask about the shopping mall, she would refuse them outright, using her pregnancy and lack of involvement in business matters as an excuse.

When the food was served, many people started commenting on the dishes.

The food wasn’t as lavish as at her own wedding, but it was still quite good. There was chicken, duck, fish, and pork—all the essentials were there, so everyone was quite satisfied.

The banquet began, and people were encouraged to eat and drink. Gu’er didn’t stand on ceremony; she picked up her chopsticks and started eating. She was eating for two now and couldn’t let herself go hungry.

"Oh, Gu’er, please help us out. Just put in a good word. If my old man can really get into the mall, he’ll definitely do a good job watching the door for you. It’s better than hiring a stranger, right? If you let my husband into the mall, we’ll never forget your kindness. Don’t you worry. If you like this fatty pork, I’ll cut two pounds of the greasiest, most marbled meat for you every month. We won’t let you down. You’ll definitely get your fill."

One of Liu Yuan’s relatives had pulled up a stool and was now sitting next to Gu’er, pleading with her.

Gu’er had a piece of pork belly in her chopsticks. Perhaps because she had been poor before, she preferred fatty cuts when eating meat. She found pork belly delicious. Whether it was slow-cooked, made into red-cooked pork, served with pickled cabbage, or in a hearty northern stew, she loved it. She could eat a lot of it by herself. After getting pregnant, she hadn’t been picky at all and was eating even more than usual without a hint of nausea.

She was just about to eat the piece of pork belly. Maybe it was because that auntie of Liu Yuan’s had just offered to send her a couple of pounds of fatty meat every month, or maybe it was something else entirely, but suddenly she couldn’t swallow the piece in her mouth. Waves of greasy nausea washed over her, and a sickening feeling rose in her stomach. It was a sensation she had never felt before.

Gu’er forced herself to swallow the meat, fighting back the nausea. Then, that auntie used her own chopsticks to place several more pieces of pork belly into Gu’er’s bowl, smiling. "You like it, so Auntie will get you some more. Eat up, eat up! This pork is delicious."

Gu’er knew the auntie was just trying to suck up to her. But just a moment ago, she had seen the woman pick up food with those same chopsticks, eat it, and then suck them clean. She had even wiped her runny nose with her hand, given it a quick wipe, and then picked up her chopsticks to continue eating.

Gu’er’s stomach churned violently. ’It’s not that I’m being delicate or looking down on her. I’m not normally like this. But right now, for some reason, I just feel so sick. It’s like I’m extra sensitive all of a sudden.’

She tried to hold it in, but she couldn’t. Clapping a hand over her mouth, she ran toward the back.

"Gu’er!"

Marina didn’t know what was wrong with Gu’er. She called out anxiously and ran after her.

"What’s wrong with her?"

Someone nearby asked.

"It’s nothing. She’s pregnant, just some morning sickness. It’s normal. She’ll be back after she throws up. Everyone, eat!"

The auntie said this calmly, then urged everyone to continue eating. Inwardly, however, she was still plotting how to keep talking to Gu’er and get her old man a job at the mall. Then her family’s worries would be over.

Gu’er vomited her guts out in the restroom, feeling like she had even brought up bile.

After she was done, she came out of the restroom feeling weak all over. ’So this is what morning sickness feels like?’ In her past life, she hadn’t felt sick at all when she was pregnant with Zhang Juan. It seemed she had been so busy every day that she didn’t even have time to feel nauseous. She had thought it would be the same this time, but she never expected to be this sick.

"Gu’er, are you okay?"

Marina supported Gu’er. She could see that Gu’er’s face was pale, and she felt a little worried.

"I’m... oh."

Gu’er was just about to say she was fine when her stomach churned again. She rushed back inside, and this time, all that came up was water.

When she finally felt a bit better, Gu’er and Marina returned to the banquet. Liu Yuan and the others had already started making their toasts. Gu’er glanced over and saw Sun Jiaming at another table, being roped into drinking by another man.

At that moment, Gu’er longed to lean against Sun Jiaming’s chest and not think about anything. But she couldn’t go over to him, so she listlessly sat back down in her seat and took a few sips of water.

"Done throwing up? It’s fine, that’s how it is when you’re pregnant. You just eat after you throw up, and then throw up after you eat. Go on, eat."

The auntie started putting more food on Gu’er’s plate again.

Another wave of nausea washed over Gu’er. Looking at the meat, she really, truly couldn’t eat it. Even the pieces she had picked for herself were unappetizing now, but this time she didn’t run off to be sick again.

"Gu, what do you think about what Auntie was just telling you?"

The auntie asked, not giving up.

"Auntie, I’m sorry. You can see the state I’m in right now. I really can’t handle this. You should go talk to Liu Yuan."

Gu’er gave her a weak smile.

The auntie was about to say something else, but just then, Liu Yuan and Bai Xiaohua came over to offer a toast.

Liu Yuan was already handsome, and he looked even more dashing now. He had been drinking, and his face was slightly flushed. It wasn’t unattractive at all; in fact, it added a certain charm that was quite captivating.

Bai Xiaohua could only be described as pretty, but today she was the bride. Dressed in bright red, with her hair done up and makeup on her face, she looked more beautiful than usual. The happy blush on her cheeks and the joy in her eyes added to her radiance.

’No wonder they say a woman is most beautiful on her wedding day,’ Gu’er thought with a smile at the couple.

When Liu Yuan and Bai Xiaohua toasted Gu’er, they drank wine while she had water, as she couldn’t drink alcohol at the moment.

Gu’er offered her sincerest blessings, wishing them a long life together and to be blessed with children soon.

Marina drank a glass and offered some auspicious words as well, but her intonation was so strange that you couldn’t help but want to laugh at what she said.

"Eat, eat, have some more."

While Liu Yuan and Bai Xiaohua were drinking with Marina, the auntie once again placed two pieces of fatty pork on Gu’er’s plate. The nausea that Gu’er had just suppressed came rushing back. She clapped a hand over her mouth, shot Liu Yuan and Bai Xiaohua an apologetic look, and ran toward the back again.
