Chapter 23: Chapter 17: It’s Just a Few Million, Is That a Lot?
Guo Yao had no interest in a class reunion. To put it nicely, it was a gathering of former classmates. To put it bluntly, it was a competition of one-upmanship.
It was nothing more than comparing who had married well, who had a respectable job, who earned more money, who lived a better life...
Just as she was about to refuse, her gaze swept over Jiang Li and Zhong Mufeng, and a smile tugged at her lips. "Sure, I can go. I just so happened to run into two old classmates."
"Who?"
"Jiang Li and Zhong Mufeng."
As popular figures from their university days, the two were well-known even to students from different departments.
The woman on the other end of the line sounded excited. "Oh my god, no one’s heard from either of them since graduation! You’re so lucky to have run into them!"
Guo Yao couldn’t stop herself from rolling her eyes. ’I don’t know what there is to be so excited about.’
Still, she turned on the speakerphone. "Tell me about it."
"Zhenzhen, put it on speaker."
Guo Yao raised an eyebrow. ’Just as I expected.’ "Yeah, it’s on."
"Jiang, Zhong, hello!"
Jiang Li and Zhong Mufeng’s eyes met. They didn’t understand how they had gotten dragged into this.
In the end, it was Jiang Li who cleared her throat and replied, "Hello."
Compared to the other woman’s enthusiasm, Jiang Li’s voice sounded much colder.
"So, here’s the thing. We haven’t really kept in touch since graduation, and with New Year’s Day coming up, we’re organizing a class reunion. We were wondering if you and Zhong would do us the honor of joining us for a meal?"
To be honest, Jiang Li wasn’t interested in the reunion.
In her four years of university, the only people she had gotten along with well were her few roommates. She couldn’t even recognize everyone in her class, let alone feel any deep connection to them.
But Jiang Li didn’t refuse immediately. Instead, she looked at Zhong Mufeng.
After all, Zhong Mufeng loved a lively scene.
Sure enough, Zhong Mufeng’s eyes lit up, and she excitedly suggested, "Well, we’re not doing anything anyway. Why not go for a free meal? And see what happens?"
Jiang Li didn’t mind either way, but if she went to the reunion, "What about Shen Yanzhi?"
Zhong Mufeng raised an eyebrow. "Bring him along."
Back then, everyone had wondered who would be able to win over that untouchable flower. Now that Jiang Li had her wish, it was the perfect time to show him off.
Hearing this, Jiang Li immediately shook her head. "I don’t want to become the subject of their gossip."
As Zhong Mufeng’s best friend for several years, she of course knew what was going through her mind.
If her relationship with Shen Yanzhi was going well, then it wouldn’t be a problem.
But the problem was, she didn’t even know what Shen Yanzhi was thinking right now.
Although it was just a matter of asking, adults needed to have their own sense of dignity.
Zhong Mufeng shrugged nonchalantly. "That’s easy. Just send him home."
After speaking, she shivered. "Honestly, with him around, I really can’t relax at all."
Jiang Li didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but she could understand.
While she wouldn’t go so far as to say she felt uncomfortable, with Shen Yanzhi there, her eyes were always drifting toward him out of the corner of her vision, and she had no mind for shopping at all.
Just as Zhong Mufeng’s voice fell, Jiang Li’s phone rang.
She glanced at the caller ID: Shen Yanzhi.
Jiang Li frowned imperceptibly. "Hello? Did something happen?"
"Yeah, something came up. You and Zhong Mufeng have fun shopping. I’ll come pick you up when you’re done."
’Speak of the devil, what a timely call.’
Although she didn’t know what had happened, for Shen Yanzhi to leave after just one phone call, it must be urgent. She said considerately, "You go handle your business. I’ll have Xiao Xie pick me up later."
For convenience, she had bought another car and left it in the underground garage, just for situations like this.
She hadn’t expected to use it today.
’Looks like I’m pretty farsighted after all.’
Shen Yanzhi paused for a moment. About half a minute later, he relented, "Alright. In that case, don’t come back too late."
"Okay, I got it."
While Jiang Li was on the phone, Guo Yao sneered from the side, "Of course they’ll come. After all, when you get the chance to freeload a good meal, how could you possibly refuse?"
The woman on the phone asked doubtfully, "Zhenzhen, what do you mean by that?"
Guo Yao clicked her tongue, her tone full of smug satisfaction. "I mean that Jiang Li and Zhong Mufeng, those two popular figures from back in the day, are doing terribly now."
She paused, then added, "Also, my name is Guo Yao now. Stop calling me Zhenzhen all the time. It sounds awful."
"Zhen... Yaoyao, you can’t really say that. No matter how well or how poorly they’re doing, we’re still classmates in the end."
Guo Yao rolled her eyes. "Even Holy Mother Mary isn’t as sanctimonious as you."
If Jiang Li had only been 20% inclined to go to the reunion before, now, she was dead set on going.
’Guo Yao thinks I’m broke, doesn’t she?’
It was true that one shouldn’t flaunt their wealth, but she was now a rich woman with a net worth in the tens of billions. Showing off at the class reunion would be a piece of cake.
Zhong Mufeng had a fiery temper. Hearing Guo Yao slander her and Jiang Li like that, her face immediately darkened. "Hey, you’re just some nouveau riche brat from a property buyout. What are you so smug about? Haven’t you ever heard that there’s always someone better out there?"
Jiang Li put her phone back in her pocket and looked at the sales associate, who was standing there at a loss. She narrowed her eyes. "Aren’t you going to get the accompanying items?"
Probably because of Guo Yao’s "advice," the sales associate couldn’t help but lick her lips and force an awkward smile. "Ma’am, this bag is worth a million, and with the required additional purchases, the total will be around three to four million. Would it be convenient for you to verify your funds?"
Jiang Li raised an eyebrow. If Zhong Mufeng didn’t love this bag so much, with her temper, she would have walked out long ago.
’When you’re in the service industry, your job is to serve customers.’
’Not to doubt a customer because of a few words from someone else.’
’This was why more and more people preferred shopping online. At least there, they’d call you ’dear’ with every other word and wouldn’t treat you differently based on how much money you had.’
She took the phone she had just put in her pocket back out, opened Alipay, and prepared to transfer ten million into the account. Otherwise, she was afraid the sales associate would have a breakdown if she saw her real bank balance.
But then Jiang Li discovered that Shen Yanzhi had transferred ten million to her a few minutes ago.
The transaction note read: "Spend it however you want."
Jiang Li found it a bit amusing. ’This man really is... adorable.’
She handed the phone directly to the sales associate, letting her tap on the balance herself. "Can you prepare the items now?"
The sales associate quickly handed the phone back to Jiang Li. "I’ll go right away! Please wait a moment, ma’am!"
Seeing the sales associate’s attitude, Guo Yao frowned. "Wait, you really have the money to buy the bag?"
Jiang Li spread her hands. "It’s just a few million. Is that a lot?"
Zhong Mufeng’s face darkened. ’I really want to hit someone!’
’Just a few million? She doesn’t even have a few hundred thousand, let alone a few million.’
’Comparisons are truly odious.’
’But she loved seeing Jiang Li acting so cool and arrogant.’
’It was just so awesome, so cool.’
