Chapter 230: Stay out of this
"She sounds suspicious," Amanda declared after Kyle finished telling her everything that had happened with Adam’s girlfriend. freewёbnoνel.com
He has just taken a bath and has changed into clothes Amanda brought for him.
Standing before the mirror he said,
"Yeah, she did seem a little strange, but I’ve already given my word." Kyle rubbed the back of his head and added, "Sorry about this evening. Looks like we won’t be able to spend it together."
Amanda hummed. "Who said that? Of course I’m coming with you."
Kyle raised a brow. "But didn’t you say you had to visit the workshop?"
Amanda scoffed. "I was planning to. Not anymore after hearing about a girl who seems a little too eager to be trained."
A wry smile appeared on Kyle’s face. "Go easy on her. I don’t want Adam coming to me in tears because we somehow ended up causing his breakup."
Amanda offered no reassurance. Instead, she simply rose to her feet.
As she reached the door, she said, "I’ll go take care of the discharge procedure."
Kyle nodded. "Then I’ll visit Veronica. See you at the front desk."
Amanda nodded in return, and the two walked together to the elevator before parting ways. Kyle headed to the floor directly below the one where he had been admitted.
The guards standing outside the room turned toward him as he approached.
"Can I see her?" Kyle asked.
The guard on the left nodded. "She’s been expecting you."
Kyle nodded and wordlessly stepped inside.
The room was noticeably larger than the one assigned to him.
A comfortable sitting area occupied one side of the room, while a large television hung across from the spacious bed where Veronica rested comfortably.
"They really know how to differentiate based on rank," Kyle remarked as he approached the woman, who was already smiling knowingly at him.
"One of the perks of being a Commander and one of the downsides of being an intern," she joked, her voice still slightly rough.
Kyle poured her a glass of water and asked, "What did the latest reports say? Do they know how long your recovery will take?"
Veronica accepted the glass, though Kyle still helped her drink.
It was a simple gesture, something anyone would have done given her condition. Even so, that small act of care was enough to make her heart beat a little faster.
After taking a few sips, she handed the glass back and said, "The toxin has been completely removed from my body. Now it’s just a matter of giving my Genesis enough time to repair the remaining damage."
Genesis naturally focused on healing the body when left inactive.
However, when it was pushed too hard through conscious use, it entered a dormant state. During that period, its priority shifted from healing to preserving life, protecting vital functions and keeping the user alive until recovery became possible.
It was a fascinating phenomenon.
"Well, after hearing a few things from Blake, I realized just how devastating it can be to be targeted with one’s Field. Yet you tanked it as if you existed outside the natural order."
Though his words sounded like praise, there was concern behind them.
Veronica could tell he wasn’t pleased with the way she had handled the situation. There was even a trace of guilt in his voice.
It was strange.
For some reason, she could read him far more clearly than before.
Letting out a quiet sigh, she leaned back against the reclining bed.
"Kyle, you probably think I stood there and took the hit because I wanted to look cool or prove something. But the truth is, it’s one of the few methods I’ve learned to corner an opponent."
Kyle’s eyes widened slightly as he listened.
"When I was living at my ancestral home, I was picked on more than once because of my hair color. Whenever it happened, I would step forward and focus on the biggest bully. I’d lock eyes with him and challenge him without saying a word. Then, when he threw the first punch, I’d endure it with everything I had."
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
"I never showed pain. Never showed fear. And the moment they realized their strongest hit couldn’t make me flinch, I had already won half the battle."
Kyle asked, "So you deliberately kept up a brave front to make him panic?"
Veronica nodded. "The truth is, breaking a Spark forged through absolute resolve is incredibly difficult. I needed to shake his confidence, and I did that by enduring the effects of his Field."
Kyle’s lips parted slightly.
So she hadn’t relied on strength alone during the battle. Every move had been calculated. She had been observing, analyzing, and adapting the entire time.
"Somehow... I feel like a fool now." He let out a sigh, a defeated smile appearing on his face. "And that only makes me respect you even more. You truly deserve this special treatment, Commander."
A faint warmth spread across Veronica’s cheeks as she heard the sincerity in his voice.
"Don’t keep being so impressed by me," she said lightly. "I don’t want Amanda coming to complain to me later."
Kyle chuckled and shook his head.
"If you can make jokes like that, then I should assume you’re recovering well."
Veronica nodded. "Yeah. In a day or two, I’ll be back on duty. But you, Kyle, need to stay home and rest until at least Sunday."
Kyle blinked in surprise. "Then won’t I have only three days left as an intern? I was told I’d receive my enrollment letter by Wednesday."
Veronica nodded. "And I don’t see a problem with that. You’ve already learned more than enough."
Kyle hummed thoughtfully. "If you say so..."
Then something crossed his mind.
"Veronica, there’s something I wanted to tell you. It’s about what I saw last night at the hospital."
Veronica’s brows furrowed as she sensed the seriousness in his tone.
"Go on," she said.
Kyle recounted the entire experience, from the strange stench he had noticed to the disturbing sight hidden behind those concrete walls.
When he finished, he shook his head.
"I really don’t think those people are up to anything good," Kyle said. "I believe..."
"Kyle."
Veronica cut him off abruptly.
Her expression had turned stern, and her gaze locked onto his.
"I’m telling you this for your own safety," she said. "Stay out of this. Please."
Kyle was taken aback, "Wha...but-"
"Shh." She stopped him again before glancing to the left, "They can hear us."
Kyle took a strong gulp and turned toward the tv across from them.
In a quiet voice Veronica told him, "Whatever you saw, keep it to yourself. I know what it is but trust me, even someone at my position could do anything about it." freewёbnoνel.com
Kyle narrowed his eyes. She knew and yet couldn’t do anything about it?
Exactly what people were involved with all this?
But well, regardless of his curiosity, Kyle promised her, "I won’t talk about it or dwell in this matter anymore."
Veronica faintly smiled and nodded, "Thank you for understanding."
