Chapter 227: No more trouble

Bzz

Hearing her phone vibrate, Amanda first stepped out of the crowded shop.

It was surprising that even at this early hour, the shop was so packed. And it wasn’t even the weekend.

’Well, no wonder Kyle likes noodles from this shop.’

Somehow weaving through the crowd, she stepped out and took out her phone.

She assumed it was Kyle. After all, she had already spent far longer than expected buying noodles.

To her surprise, the caller was her cousin, Melissa.

A smile appeared on Amanda’s face as she accepted the call.

"Hey, Milli!"

The last time they had spoken was a few days after Melissa returned home with her family. Since then, they had only exchanged a few texts, making this Melissa’s first call since returning.

{Hey, where are you? It’s so noisy.}

Amanda hummed as she soon settled into the car.

"Inside the car. I’m on my way to see Kyle. Why do you ask?"

{I was bored, so I called you.}

Amanda chuckled.

"Is that so? How are things going? And how’s Uncle doing, by the way?"

Melissa had already told her through text messages that her father was still furious over her refusal to return and work at his company.

Her reason was simple; she doesn’t want to create tool of destruction anymore. It was another matter that she actually couldn’t even if she tried to. But the factor remained; her creations were misused.

{Still angry. But I got help from someone he can’t really argue with.}

"Grandpa?" Amanda guessed immediately.

{Yep. I told him everything, including the things Father used to make me create and the damage those inventions ended up causing. You should’ve seen Father’s face when Grandpa confronted him.}

Amanda could picture the scene perfectly.

Everyone in the family, including her own father, respected and feared the old man. Yet when it came to Amanda and Melissa, he was always gentle and indulgent.

Melissa had clearly taken full advantage of that fact.

"So, what now?"

{I’m staying at Grandpa’s place for the time being. I’m trying to sort things out and figure out what I want to do next.}

Amanda smiled softly.

"If you ever need any kind of support, don’t hesitate to call me, okay?"

{As long as you’re not with your boyfriend. Otherwise, you’ll probably ignore the call.}

Melissa’s dry remark drew a laugh from Amanda.

{Speaking of the big guy, where is he? You said you were on your way to see him.}

Amanda let out a small sigh, her amusement fading slightly.

"Yeah... he got injured during a raid yesterday. He’s in the hospital right now, but he should be discharged this evening."

{Wow. He’s really something else. Ever since his awakening, he keeps ending up in one dangerous situation after another.}

Amanda could only offer a wry smile.

Because that was undeniably true.

"Well, he never goes looking for trouble..."

{No one does, at least not if they’re in their right mind. Still, keep an eye on him. The two of you should spend some time together somewhere other than a hospital for once.}

Amanda nodded firmly.

"I’ve already been thinking about asking the Commander to give him a few days of leave."

A determined glint appeared in her eyes as she continued,

"I’m not letting him get dragged into another battle anytime soon."

{Good luck with that.}

Amanda paused.

"Hm?"

{From what you’ve told me, Kyle doesn’t exactly seem like the type who knows how to stay out of trouble.}

Amanda let out a helpless laugh.

Unfortunately, Melissa wasn’t wrong.

Ever since his awakening, danger seemed to find him no matter where he went.

Still, that only strengthened her resolve.

This time, she was going to make sure he got the rest he deserved, even if she had to personally stand guard over him the entire time.

....

If only Amanda knew where her boyfriend currently was, she would have slapped her forehead in resignation.

Standing before Kyle was a warrior who had once defeated humanity’s greatest threat and successfully infiltrated the Temple.

Yet the man’s posture remained completely relaxed, as though Kyle were holding a candy cane instead of a sword.

Even if it was only a wooden one.

"Why do you look so tense?" the man asked, folding his arms across his chest. "This isn’t even a battle. I’m simply measuring your worth."

Kyle narrowed his eyes but offered no response. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

The system had assigned him a quest.

He only needed to land a single hit.

And at this moment, that was the only thing occupying his mind.

[God of Mischief is intrigued by your determination.]

WarHorse: [Show him your will of flame, my brother!]

Tharos: [Be careful, Kyle.]

Giving the chat a brief glance, Kyle finally took a step forward.

The man didn’t move.

Kyle recalled the lessons from his swordsmanship classes.

The first strike should always target the shoulder. It forced the opponent to react, often exposing other openings while defending.

Keeping God’s Eye active, Kyle watched every detail.

Every twitch. Every subtle shift in posture. Every faint flex of muscle. freewēbnoveℓ.com

Yet that was exactly what kept him on edge.

The man was far too relaxed.

There wasn’t the slightest hint of tension in his body.

"Ha!"

Kyle lunged forward and delivered a diagonal slash, his feet firmly grounded.

CLANG!

The sword never reached its target.

With a simple swing of his hand, the man struck the flat of the wooden blade and redirected the force entirely.

Kyle’s body was thrown off balance, his stance collapsing instantly.

An opening.

A fatal one.

Kyle tried to recover, but the man’s fist was already inches from his ribs.

He braced for the impact.

It never came.

SHUANK!

The punch stopped just a breath away from his body.

Yet the pressure generated by the strike alone brushed against his clothes, sending a gust of wind across his side.

Kyle froze.

Slowly, he looked up.

The man was staring at him with an amused smile.

Kyle took a deep breath and retreated several steps.

’What was that...?’

The question echoed through his mind.

He had seen the attack.

God’s Eye had tracked every movement.

And yet, by the time his brain processed what was happening, the fist had already reached him.

"What happened, boy? Was a single deflection enough to crush your spirit?"

Kyle swallowed hard.

He wasn’t the type to lose his composure and rush at an opponent simply because of a taunt.

He understood the gap between their abilities.

And that understanding was precisely why he was now questioning whether he should continue.

Yes, the system had assigned him a quest.

But he was hardly in peak condition, and the man before him was on an entirely different level.

Would continuing really change anything?

’What should I do...?’

As he wrestled with the decision, another notification suddenly appeared before him.

[Viewer <WarHorse> has gifted a power-up.]

[Gift: Shadow Walk]

[Description: Erase the sound of one’s footsteps entirely regardless of the path they walk on.]

[Duration: Two Minutes]

[Side Note: You can do it, buddy!]
