Chapter 156: Chapter 156: Li Zhi

Gu’er looked at the young man who had appeared behind her. After taking in his clothes, she studied his face. He looked to be about twenty-three or twenty-four, with sharp, well-defined eyebrows and large, expressive eyes. He had a high-bridged nose and nicely shaped lips, giving him a very masculine and righteous air.

’A man like him would make a great police officer. If he were an actor, he’d definitely play the hero,’ Gu’er thought to herself.

As Gu’er was sizing up the young man, he was doing the same to her. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

He had seen a girl staring blankly at the bicycle parking area and figured she couldn’t find a spot. Judging by her silhouette, she seemed young, so he struck up a conversation. He never expected that when she turned around, she would be so pretty. Her skin wasn’t exactly fair, but it wasn’t dark either—just a normal complexion. Her features, however, were lovely, especially her large eyes, which looked as if they could talk.

The young man’s smile widened.

"Are you talking to me?"

Gu’er glanced around and saw no one else nearby.

"Yeah. Can’t find a place to park?"

the young man asked again.

Gu’er nodded at him. ’There are rules for parking bicycles; you can’t just leave it anywhere and block the path.’

"Come on, follow me. I’ll take you to a spot."

When Gu’er didn’t move, he smiled and added, "My name is Li Zhi. I’m here for classes at the Adult Education University. What about you?"

’Oh? So he’s here for night school, just like me. In that case, he probably knows where to park.’

"Don’t worry, the place I’m talking about is just inside the courtyard. I know someone here who can let us park our bikes inside. It’s safer in there, so you don’t have to worry about it getting stolen. Parking outside isn’t safe; bikes get stolen from here all the time."

Li Zhi quickly explained, afraid she might think he was a bad guy—though he certainly didn’t look like one.

Gu’er looked at the young man, Li Zhi, and felt he was probably telling the truth. Since it was just inside the courtyard anyway, she decided to follow him.

Li Zhi hadn’t been lying. There was indeed a parking area inside the courtyard, but it was generally reserved for the school’s teachers or their acquaintances. Students were supposed to park outside.

Li Zhi found a man in his fifties, who seemed to be a gatekeeper or something similar. After exchanging a few words, the man let them park there.

Once her bike was parked, Gu’er thanked him. After all, if it weren’t for Li Zhi, she really wouldn’t have known where to put it. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

"Don’t mention it! We’re going to be classmates, so we’ll be seeing a lot of each other. It’s only right that we help each other out. By the way, what’s your name? What’s your major? Do you know where your classroom is? Tell me what you’re studying, and I’ll take you there."

Li Zhi was very enthusiastic, talking a mile a minute.

Gu’er wasn’t put off by him. Even though Li Zhi was talkative, she could tell he meant no harm. She didn’t hide anything and told him her name and what she was studying.

"Wow, you’re studying Enterprise Management? What a coincidence! I am too! We’re really classmates! Come on, our classroom is on the fourth floor. I’ll lead the way."

Li Zhi was pleasantly surprised. He hadn’t expected to run into someone from his own class. This meant he’d be classmates with this girl, Gu’er, for the entire next year.

’The thought of it was pretty exciting. Of course there would be girls in the class, but looks mattered. And who wouldn’t want to be around someone good-looking?’

Li Zhi snuck another glance at Gu’er. ’She’s so young, she probably doesn’t have a boyfriend yet, right? Her family must be pretty well-off for her to be studying here. Her personality seems nice, too. She’s poised, not petty or provincial, but not the wild and aggressive type either. I should spend some time getting to know her. If she’s as great as she seems, I could try to pursue her.’

As these thoughts ran through his mind, Li Zhi led Gu’er to the fourth floor.

When they reached the fourth floor, he turned around, a hint of surprise on his face. They had climbed all four flights without stopping. He was fine—he was a guy who worked out, so it was no effort for him. But Gu’er, who looked so delicate, wasn’t even flushed or out of breath. It didn’t seem right. ’My own sister is about her age, and every time she climbs stairs, she whines and groans like it’s the end of the world. Gu’er is different. She’s not fragile.’

Class hadn’t started when they arrived, but the room was already filled with people. As Gu’er and Li Zhi walked in, many heads turned to size them up.

The people who came to study here weren’t typical students; most had already entered the workforce. As a result, there was no one particularly young—almost no one under twenty. But no one was too old, either; everyone was under thirty.

The class was predominantly male, and when they saw Gu’er, many of their eyes lit up. They were excited to have a young, pretty new female classmate.

Many of the guys stared at Gu’er, hoping she would sit next to them. One of the bolder ones even let out a whistle.

Gu’er had never experienced anything like this in her past life. A faint nervousness fluttered in her chest. If she hadn’t already lived for so many years, she probably wouldn’t have known what to do with herself. Even so, a slight blush crept onto her cheeks.

’So this is what it’s like to be young? To have someone actually whistle at you? It wasn’t malicious, but... but it just felt so strange.’

"Gu’er, let’s sit here."

Li Zhi had already found an empty table. He glanced at the pack of wolves and their practically glowing eyes; he wasn’t about to let Gu’er sit at a table with any of them.

Gu’er glanced around. There were about six or seven other girls in the classroom, but none of them were sitting alone; they all had partners. She would have to share a table with someone. Since she didn’t know anyone else and Li Zhi seemed decent enough, she nodded and sat down with him.

Li Zhi was delighted. He shot a look around the classroom, as if to warn the other guys not to get any ideas about Gu’er.

Many of the other guys groaned internally. ’A pretty one finally shows up, and she’s already taken. We’ve got no chance.’

You couldn’t really blame them. Anyone who could afford to be here came from a family with some means. Plus, they were in the prime of their youth. This era was much more open than the sixties or seventies. They were a bolder, more passionate generation, eager for the freedom to fall in love and hoping for a grand, dramatic romance.

And if you were looking for a partner, you naturally wanted to find a good one. Their classmates were prime targets. After all, just studying could be dull; a little romance would be a nice diversion.

Gu’er wasn’t thinking about any of that. She took a pen and notebook from her bag and placed them on the desk. Her goal in coming here was to learn—to gain knowledge she could use in the future. ’As for a relationship, I don’t even need to consider it. I have Sun Jiaming. I don’t need anyone else.’

By six o’clock sharp, the classroom was nearly full. A middle-aged man in his forties walked in, a book tucked under his arm, and Gu’er’s life as a student began.

Good, not too late. It’s not even 4 AM yet. I have to leave at 7:30, so I can still get three and a half hours of sleep. It’s still raining outside. I hope it stops by the time I wake up.
