Chapter 444: Chapter 443: Don’t Touch Me
Wang Hai closed the door and turned to look at Meng Ye, only to see her standing there in a daze.
As Wang Hai walked over and reached out to touch her...
"Don’t touch me!"
Wang Hai’s hand froze in mid-air.
Meng Ye took two steps back and repeated, "Don’t touch me."
She then turned, went into the bedroom, and locked the door from the inside. freewebnσvel.cøm
Standing outside, Wang Hai listened to the sound of the lock and closed his eyes.
He sat down on the sofa, completely drained.
The standoff lasted until the afternoon, when Meng Ye emerged from the room, changed, and saw that Wang Hai was still home.
She asked, "I’m going out to buy groceries. Do you want to come?"
Wang Hai’s face lit up. "Yes! Wait a second, I’ll go change."
The two of them left together and went to the nearest market.
They bought a chicken, a fish, some beef, celery, bok choy, and a good amount of fruit.
On their way back, they came across someone selling tanghulu. When Meng Ye mentioned she wanted some, Wang Hai bought a few skewers.
"Why’d you buy so many?"
Wang Hai smiled. "Since you like them, I bought a few extra. I’ll eat whatever you can’t finish."
Meng Ye picked up a skewer and bit into one of the fruits.
"Sour."
Wang Hai tried one himself. "It is a little sour. Maybe you shouldn’t eat any more."
Meng Ye shook her head. "I want to eat it."
After finishing the skewer, she didn’t ask Wang Hai for another one.
They carried their groceries home just like that.
Once they were back, Meng Ye went straight into the kitchen. Wang Hai sat in the living room, his eyes frequently glancing toward the kitchen door.
That evening, Meng Ye prepared a whole table of delicious dishes.
As they sat down, Meng Ye asked him, "Want something to drink?"
Wang Hai looked at her. "Will you drink with me?"
Meng Ye nodded. "Okay."
Meng Ye was a classic lightweight who got drunk easily, but she didn’t refuse.
Wang Hai went and got a bottle of liquor, pouring just a tiny bit for Meng Ye.
Meng Ye said, "Fill it up. Otherwise, what’s the point?"
Wang Hai smiled. "Aren’t you afraid of getting drunk?"
Meng Ye looked at her glass. "I’m not. We’re home, anyway. And besides, you’re here, right?"
"Alright."
Wang Hai filled her glass to the brim, then his own.
"I remember our first time... it happened after you got drunk."
Meng Ye looked at him. "And didn’t you get me drunk on purpose that time?"
Wang Hai was surprised. "You knew?"
Meng Ye nodded. "Your intentions were written all over your face. How could I not have seen it? You just wanted to sleep with me, right?"
"Then why did you keep drinking?"
Meng Ye picked up her glass and swirled the contents. "And how do you know that wasn’t what I wanted, too?"
Wang Hai stared at her, stunned.
Meng Ye just smiled and took a sip.
She set down her glass.
"Eat. How does it taste?"
Wang Hai tried a piece of fish. "It’s delicious. I love anything you make."
Meng Ye picked up her chopsticks and began to eat as well.
They both ate and drank a great deal.
Wang Hai wasn’t drunk, but Meng Ye certainly was.
Her eyes were glazed over as she pointed at Wang Hai. "Wang Hai, I hate you. I hate you."
Wang Hai paused, then nodded. "I know."
"But I love you, too."
Wang Hai’s eyelids twitched. He just stared at her.
"Meng Ye, I love you, too."
Meng Ye wagged her finger. "No, you don’t love me. You love yourself. You’re a bastard."
Wang Hai agreed, "Yes, I’m a bastard."
With that, Meng Ye slumped onto the table and went silent.
Wang Hai walked over and scooped her up. He carried her into the bedroom, laid her on the bed, took off her shoes, and pulled the covers over her.
He sat on the edge of the bed, just watching her.
He reached out, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Meng Ye used to have short hair, but she’d grown it out because Wang Hai said he wanted to see what she looked like with it long.
"Meng Ye... don’t leave me."
There was no reply.
When Meng Ye opened her eyes again, she saw Wang Hai.
He was lying in bed beside her, fast asleep and facing her.
Meng Ye glanced at the time. It was already seven in the morning.
She sat up, pinching the bridge of her nose. ’I drank too much last night. I don’t even know when I fell asleep.’
After getting dressed, Meng Ye came out and saw that last night’s dinner was still on the table.
She walked over and cleared the leftover food into the kitchen.
Only then did she go take a shower.
When Wang Hai woke up, the apartment was empty. A jolt of panic shot through him, and he scrambled out of bed, running barefoot into the living area. It was definitely empty.
He froze. But when he went back to the bedroom and saw all of Meng Ye’s things were still there, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Meng Ye returned just before noon.
The moment she opened the door, Wang Hai rushed over.
"Where did you go?"
Meng Ye said, "I stopped by the office, and got a haircut while I was out."
Wang Hai stared at Meng Ye’s hair. It was short again—even shorter than before—and she had dyed it.
Wang Hai frowned. "Why’d you cut it short again?"
Meng Ye ran a hand through her new hair. "I like it. I think short hair suits me better, and it’s easier to wash."
She walked past him into the apartment. "I also brought back lunch. You must be hungry, right?"
Wang Hai followed her to the table and sat down, watching as she pushed the takeout containers toward him.
"Eat up. I want to go see a movie this afternoon. Do you have time to go with me?"
Wang Hai nodded. "I’ll go with you."
Meng Ye smiled. "Good."
Looking at her smiling face, Wang Hai felt a sense of dazed unreality, as if they had gone back to how their life used to be.
That afternoon, they went to see a movie. It was a new romance film with a sad ending, and Meng Ye’s eyes were red by the time it was over.
Wang Hai teased her, "It’s just a movie. They’re fake. What are you crying for?"
Meng Ye just shook her head. "You wouldn’t understand."
Afterward, they went shopping.
Meng Ye bought Wang Hai a few new outfits.
"You don’t have to buy things for me," Wang Hai told her. "Pick out a few things for yourself."
Meng Ye held a shirt up against his chest. "You can wear this for the New Year. Then you won’t have to buy anything new when the time comes."
She also bought him several ties and pairs of shoes.
The only thing Meng Ye bought for herself was a nightgown—a very sexy one. Wang Hai was stunned when he saw her buy it. Meng Ye was a fairly conservative woman; he had bought her similar things before, but she had always adamantly refused to wear them. He never expected she would buy one for herself.

Meng Ye said to Wang Hai, "I don’t want to go home tonight."
Remembering the nightgown she had bought, Wang Hai suggested, "A hotel?"
Meng Ye nodded. "Okay."
They went to the Crescent Hotel. Wang Hai was familiar with it, and besides, it had a nice atmosphere.
At the hotel entrance, Wang Hai even stopped to buy some condoms.
Meng Ye saw this but said nothing.
The moment they got in the room, Meng Ye went into the bathroom, taking the sexy nightgown with her.
A thrill shot through Wang Hai. Not wanting to waste any time, he called the front desk to book the room next door, then went over to take a shower.
By the time Wang Hai returned, Meng Ye still hadn’t come out of the bathroom.
Wang Hai sat on the bed, his eyes glued to the bathroom door.
Finally, the bathroom door opened.
Meng Ye emerged, wearing the nightgown she had bought earlier that day. The moment Wang Hai saw her, his mind went blank.
He shot to his feet.
His eyes roamed up and down her body. A hint of shyness still clung to Meng Ye, and she nervously picked at her palm.
She walked slowly toward him.
"Do I look good?"
Wang Hai nodded. "Beautiful."
Meng Ye sat on his lap, wrapped her arms around his neck, and looked at him intently.
"Take a good look at me."
Wang Hai could only nod instinctively.
