Chapter 243: Chapter 200: A Matter of One Word
’My club can’t have someone this badass in it.’
’I’m throwing billions around with your dad, and you think you can just ignore me?’
It was an inner demon of his.
Lin Chu watched her back as it gradually receded into the distance, but didn’t call out to her. He lit a cigarette and took two puffs.
’This won’t work.’
’This girl’s not going to be easy.’
’It’s not because of her personality, though. That kind of thing is never a problem for me.’
’A woman I can’t pick up? Is there such a thing?’
’The key is, what if I get with her and Old Zhou decides not to pay me back?’
’Famous Group is still a huge money pit. Getting myself tied up in it would make me a real idiot.’
Gazing at the golf course under the night sky, Lin Chu shook his head with a smile and continued his walk while he waited.
"Cousin, the traffic is a bit heavy. Wow, traffic in the big city is seriously bad. The GPS says I won’t be there until 9:40."
After receiving Wang Hao’s message, Lin Chu casually replied, "Okay, no rush. Take your time."
He walked another lap.
He crossed paths with Zhou Luan again. This time, her pace was much slower; her stamina was likely at its limit. Her face was flushed red and beaded with sweat, giving off a sense of unstoppable youth.
As she drew near, she naturally slowed her pace and took off her headphones.
"President Lin..."
Her voice was crisp and clear. Lin Chu, however, just waved a hand, looking like he had no intention of engaging, and kept walking forward.
Zhou Luan paused. ’Huh? What’s going on? He doesn’t want to talk to me? It’s not like he’s on the phone or busy with something.’
She had no idea this was Lin Chu’s petty revenge for her ignoring him during her first lap.
After a moment’s hesitation, she quickened her pace to catch up.
"Lin Chu!"
she called out, her voice a little louder.
Lin Chu glanced back at her. "Uh-huh? Need something?"
"No."
"What are you doing here?"
She asked casually. To be honest, her impression of Lin Chu had improved significantly since their last dinner. This was due to a combination of his wealth, her family’s situation, the business he was in, and even her own current job.
In Zhou Luan’s eyes, Lin Chu was now "a man who really had something going for him."
"Nothing, just taking a stroll,"
Lin Chu said casually.
He paused, then suddenly remembered the classmate she’d mentioned. "Hey, didn’t you say you wanted to play golf with your friend? You should do it in the next few days. The Seniors’ Tournament starts next week, so all the courts will be booked up for almost two months."
Zhou Luan pursed her lips. Without much thought, she considered it for a moment and nodded.
"We’ll take Court 1, then. But you don’t need to give us an annual pass."
Lin Chu nodded. "Fine. Go on, then."
Zhou Luan could tell he didn’t want to chat any longer, but she didn’t say anything more. She just waved again and turned to leave.
’I’m all sticky with sweat. This feels gross. I need to get back and shower.’
...
At 9:30, Lin Chu’s wait was finally over. Wang Hao had arrived.
He wore a white T-shirt, shorts, and sneakers. He was on the shorter side, perhaps not even 5’7", with ordinary features. His expression was a mixture of youthfulness and inexperience, tinged with a bit of apprehension.
"Cousin, the stuff’s in the back seat. I put ice in the styrofoam cooler, but I was worried it would get too warm, so I cranked the AC all the way up. Quick, take a look."
Seeing Lin Chu in the parking lot, he quickly pulled open the car door to check.
The moment the door opened, Lin Chu felt a blast of cold air wash over him.
"Uncle bought you this car?"
Lin Chu asked casually, looking at the electric BYD.
It was a new car. The tires weren’t even fully coated in dirt, and a red ribbon was still tied to it.
"Yeah, on an installment plan. I’m paying off the loan myself. He told me to go work in a factory and see if I can find a girlfriend while I’m at it."
Wang Hao scratched his head and smiled, a little embarrassed.
"So, have you found a job yet?"
Lin Chu followed up.
"I submitted my resume online to an electronics factory. They said if I pass the physical, I’m in. The base salary is 4,100, room and board included, plus overtime bonuses."
He said, seeming a little proud of himself.
’I found a job all by myself! Come on, Cousin, praise me!’
Lin Chu saw right through this little ploy for praise—it was typical student thinking. He couldn’t help but smile.
It made him feel a bit sentimental.
Everyone’s like this when they’re just starting out. In a couple of years, they’re either crushed by the world or they become jaded old hands. Of course, a few manage to take off, but they’re the exception to the rule.
’And his little cousin, no matter how you looked at him, didn’t seem like the type who would ever take off.’
"I’m hiring over here, too. Seven thousand a month, room and board included. Want the job? It’s in sales, and there’s a commission."
The thought occurred to Lin Chu. ’For a kid like this, it’s better not to send him out into the world to be forged by hardship. The odds are he wouldn’t be forged, just broken. Why bother with all that?’
"Huh? For real?"
Wang Hao’s eyes lit up, and he stared in disbelief.
"Would I lie about that?"
"I’m the boss!"
Lin Chu had to resist the urge to reach out and pat his head, but he held back.
’He’s not a little girl, after all.’
"Huh? The boss?!"
Wang Hao was dumbfounded. This was completely unexpected. His cousin was on another level, and the offer was so good it felt unreal. ’Do I even deserve this?’
After hesitating for a moment, he looked at Lin Chu’s expression and stammered, "Then... then I’ll call my dad."
Lin Chu waved his hand. "Go ahead."
He checked the chicken and lamb; they were both fine. The kid was clearly a people-pleaser, afraid of making the slightest mistake. He had the AC blasting, had placed the styrofoam cooler right in front of the rear vent, and its contents were still ice-cold.
This small detail actually impressed Lin Chu.
"Cousin, my dad says he wants to say a few words to you."
He came over, holding out the phone.
Lin Chu took the phone. His uncle’s voice came on the line, asking if it was too much trouble and if the offer was legit.
Lin Chu fielded the questions easily, laughing. "It’s no problem, Uncle. And hey, keep an eye on my dad for me, will you? Don’t let him drink every day. Just leave Wang Hao to me. Don’t you worry. I’ll take care of it!"
