Chapter 396: Chapter 394: Insurance
Zhang Zhenguo had taken a major fall this time, but they weren’t doing so well either. All told, their combined losses were nearly two hundred thousand, which was no small sum.
"What’s done is done. Panicking won’t help..."
Before Gu’er could finish, Li Zhi cut her off. "How can I not panic? My head hurts just thinking about it. If only we could get some money from somewhere right now."
"Oh, Gu, Dingzi, Li, Sun... When Dingzi and I came, my father gave me some money. I didn’t realize you’d lost so much this time. I don’t really need it, so you can have it."
Seeing how anxious they were, Marina couldn’t bear it and offered to give them her own money.
"Is your money in US Dollars or Rubles?"
Gu’er asked urgently.
Li Zhi glanced at Gu’er. ’Gu’er probably wouldn’t take Marina’s money. They weren’t in dire straits yet. Even if they had to put up a sum of money for the government to build a nursing home after the New Year, it wasn’t that they couldn’t afford it. It’s just that after paying it, they would have to think twice before making any other big moves.’
"Most of it is in US Dollars, about fifty thousand. There are also Rubles, about twenty thousand."
Marina didn’t hide anything. She felt that since they had saved her life, and now they were in trouble, it was only right for her to help with the money she had.
Gu’er looked at Marina. ’I didn’t expect Marina to be such a rich woman. That’s a lot of money. But it makes sense. Marina’s father must have earned a lot over the years. With his two daughters going abroad, he would definitely give them money for their own security.’
"You should hold onto the US Dollars. This afternoon, have Dingzi go with you to exchange the Rubles. That currency is going to be worthless soon. After you exchange it, deposit all the money in a bank. This is money your father gave you for security, and we won’t take it. You keep it. You’re here by yourself, so you need to have some money on hand."
Gu’er truly had no intention of taking Marina’s money.
"Gu, it’s okay. Dingzi will take good care of me. I don’t need the money. You all can use it."
Marina spoke with genuine sincerity.
Dingzi’s gaze softened as he looked at her.
"We don’t need it. We have enough money on hand. Besides, I bought insurance for our shipment. Since it was robbed, the insurance company will compensate us. We won’t get back the full amount of our losses, but the compensation will be enough to cover our immediate needs. We really don’t need your money."
Gu’er’s words were just as sincere.
"Insurance? What’s that?"
Li Zhi asked Gu’er in confusion, and Dingzi looked at her as well.
Only Sun Jiaming nodded with understanding.
"It’s a company. You give them money, and if something happens to your goods or people, they’ll compensate you."
"When did you buy insurance? How come we didn’t know?"
Li Zhi was a little dumbfounded.
"Just before this shipment was sent out, I kept feeling like something bad was going to happen. I was uneasy, so I went to the People’s Insurance Company of China and bought a policy. If nothing had happened, we would have made a profit, and the cost of the premium would have been nothing. But if something did go wrong, the insurance company would compensate us, and we could minimize our losses."
Gu’er didn’t hide anything and told everyone. Speaking of insurance, people back then were still very unfamiliar with it, unlike later when advertisements for it were everywhere. She had been worried about the shipment to the Soviet Union, but she didn’t know the specific timing of events. That’s why she thought of buying insurance before the goods were sent out, as a safeguard for the shipment.
"Damn, you’re incredible! How did you even know to buy this insurance thing? If they’re really going to give us money, that’s fantastic! How are you so amazing? It’s like you can see the future. You told us not to worry about having so much stock, but I was secretly terrified we’d be stuck with it and unable to sell it. Now everything’s great! With the chaos in the Soviet Union, we won’t be able to ship goods from there for a while. That means the stock we’ve hoarded will be in high demand and will sell easily. Add your insurance to the mix, and I’m not worried at all anymore."
Li Zhi stared at Gu’er, his eyes sparkling as if she were some precious treasure. At the time, he’d had his doubts, but in the end, he had chosen to trust Gu’er, and that’s why they had stockpiled so many goods. He never expected her to be so right. With so much inventory, they wouldn’t have to worry about their supply source; it would last them a long time.
Dingzi nodded as well. Li Zhi was right. If Gu’er hadn’t insisted on continuing to stock up, they would probably have nothing to sell now.
A storm was raging in Sun Jiaming’s heart as he watched Gu’er. Li Zhi had said Gu’er was like a prophet, and though the speaker may have been careless, the listener took it to heart. ’It seems Gu’er really *can* see the future. Her insistence on the Liu Yuan matter, her insistence regarding the inventory... Gu’er had bought the insurance, and he had gone with her. At the time, he didn’t think it was necessary, but Gu’er had insisted, and he hadn’t stopped her. Now it was clear she had been right. But how could Gu’er know in advance? It was as if she could predict what was going to happen. Why?’
Sun Jiaming was baffled and a little uneasy. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Gu’er, but rather a fear of the unknown.
"I’m not as incredible as you make me out to be. I just thought a little further ahead. We are dealing with two different countries, after all. I just figured that if something were to happen, having insurance would be better. As for all that stock, I just had a feeling that Zhang guy wouldn’t last long, so I wasn’t afraid we wouldn’t be able to sell our inventory. If I could really see the future, I’d be something else. I wouldn’t be sitting here; I’d have made a huge fortune by now."
Gu’er let out a laugh. She didn’t want the others to suspect her, especially Sun Jiaming, because she had no way to explain it.
"That’s true. But you’re still incredibly capable. I’m convinced. From now on, whatever you decide, I’m on board."
Li Zhi gave her a thumbs-up. Even though Gu’er had said the insurance company would only compensate them for a portion of the loss, it was still money. The losses in the Soviet Union couldn’t be helped, but compared to Zhang Zhenguo, they were in a much, much better position. Not only had they survived this crisis, but they might even come out of it stronger. Other places had run out of stock, but their mall was still operating normally. That in itself was a show of strength. When people talked about them, they would see that their mall had the power, the capability, and the resources. This would solidify their mall’s foundation in the city.
"Now that Dingzi is back, when the time comes, he and I will go to the insurance company and explain the situation. They’ll conduct an investigation, so they definitely won’t pay out right away. Once they’ve confirmed the situation and all the procedures are complete, they will issue the payment."
Gu’er finished speaking, and the others nodded. They understood that everything had a process. As long as they got the money, that’s what mattered.
"This insurance thing is great. It looks like we should buy insurance for everything we do from now on."
Li Zhi said. He wasn’t as anxious anymore. ’Even though they had still lost money, a smaller loss was better than a total one. Besides, they were all safe and sound. Dingzi even brought back a foreign bride! That was a good thing. As long as they were all together, what was there to worry about? There would always be more money to be made. They could just earn it back later.’
Seeing that everyone had calmed down, Gu’er quietly let out a sigh of relief. ’The crisis is more or less over. It’s much better than constantly worrying about when the collapse would happen.’
