Chapter 369: Alistair’s Downfall (2)

As the hours passed, the election only grew more unstable. What was an expected outcome turned into an unexpected one as the people started voting for other people instead of Gray.

Names that barely stood a chance now had a chance. With what happened, everything just became more unpredictable and fun.

When evening came, the voting stations had finally closed. However, the fun didn’t stop there. It was only when the counting began that everything became more exciting.

It was most especially fun for Gray and Mara, who caused everything.

The two were currently in Gray’s apartment. Lily and Eli were completely asleep now, and it was only they awake in the middle of the night.

They were in the living room, watching television for live updates while they were doing their own things.

Gray was sitting comfortably on the couch. He was leaning back with his one arm resting at his neck. He was using his phone in one hand. He was just lazily scrolling on the internet.

On the other hand, Mara was sitting on the other end of the couch. She was wrapped up in a comfortable blanket.

"Hah, I couldn’t believe that Alistair is that low," she muttered, followed by a chuckle. She was munching on some popcorn as if the live votes were an interesting movie.

Gray let out a low chuckle, too. His eyes were still on his phone as he scrolled.

"Yeah," he said. He was also amused by it. "I didn’t expect it to drop that fast either."

Gray tilted his head slightly, finally glancing up at the television. The numbers refreshed again, and Alistair’s gap only widened.

"That’s rough." Another laugh escaped from him.

"What rough? That’s an understatement." Mara snorted lightly at his reaction. She smiled as she tossed another piece of popcorn into her mouth.

"I actually tried calling him earlier," he added casually.

"Oh?" Mara’s eyes widened at that. She raised her brows as she glanced at him.

"Yeah. I called him earlier, but he didn’t answer..." Gray let out a small sigh at that. "Not even once."

He glanced back at the screen, watching as another update came in.

"He’s probably too busy trying to fix everything."

Mara chuckled at that. "I guess we can only say good luck to him."

Among the two of them, she was the one who was the most satisfied with what happened. For months, she had only watched and waited from the sidelines.

So now that everything they had planned was finally happening, she felt an odd sense of satisfaction. It was as if a big bug in her eyes had finally been taken care of.

"Oh well," Gray smiled meaningfully at Mara because the two of them knew well that this one was impossible to take care of.

"But we should be thankful to the two men, Gray." Mara glanced at him.

"Yeah. They handled it cleanly. It was better than I expected." Gray’s lips curved into a mischievous smile.

They really did it better because until now, the post was up on the internet. He didn’t know they did it because he knew for sure that it should have been deleted by now.

"I wonder what will happen tomorrow," Mara asked. A deep curiosity was evident in her voice.

Gray just shook his head and let out a deep breath.

"Tomorrow is the day he will be jailed."

"Huh?" Mara paused mid-bite at that. "The filing of the case is done?"

"Yeah," he said. "The lawyer already informed me."

Gray reached for his phone again, "And they’ve also secured a warrant."

"That fast?" Mara’s brows lifted slightly at that.

"Yes." Gray’s lips curved faintly. "I was informed that they’re going to his place tomorrow morning," he added. "Straight to his house."

Mara blinked once, then let out a short and breathy laugh. She was caught off guard by how smoothly things were done.

"Damn..."

Inside the counting centers, everything has been strict and controlled so far. Ballot boxes were still being opened one by one, with the paper inside it stacked carefully.

It wasn’t only the staff who were in the counting centers but also observers. They consist of civilians who volunteered, as well as reporters and staff from different news stations. Their role was to watch everything to make sure nothing would be missed.

They witnessed how everyone was close at first. There were 6 candidates for the mayor position in their city. Because of how messy it had become, they didn’t really know who was leading.

One candidate would lead, then lose it the next minute. It kept changing again and again with no guaranteed outcome.

But as more ballots were counted over the hours, one thing had become clear. The people don’t want Alistair anymore. There were a few districts where his name didn’t even come up, even once.

"Hays, I pity Mayor Alistair. He used to be a good mayor."

The comment came from one of the older civilian watchers; his voice was low but not quiet enough to go unnoticed. He stood with his arms crossed, eyes fixed on the tally board in front of him.

Beside him, another man let out a small hum, shaking his head slowly. "He used to," he repeated. "That’s the problem."

A younger woman, one of the volunteer observers, sighed.. "I still can’t believe it dropped this much," she admitted. "This morning, people were so sure about him." She was once a firm supporter of Alistair, but she changed her vote when she learned of what happened.

Near the back, two reporters were also quietly discussing among themselves.

"This is going to be all over tomorrow," one of them said.

"I could already see that," the other replied. "From 60% in the poll?" He gestured toward the results. "And now to having barely 10k votes is quite a comedy."

"You think he can recover from this?" The other reporter didn’t even hesitate to ask that question.

"No." The other man answered simply and certainly. He just shrugged his shoulders before returning his gaze to the automatic counter in the room. "He’s done."
