Chapter 313: I Have Been...! [Book 95% Done!]
Dimitris and Glenn knew that they had to find Rachel quickly but they had to trust her that she could handle herself for the night.
There was nothing they could do right now even if she managed to survive.
Dimitris might not want to believe it but if she could survive the night then they would search for her in the morning.
They owed her that much and if she had turned into a zombie then it was up to them to make sure she didn’t wander and put her down.
That was the kindness they could do for her but Glenn knew deep down that this wouldn’t be the case.
"You’re injured..." Dimitris pointed out, realizing that Glenn’s clothes were gradually being soaked in fresh blood.
It wasn’t just in one place either and the fact that Glenn wasn’t even aware of this due to the adrenaline coursing through his veins.
"Huh?" Glenn questioned, touching his torso and realizing that there was a stinging pain resonating from that part of his body.
There was nothing that could be done regarding this but Dimitris knew it needed to be treated because there was no telling what would happen if the flesh of the undead was mixed within.
"Take off your shirt, we need to clean your wound," Dimitris instructed even though Glenn didn’t think this was necessary.
There was so much to do that this seemed to be the least of their problems but he knew that Dimitris wouldn’t let him catch a break until he did as he commanded.
Glenn took off his shirt but for some reason, the part of his body that hurt clung to that part of his shirt but Glenn managed to get it off.
"There... Happy now?" Glenn questioned but the look on Dimitris’ face was anything but happy.
"What? You act like I have been bitten..." Glenn muttered but Dimitris didn’t say a word but he didn’t need to, Glenn knew what his face meant. ƒrēewebnovel.com
"I have been bitten, haven’t I?" Glenn muttered in a moment of defeat as he looked down at his torso.
There was a huge bite mark embedded on it amid little scratches from different parts of his body that had insignificant consequences.
"I guess there’s no need to clean the wound, is there?" Glenn questioned but Dimitris couldn’t believe it.
Dimitris simply sighed, he knew that there was nothing that could be done but he wasn’t going to make Glenn fear his fate.
"I don’t think there is..." Dimitris responded, he processed this rather fast and realized that his friend was about to die.
If it was the arm or leg, they would have tried to sever the affected part even if he might bleed out or the infection might have spread too far but there would be hope.
However, there was something wicked about having no hope and this was Glenn’s fate.
"Hahaha!" Glenn couldn’t contain his laughter, the irony of it all.
"What’s funny, I think it is too soon for you to lose your mind, the fever shouldn’t have set in yet," Dimitris responded, he was being so logical regarding the situation.
"I just realized that I survived a lot longer than I thought possible... You know, all my life I never saw anything true and when my wife died that was the only time I wished to see it all through.... Because I knew, if I died, her memories would disappear along with me... I couldn’t live a life without knowing her," Glenn said.
"You will soon meet her, my friend," Dimitris finally said, his voice stern as he knew he needed to be the pillar of strength for Glenn otherwise he might crumble.
"You called me friend... All it took was for me to be bit," Glenn teased to which Dimitris let out a faint snicker.
"Are you scared?" Dimitris asked his friend, he knew that he too would suffer this fate one day and had mixed feelings about it.
He hated that Glenn was dying out here but there was no telling how long he had before he transitioned.
"I don’t know... I know I get to see my wife but what if I don’t find her in heaven?" Glenn questioned, scared that at the place he was going, he might never be able to see her.
"You don’t need to worry about that because I think you’re going to hell..." Dimitris responded.
For the first time in a long time, Dimitris let down the tough guy persona and was speaking to Glenn on a more personal level.
"Hahaha! You wish!" Glenn responded but this only showed that they had a deeper relationship than assumed by everyone.
They were friends in their past lives or rather, it was safe to say that Dimitris didn’t respect Glenn because he was kind of a coward.
And this was one of the reasons he opposed his sister marrying him but after the world fell, Glenn stepped up his game.
He became the man that Dimitris never thought he could be even if it came at the cost of his sister’s life.
Dimitris never once blamed Glenn for her death because he might have been a coward but he was a man that would die for his wife despite his cowardice.
And there was no doubt that Glenn was the one who loved her the most in this world.
But his journey was coming to an end and he lived a life he could be proud of.
"I’m sorry this happened to you, Glenn...You should never have come out here. We should never have tried to save them," Dimitris said.
"Don’t do that..." Glenn warned as the adrenaline had worn off so he was feeling all the strain on his body from the earlier fight.
"It is no one’s fault but my own. I saved people, I saved kids..." Glenn was proud of this because he chose to do the right thing even though the right thing potentially cost him his life.
He had no regrets and he didn’t want Dimitris to have any either.
"I wish I could say goodbye to everyone..." Glenn said to which Dimitris rummaged through his flak jacket to bring out a piece of paper and pen.
Glenn was surprised he had this as these weren’t essential tools for survival but Dimitris carried everywhere with him in case he met this fate.
He wanted his last words written so he doesn’t die unknown and when Glenn realized this, his heart sank.
Dimitris was scared of dying and that made his actions all the more admirable, he put himself in danger every single day despite his fear.
It took a different kind of strength for the fearful to act fearless but everything was unraveling right now.
But there was one certain thing, Glenn would be dead in a few hours.

Rachel got back to the camp but she was covered in blood, she was aware that this could potentially cause trouble as someone quickly approached her to ask her where she went.
Only then, recognise that she was covered in blood but this was fresh blood.
It couldn’t be the blood of the undead and in no time, she was apprehended.
Rachel didn’t even bother explaining because she had no idea what just happened.
All she could do was watch and Corey picked up on this, whatever happened.
She wasn’t the one that did it as he noticed that one of his men was missing.
Corey knew the kind of people under him and there was no way that they wouldn’t want to have a taste of Rachel.
It was now or never as the chances of them making it back safely were unlikely, they had already lost quite a lot of men so it wouldn’t be strange if Rachel didn’t return.
"Let her go..." Corey instructed and everyone was shocked because he allowed them to do whatever they wished to do with anyone.
However, even he wasn’t stupid enough to do anything in this situation because he understood what was at stake.
"Take me to where he died," Corey said. Rachel was surprised that he was acting like a sane person considering how psychotic he was, nothing compared to Sam but he was a threat to her. It would be best if he died here.
They arrived there in no time and the state of his body instantly told Corey that there was something or someone there.
And if it could do this, there was no doubt that it wasn’t human, which meant that they weren’t safe.
"Spread out, find whatever did this and kill it," Corey commanded, this was the right call to make as they couldn’t rest if they didn’t identify the threat even if they were running on fumes.
They had the necessary weapons to put an end to any threat but he also entertained the possibility that they had encroached onto unfamiliar territory.
They were too far in however to simply turn back so they had to make the best of this situation.
However, there was one question that Corey had, why was Rachel the only one to return?
