Lucas shot upright in bed.
A thin layer of sweat covered his body as he frantically looked around the unfamiliar room.
"Where am I?" he muttered.
His gaze drifted to the side and landed on Carol, who was sleeping peacefully nearby.
Then the memories came flooding back.
The power plant.
The spiders.
The Queen.
His skill.
"You’re awake?" Carol murmured as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes.
She sat up and stretched.
Lucas immediately looked away.
She was wearing a silk nightgown that left very little to the imagination. The loose fabric clung to her figure, and every movement threatened to draw his attention back.
"H-Hey," he said, forcing himself to focus elsewhere. "Where am I?"
"My house," Carol replied casually.
She rose from the bed and walked over to a nearby desk.
"I didn’t know where else to take you."
She picked up a jug and poured a glass of water before handing it to him.
Lucas grabbed it and drained it in seconds.
"More."
Without a word, she filled another cup.
"You got lucky," Carol said as he gulped it down. "I’ve seen people die from that before."
Lucas paused.
"When your Innate Karma runs dry, it’s like draining every drop of water from your body. Most people don’t recover."
She watched him empty the second cup almost as quickly as the first.
"You need to be more careful." ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
Lucas lowered the glass.
"Thanks."
Carol leaned against the desk and folded her arms.
"Now that I’ve answered your questions, you can answer mine."
His stomach tightened.
"W-What do you mean?"
"What really happened back there?"
Lucas nearly choked on the remaining water.
"N-Nothing really." He forced out an awkward laugh. "Things just got chaotic."
Carol stared at him.
The silence lasted long enough to make him uncomfortable.
"You made that monster attack the Queen."
It wasn’t a question.
Carol’s expression remained calm, but her eyes never left his face.
"You made it turn against her," she continued. "I saw it happen."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Lucas could feel his heartbeat pounding in his ears.
"Care to explain?"
The silence stretched out for more than a few seconds.
"There’s nothing to explain," he said finally.
"So I’m guessing that really is your ability," she nodded with understanding.
"Just tell me one thing, does your ability only work on monsters or does it affect humans too?" Her gaze, calm but sharp.
Lucas could understand why that would be the first question on her mind but answering didn’t feel like the right thing to do.
"No, it doesn’t. I can’t even use it properly,"
"Okay, but let me still warn you. If I was to ever find out you use that ability on me, I’ll kill you without any thought,"
She stared at him, unblinking with an expression that made Lucas know she wasn’t messing around.
"Do you understand?"
"Yes," he replied.
"There should be some food left in the kitchen if you’re hungry, I’ll tell Elena to heat it up for you,"
She headed for the door and left the room, leaving him on his own.
He let out a defeated exhale.
He always knew that his ability was the kind given to a villain that couldn’t be trusted. The power to influence a person’s mind and make them believe whatever he wanted could easily be considered as a very dangerous form of mind control.
For that reason he couldn’t blame Carol for being worried for her safety. Anyone would be.
’For now I should avoid using my ability on anyone around her, maybe that way I can convince her it only affects the monsters’
This was one of the reasons he was worried about his ability being revealed, because it would automatically make it difficult for other people to trust him.
"What if Carol goes and tells them everything?"
"Then I’ll be left on my own,"
That sounded dangerous but he’ll at least be alive, but there was also a chance that the heroes might see him as a threat and try to take him out.
’In that case I need to get stronger so I can protect myself’
"System, what’s my available KP?"
[You currently have 49 Karma Points]
[Target 96/1000]
His eyes fell on the target.
’That’s not bad, I should be able to advance to the next rank very soon... I wonder what kind of skills I’ll get’
The charm skill was already fairly overpowered on its own so it was hard to imagine even more skills of that caliber.

Lucas stared at the floating screen.
"...What?"
He blinked twice and read it again.
The message remained unchanged.
A laugh escaped his lips.
"This is one freaky system."
There was no way he was taking something like that seriously.
He stretched out a finger and tapped Reject.
The screen flickered.
Lucas frowned.
The Reject button vanished.
(ACCEPT)
Only that single word remained.
His smile slowly disappeared.
"What the hell? I clicked reject."
He tapped the floating window again.
Nothing happened.
"System?"
No response.
The screen remained exactly as it was.
A faint sense of unease settled in his chest.
The system had never ignored his commands before.
"Whatever."
He waved the message away.
"It’ll probably disappear on its own."
Even as he said it, he wasn’t entirely convinced.
Pushing the thought aside, he got out of bed and left the room.
When he entered the luxurious living room, he was greeted by a giant flat-screen television and furniture expensive enough to make him nervous about sitting on it.
Carol sat comfortably in an armchair with a glass of red wine in hand.
Meanwhile, Elena dragged herself through the kitchen like a zombie.
A wide yawn escaped her lips, before she spotted him.
