Chapter 6: Chapter 2: Ten-Digit Cashback, Cartier 1895 (3)

Zhong Mufeng raised an eyebrow. "How about we ply him with a few more drinks today? Once he’s drunk, we can try and get some answers out of him."

Jiang Li shook her head. "Forget it. We still have to go pick out our new house after the wedding."

"What about the one your mom and them bought before?"

Jiang Li shrugged nonchalantly. "We’ll just sell it."

They had never moved into that house, but Zhao Sinian’s family had paid for the renovations. She definitely didn’t want to live there with Shen Yanzhi.

Besides, she had the system now. Forget one house—even buying ten wouldn’t be a problem.

Zhong Mufeng pressed, "So from the sound of it, you’re not planning on having Shen Yanzhi pay for it?"

Jiang Li reached out and covered Zhong Mufeng’s mouth. "Hey! You ask too many questions!"

Even though Zhong Mufeng was her best friend, Jiang Li knew there were some things she could say and some she couldn’t.

There was a saying going around online: you worry about your friends suffering, but you also worry about them driving a Land Rover.

People say the human heart is unpredictable; it’s best not to test someone’s character.

The two chitchatted idly for about twenty minutes before a staff member brought over the wedding rings.

As the maid of honor, the rings were naturally entrusted to Zhong Mufeng for safekeeping.

Zhong Mufeng didn’t hesitate, opening the elegant box the moment she got her hands on it.

Once she got a clear look at the design inside, she couldn’t help but gasp. "Holy crap, talk about a double standard."

The matching rings she’d bought for Zhao Sinian were just simple, plain bands, probably costing less than eight thousand combined.

But the rings for Shen Yanzhi were the classic pear-shaped diamond cut from Cartier’s 1895 collection. They had to cost anywhere from the high hundred-thousands to over a million.

It really made a difference whether you were in love or not.

She was the one who was truly envious.

Zhong Mufeng placed the box into her handbag, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Jiang Li. "But where did you get this kind of money?"

Jiang Li cleared her throat. "You know those stocks I bought a while back? I made a little something, so I sold them all."

Zhong Mufeng knew Jiang Li liked to dabble in the stock market, so she didn’t suspect a thing.

Zhong Mufeng clicked her tongue and sighed. "You lucky girl, you’ve really got it made!"

Jiang Li wrapped an arm around Zhong Mufeng’s waist and buried her head in her friend’s chest. "You know it. If I weren’t lucky, how would I have ever met you?"

Zhong Mufeng was about to lose it. "Jiang Li! Say what you want, but don’t get your makeup all over me!"

But even as she complained, she gently patted Jiang Li’s back.

Another ten minutes or so passed before someone knocked on the lounge door. "Ms. Jiang, are you ready?"

Jiang Li stiffened, suddenly feeling tense all over. "Are his parents here already?"

If registering the marriage with Shen Yanzhi hadn’t felt real before, then this—the arrival of the Shen Family’s parents, the imminent wedding ceremony—this would make them a real, official married couple.

Seeing how nervous Jiang Li was, Zhong Mufeng shook her head and called out, "She’s ready!"

The staff member replied, "Alright, then let’s get ready for your entrance."

Jiang Li clutched her wedding dress, her eyes finding Zhong Mufeng’s in the mirror. "Qingbao, what do I do? I’m so nervous."

A thought struck her, and she bit her lip. "What if Shen Yanzhi’s parents don’t like me? What if they make him divorce me?"

Zhong Mufeng placed a hand on Jiang Li’s shoulder and comforted her gently, "Don’t overthink things right now. Since the Shen Family’s parents were willing to come, that means they approve of your marriage."

Jiang Li let out a long breath. "I hope so."

Zhong Mufeng gripped Jiang Li’s arm, giving her a boost of courage. "Relax. Don’t be nervous. I’ll go on ahead and wait for you."

’It was too late for second thoughts; being nervous wouldn’t help anything now.’

Not long after Zhong Mufeng left, prompted by a staff member, Jiang Li gathered her skirts and walked toward the ceremony hall with her head held high.

She stopped before the doors, where two waiting flower children obediently called out, "Miss."

Jiang Li nodded. The emcee’s voice drifted through the crack in the doors. "Let’s give a huge round of applause and welcome the star of our show as she makes her grand entrance!"

The doors were opened from within by the staff, and a spotlight immediately fell upon Jiang Li.

Jiang Li’s mind went blank. All she could see was Shen Yanzhi, standing on the stage.

At that moment, his back was to her. His posture was ramrod straight, hands at his sides, like a tall, proud pine tree.

The flower children scattered petals behind her, and the air was filled with endless applause, whistles, and gasps of amazement.

Though it was only a five-meter walk, it felt to Jiang Li like she had been walking for a century. Finally, she came to a stop behind Shen Yanzhi.

She raised her hand and gently tapped his back. Shen Yanzhi’s body went rigid for a second before he turned around.
