Chapter 16: Chapter 10: If I Don’t Work, Will You Support Me?
"You’re Shen Yanzhi’s family, which means you’re my family now, too. There’s no reason to feel you don’t deserve them."
After speaking, she took Shen Yanzhi’s hand, her expression sincere. "If it weren’t for you and Mom, I would have never met such a wonderful man."
Shen Yuchu pouted. "He keeps a straight face all day. What’s so wonderful about that?"
As Jiang Li’s number one fan, everything about Shen Yanzhi just rubbed him the wrong way now.
’How did he get so lucky, marrying a woman as great as my sister-in-law?’
Zhou Jiawen irritably twisted Shen Yuchu’s ear. "You talk too much."
Shen Yuchu rubbed his ear, muttering under his breath, "Come on, at least let me save some face!"
Zhou Jiawen snorted. "Why do you need to save face in front of family?"
Since she’d put it that way, Shen Yugang had no choice but to swallow his pride and accept Jiang Li’s gifts.
Just then, a housekeeper came out to announce that dinner was ready. He tilted his chin. "Alright, let’s go in and eat."
Shen Yanzhi had already mentioned the dishes Jiang Li liked in the family group chat, so more than half the food on the table was her favorite.
She looked at Shen Yanzhi with some surprise and a gentle smile. "Thank you!"
Shen Yanzhi’s Adam’s apple bobbed. "There’s no need for such formalities between husband and wife."
Jiang Li suddenly leaned in and teased, "Then how about I use kisses to thank you from now on?"
Shen Yanzhi choked on his own saliva. "COUGH, COUGH, COUGH—"
The commotion was so loud it drew everyone’s attention.
Jiang Manshu asked suspiciously, "Yan Zhi, what’s wrong with you? Did you catch a cold?"
Shen Yanzhi covered his mouth and gave a couple of light coughs, forcing himself to calm down. He shook his head. "I’m fine."
Jiang Manshu glanced at Shen Yanzhi. "It’s easy to catch a cold this season. You two should be more careful. Don’t choose fashion over warmth."
Shen Yuchu piped up teasingly, "Mom, what do you know? Big Brother did it so he could pretend to be wearing a matching couple’s outfit with Sister-in-law."
Jiang Li froze and looked at Shen Yanzhi, questioning him with her eyes.
’No wonder he had to change his jacket right before we left. So that was the reason.’
Shen Yanzhi averted his gaze. "No, don’t listen to his nonsense."
The corners of her mouth, which had been turned up, slowly flattened. "Oh."
Although Shen Yanzhi wasn’t one for words, with Shen Yuchu around, the meal was still quite pleasant.
The moment they put down their chopsticks, Jiang Manshu looked at Jiang Li expectantly. "It’s getting late. Why don’t you stay the night here?"
Jiang Li didn’t mind. She wasn’t a picky sleeper and could fall asleep anywhere.
She subconsciously looked toward Shen Yanzhi, waiting for his response.
Shen Yanzhi thought Jiang Li was reluctant and shook his head in refusal. "Let’s not. We don’t have any of Xiao Li’s clothes here, so it wouldn’t be convenient."
Jiang Manshu’s face immediately lit up with a smile. "I’ve already prepared everything for you!"
She had started preparing the moment Shen Yanzhi said he was bringing Jiang Li home.
A huge wardrobe, stuffed full of clothes.
Hearing this, Jiang Li immediately made the decision. "In that case, let’s stay for the night."
If Shen Yanzhi didn’t have a good relationship with his family, it wouldn’t matter if they stayed or not.
But as they say, you follow the man you marry.
She was already married to Shen Yanzhi; she should give him the proper courtesy he deserved.
Perhaps because she hadn’t rested well, Jiang Li kept yawning after dinner.
Jiang Manshu had originally wanted to chat with Jiang Li for a while, but seeing this, she waved her hand in resignation. "You two should go rest first."
This was Jiang Li’s first time in Shen Yanzhi’s room, and it was just as she had imagined.
The furnishings were simple, with a black, white, and gray color scheme that felt devoid of any warmth.
The only exception was the bright red four-piece bedding set on the bed, which looked very festive.
Shen Yanzhi’s mouth twitched. "Mom must have done this. If you mind, I’ll have someone change it."
Jiang Li waved her hand. "Forget it, there’s no need. This is a sign of Mom’s good intentions."
She yawned, walked over to the wardrobe, and was stunned by the clothes inside.
The wardrobe was filled with nothing but white shirts and various suits.
Hers, on the other hand, were a kaleidoscope of colors—she had almost collected the entire rainbow—and they came in all sorts of styles.
The entire wardrobe was packed to the brim. Jiang Li suspected the closet’s size was the only thing that had limited Jiang Manshu’s enthusiasm.
After rummaging through the wardrobe for a good while, she finally found a slightly more conservative set of black silk pajamas.
She turned around and bumped right into Shen Yanzhi’s chest.
Jiang Li looked up, her eyes misty from the impact, and looked at Shen Yanzhi, her voice tinged with mock annoyance. "What are you doing?"
Shen Yanzhi’s Adam’s apple bobbed. "Let’s shower together."
Hearing this, Jiang Li’s face instantly turned bright red. She refused loudly, "No way!"
They might have tried every position already, but that was with the lights off.
If she showered with Shen Yanzhi, she was afraid she’d pass out from excitement.
After all, she had experienced it firsthand just last night.
Shen Yanzhi was a little disappointed, but he didn’t push it. "Then you go first."
Jiang Li kept her head down, the tips of her ears red as she trotted toward the shower.
Once Jiang Li was out of sight, Shen Yanzhi took a bathrobe from the wardrobe, turned on the air conditioner, and went to the communal bathroom out in the hall.
However, while it was called a communal bathroom, it was basically a private one.
The Shen Family home had four floors. Jiang Manshu and her husband lived on the second floor, Shen Yanzhi on the third, and Shen Yuchu and his wife on the fourth.
They each had their own space and didn’t bother one another.
Jiang Li had been feeling a little shy, but after her shower, she saw a message in her company’s group chat and felt like she was about to explode.
That damn scumbag Zhao Sinian actually had the nerve to claim in the group chat that she had cheated on him, dumping him as soon as she’d hooked up with a rich guy.
It was absolutely ridiculous!!!
She had originally planned to just quit and forget about her last paycheck; it wasn’t like she was short on money now.
But with Zhao Sinian slandering her like this in the group chat, she had to make him pay a price one way or another.
Since he was being shameless, he couldn’t blame her for being ruthless.
Shen Yanzhi had shifted positions several times on the bed. When he heard a noise, he immediately grabbed the phone from his nightstand, leaned back against the headboard, and watched Jiang Li out of the corner of his eye.
But when he saw the dark expression on Jiang Li’s face, he couldn’t help but frown and put down his phone. "What’s wrong? Did something happen?"
Jiang Li opened her mouth, but the words on the tip of her tongue were swallowed back down.
’She wasn’t sure if Shen Yanzhi would want to hear about this kind of thing.’
She shook her head and forced a strained smile. "It’s nothing, just some work stuff."
Shen Yanzhi knew Jiang Li was definitely hiding something from him, but since she wasn’t willing to talk, there was no point in pressing her.
He sighed silently. "If you’re unhappy at work, you can quit."
He didn’t say things like "You should stop working," or "I’ll support you."
After all, judging by Jiang Li’s spending over the past two days, she had more money than he did.
He didn’t have the guts to say something like that.
Jiang Li put down her phone. "I was just thinking that."
Then, on a whim, she asked, "If I stopped working, would you support me?"
A deep glimmer flashed in Shen Yanzhi’s eyes. "I’m your husband. Isn’t it my duty to support you?"
