Chapter 135: New Territory, New Enemies?

Jason was faced with a decision that could potentially jeopardize whatever it was that Franklin had in mind.

"You know what Chronos? Not today," Jason said, he knew that Chronos granted him quests and these quests always had a significant say in how future events played out.

But he has never denied Chronos because he feared the penalty that came with it.

"I’m not listening to you, if you want to take my eyes then you can do so but just know, you will throw away your chance at ever being complete," Jason threatened the system because he had leverage.

"You know, Chronos... Something tells me you couldn’t enforce the penalties given," Jason was putting one and two together but he wasn’t entirely sure.

He did, however, gaslight himself into speaking with full certainty otherwise Chronos would have picked up on this.

"That is why you needed the update, you couldn’t interact with the real world otherwise so you gave me quests that would make me need your help..." Jason started this conversation but the more he spoke, the more he was realizing that everything he said made sense.

"Chronos, you can’t do anything, can you?" Jason questioned his system,

If Chronos could interact with the real world through Jason, then that update wouldn’t have contained that option.

The fragments that Chronos said it needed to become whole meant that it wasn’t at full strength.

"If you can, now is the time. Take away my eyes or my arms but forget about ever becoming whole. I’m done with you ordering me around," Jason wanted Chronos and Chronos remained quiet.

Jason realized that Franklin was trying to de-escalate the situation because these people might view them as trespassers, it was their duty to prove that they meant no harm.

Jason tossed his weapon over the car before raising his hands.

Franklin looked at Jason and was impressed that the young man caught on.

Franklin looked at Clementine and gave her a nod, that was the signal for her to let go of the man.

"Settle down Elliot, now isn’t the time for tantrums," Franklin said as he too got up to his feet with his hands raised before the rest followed suit.

"Hey! Hey! We don’t mean any harm!" Franklin said but the fact that they hadn’t opened fire yet told them that these people might be willing to negotiate.

Jason’s eyes, however, caught something that everyone else missed.

They might have all thrown their weapons to show their surrender so why was Elliot reaching for his back?

Jason realized he was removing a pistol and this could easily escalate because they not only had their hands up, they were unarmed so if these people did open fire.

They would all die, Jason realized that Chronos wasn’t asking him to eliminate the "threat" just because it felt like it, but rather because it saw this coming.

Did this mean Chronos had some sort of precognition that allowed him to sneak a glimpse into the future?

Jason reached for the knife in his back pocket and jammed it into the back of Elliot’s head.

Jason didn’t know why he chose to kill him when he could have easily opted to knock him out but he couldn’t take any chances.

What if he failed to knock him out and this allowed Elliot to complete his task,

Jason wasn’t exactly a fighter and he closed his eyes as the blood trickled down his fingers.

Everyone present was taken aback by this, including Clementine because of them.

It looked like Jason had just taken a life in cold blood.

"W-What the fuck is wrong with you!?" The man pointing the gun at them asked.

This was strange, it was random and they now viewed them as a bigger threat than they were.

"He had a gun and he was going to kill you," Jason said and Franklin sighed the moment he heard this.

Elliot has always been stubborn, he made a poor judgment in his selection but Franklin didn’t know that they would encounter people that would shoot.

"That fool..." Franklin whispered, the enemies couldn’t see their lower body and this allowed Franklin to communicate with Jason and Clementine with his fingers.

[Ding!]

[Quest complete!]

[Reward 100 EXP!]

Jason knew the EXP was higher because Chronos understood the implication of human life but for some reason, Jason didn’t feel bad about it and it scared him.

Jason didn’t know what he was turning to but

"We have to get rid of him because he doesn’t want things to go peacefully. You did kill two of my men," Franklin said and the man that approached stopped his advances.

He had on a strange mask so they couldn’t even see the person’s face but they knew it was a man.

"You killed your own and think we would trust you after that? And by men, that means you’re the one the leader of these fuckers! What’s stopping us from killin’ you guys!?" The man was on edge and rightfully so but Franklin knew his words would determine the course and tempo of this conversation.

"We came all the way from Albany... We didn’t mean to trespass and we’re willing to work with you. No one else has to die today," Franklin said and the man was skeptical.

He looked back at the person that he was with, that one too had a mask.

They were hiding their identity like they had something to hide from which was strange.

"Albany? You’re a long way from home..." The man behind said but he didn’t leave his position.

"We are and that is why we’re willing to do anything to make this work. We just need some food and supplies then we will be on our way." Franklin responded. ƒгeewebnovёl.com

"Food and supplies aren’t so easy to come by. That is why we’re doing this in the first place," The man responded, judging from the silence of the man who initially approached.

It was safe to say that he was talking to the head.

"Then I believe we can help each other," Franklin suggested but the man that had approached them was suspicious.

"The car, where did they go? Are you the only ones or you’re working with them?" He barked and Franklin raised a brow in confusion because he had no idea what this person was talking about.

Clementine realized that they were this paranoid and defensive because they had enemies that weren’t them and something told her she needed to speak because Franklin was taking a bit of time to do so.

They could do nothing to spook them and Clementine took it upon herself to make sure that didn’t happen.

"We don’t know what you’re talking about but if you think it is best to kill us now then so be it. Aim and take our life but you lose more than you can gain. So you either accept our offer, let us go, or put a bullet through our head because we don’t have time to waste. The gunfire would have attracted any stray zombies out here so the faster the better," Clementine said and Franklin didn’t understand why she used such a tone.

This could go either well or bad, there was no in-between.

"What do you say? Should I put a bullet through their brains!?" The man with the gun asked but a voice that wasn’t part of this discussion chimed in.

"You will do no such thing," The man said, multiple came out with guns.

"W-We weren’t expecting you..." The man who was negotiating with Franklin stuttered.

Clementine and Franklin gulped because they didn’t know how things would go and something was intimidating about him.

"You say you can help us?" The man that just emerged asked.

"That is correct," Franklin responded, taking over the conversation.

The man didn’t say much, all he did was raise a hand and the men he brought got on one knee and aimed their guns right at them.

"I will give you thirty seconds to convince me if you can’t. Well, you die," The man said bluntly and Jason didn’t understand why but everything about this man read danger.

Clementine gulped because she knew he wasn’t bluffing, Franklin had to give the speech of his life or they would die where they stood.

Sam was struggling, he was fading in and out of consciousness but he was alive, that was the most important thing.

"How the fuck is he alive?" One man asked because the wounds Sam asked were a lot more serious than they thought, it was a miracle that he could even move.

"I have no idea but if he is the only one to survive that base, then maybe he can help us with the information we’re looking for..." Another man said, both standing over Sam.

"I have a feeling this man will lead us right to him," The first man said as they watched Sam carefully.
