Chapter 293: Sam Connects The Dots!

Sam was here but not once was his guard down, he couldn’t explain it but his gut was telling him that there was something off about this.

He knew that this was unlike Jason, Jason wasn’t the kind of person to assemble an army but then again, it had been so long since he had seen him so there was no telling what kind of person he was anymore.

Sam noticed that the others barely had any sense of self, they weren’t as self-aware as him making him question if they were humans.

He didn’t even trust the woman before him and he had no reason not to other than his gut feeling.

If anything, this was their only chance at ending the zombies that roamed the area; however, this didn’t halt the fact that they, themselves, were already infected.

Sam knew that there must be something wrong if the very thing responsible for this mess was somehow speaking to them.

This also told him that Jason was somehow connected to this, which would explain a lot especially when back in HELL; he fought like a lunatic with no regard for his health to save them.

It was all adding up but Sam knew he couldn’t sit on this for long, he had to find out more information.

But there was no way it could be whatever this was, the fact that it led him to destroy that strange glowing rock that had assimilated the building.

It couldn’t be a trap, could it? Wouldn’t Jason have warned him that the meteorite was sentient if it was him because it nearly killed him?

That was one of the few times Sam was caught off guard as it was inconceivable that a non-animated building came to life.

There was no way that Jason would let him walk into such a place blindsided so was the objective to have him fall there?

And once it wasn’t successful, Jason told him to run to maintain the illusion of a trusted ally.

The more Sam thought about it, the less it made sense but he wasn’t going to let this be known.

He planned to keep this information to himself because there was no benefit in letting it slip.

Sam realized it might not be Jason he was speaking to all along.

By asking Sam to destroy the meteorite; it effectively drew him into the range of the attack.

The zombies that came rushing at him, it was like they were waiting for him but that was the strange thing, zombies were attracted to the fragments yet it felt like something had them on standby.

Sam was a paranoid man but the lady that was with him noticed him lost in his head.

She approached him but she froze in place as it felt if she took another step and entered his range, she would lose her head.

This wasn’t just Sam lost in his head but the killing intent that came with it was exceptional.

The thing about this was that no one knew how evolved zombies were made or created.

It was believed that they gained consciousness through prolonged contact with the fragment.

However, after death, the brain is deprived of oxygen and becomes useless but was this the case when they came back to life? freeωebnovēl.c૦m

That wouldn’t be plausible because the fragment hasn’t shown any ability to heal the dead.

If it couldn’t be healed, it meant that the brain would remain in its default dead state and should the fragment evolve at all, it should heal the brain.

That meant that the evolved zombies couldn’t have shown signs of evolution after death but before. At least the ones capable of intelligence as opposed to the abnormal ones that lacked any form of intelligence apart from those abnormalities.

There was no telling what Sam was up to for a year before he made contact with Clementine but Sam was getting information regarding how the zombies operated.

Especially after fighting off that evolution and his work with the doctor, Sam knew a lot more about these zombies than most did but he hadn’t made this connection until now.

The evolved zombies were humans like them that became corrupted by the fragment.

This gathering wasn’t to fight back against the undead, it was to add to their army and the last requirement for that was...

"Death..." Sam muttered under his breath but this killing intent was already felt by everyone present.

Sam chuckled before facing them all, he realized that they knew he had figured it out.

The lady before him was like Sam, she was the only one here that still had complete control of her thoughts.

"Fuck! You fuckers had me!" Sam laughed out loud, he couldn’t believe he fell for something so obvious but he had finally connected the missing piece to this elusive puzzle.

Sam’s laughter slowly regressed into a chuckle until there was no sound left.

The look in his eyes changed and all the humans present got on guard, including the lady that he had first encountered.

"W-What are you doing?" She questioned Sam, they had an understanding so why was he turning against them?

"DO YOU NOT WISH FOR HUMANITY TO SURVIVE!?" She barked at him, she knew that Sam stood no chance against multiple people but this was only because she didn’t know him.

She had to try to establish a common ground before things could escalate.

"Humanity?" Sam questioned with a smirk before pointing in their direction.

"Oh sweetheart, there is nothing human about us. We are monsters who finally let down their mask but..." Sam paused as he bent to pick the dagger in his immediate proximity.

"... I’m something much more than a monster," Sam declared and upon this sentence, the others charged at him in a heartbeat.

The rhythm in which they attacked felt far too organized to be random but only Sam noticed this.

However, this was just a casual Tuesday to him for he had faced far worse than this.

The first human that got close to him tried to slash his neck with a knife it had in hand but Sam used a rather peculiar technique to both parry and counter-attack in the same breath by hitting the inside of his elbow with one hand while simultaneously slamming his fist into the back of the assailant’s hand to change the trajectory of his attack.

This made the knife slice open his own throat with Sam ending it by digging his dagger at the top of his head, he wasn’t about to let them come to life.

However, the others stopped, no one tried to approach him, terrified by what they had just seen.

Sam was covered in blood and had a mad look on his face.

"What are you...?" The lady questioned, stumbling back.

"Me? I’m just Sam," Sam responded with a big ol’ goofy smile.

Of course, I wish to thank my other readers, both the silent and the ones that interact!
