Chapter 186: be careful.
She had changed into a light gray tracksuit and Martin boots, and her hair had been tied back in a way that made her look neat and ready to move. She glanced over at Bai Li and then at the little girl. "Mom, take good care of LiLi. Remember not to open the door for anyone."
"Okay, I remember. You two be careful," Yan Laojin hurriedly reminded her. Then she looked between the two of them and sighed a little inside. She knew exactly what it meant when supplies were running low. There was no point pretending they could just stay inside forever and wait for rescue. If they wanted to survive, they had to go out and look for food. That was all there was to it. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
"We’re leaving now, little LiLi. See you later," Bai Li said as she waved at the little girl.
"See you later, Auntie," the little girl replied in her sweet voice.
Yan Cijin took the dog leg knife and followed Bai Li out the door. Once they were outside, Bai Li’s backpack appeared out of thin air in her hand. She had stored it in her spatial storage before leaving so she would not need to carry it awkwardly in front of everyone inside. Yan Cijin glanced at that and did not ask questions. She was already used to Bai Li having all sorts of strange and useful things. In the apocalypse, people quickly learned that surviving meant accepting a lot of things they would have found impossible before.
Bai Li took the dog leg knife from Yan Cijin and handed her the backpack. "Put the backpack on first."
"Okay." Yan Cijin took it and put it on, then accepted the knife back from Bai Li and followed her closely.
With a thought, Bai Li conjured a Tang sword in her right hand. The steel appeared in a clean motion, and the blade caught the light for a second as it came into view. Bai Li had already killed over a hundred zombies with this sword, so now she could spend attribute points on it. There were three types of attributes available to her: Strength, Speed, and Critical Hit. Bai Li chose to add one point to Strength without hesitation.
She had been focused on healing during the last few days, so the sword had not actually gotten stronger since then. Now that she could finally move around more freely, this was a good chance to test whether the increase felt different in real combat.
A slight smile appeared on Bai Li’s lips as she headed toward the fire escape stairs. The air in the stairwell was truly bad. In the hot summer heat, the smell of corpses had already started to rot into something thick and sour, the kind of smell that stuck in the throat and made people feel nauseated if they stayed too long. Bai Li walked to the windows and opened them all on the way down, letting as much air through as possible. If she did not air this place out, the smell alone would make them dizzy, and the risk of getting infected from the filth would also be higher. In this kind of place, even the environment could kill you if you ignored it for too long.
Yan Cijin followed beside her, carrying a kukri. She stayed alert the whole time, eyes moving constantly over the stairwell. Bai Li could feel her attention, and for some reason that made her feel a little steadier. Having someone beside you who did not panic, who did not slow you down, who kept pace without needing to be told twice, made everything feel a lot less lonely. Bai Li had gotten used to doing things on her own, but walking down these stairs with another person by her side made her notice just how quiet her own life had become recently.
When they reached the 8th floor, they encountered two zombies. One was a female zombie, with half her face bitten off and one leg limping badly enough that she had to drag it behind her. The other was a tall male zombie who looked young enough that, before turning, he might have still been in his twenties. But now his facial features were already warped into something no longer human. The moment the two zombies saw Bai Li and Yan Cijin, they let out a piercing howl and charged at them.
Bai Li did not wait. She did not dodge backward either. Instead, she went straight toward them.
The male zombie lunged first, and Bai Li kicked him in the chest. The kick was faster than before, cleaner, and much harder. The zombie was knocked backward and tumbled onto the platform between the 7th and 8th floors. At the same time, Bai Li gripped her sword with both hands and brought the blade down in a straight slash toward the female zombie’s neck. The blade cut through with a sharp, clean motion. Bai Li had expected another strike would be necessary, but before she could even prepare for it, the female zombie’s head rolled to the ground.
Bai Li’s smile widened.
With her body strengthened and her Tang sword slightly enhanced, her strength had clearly increased a lot. She could now kill a zombie with a single two handed swing. The result was better than she had expected. That meant her recent attribute point had worked. But what about one hand? Could she do it with only one hand? Bai Li’s eyes narrowed just a little as she looked down at the male zombie still struggling to get up.
She quickly went downstairs and took advantage of his moment of weakness. Before he could fully recover, Bai Li stepped forward and kicked him in the face. The zombie was sent sprawling backward to the floor, sliding a short distance in the process. Bai Li then walked over, put one foot on his chest, and slashed downward with her right hand alone.
