Chapter 1388: Chapter 1362: The Consequence of Arrogance
Emperor Wu of Han saw that Ye Chen actually refused him, and his face inevitably turned somewhat unsightly.
Since his ascension to the throne, he has always been the ultimate authority, and no one dared to defy his orders.
But the Ye Chen in front of him was the first person to defy him, and anyone who dares to challenge his authority is certainly due for decapitation.
Everyone was waiting for Emperor Wu of Han to give the order to behead Ye Chen, feeling somewhat regretful for Ye Chen, after all, he was so young to lose his life.
All because he refused the opportunity that so many long for, to dine with Emperor Wu of Han.
"Oh, what a pity."
"I think he deserves it, daring to defy the order."
"How many people want this opportunity, yet this envoy doesn’t know what’s good for him."
Emperor Wu of Han wore a bitter expression, his anger making his teeth itch, Ye Chen’s actions were undoubtedly challenging his authority.
However, for someone of Ye Chen’s caliber, Emperor Wu of Han had no time to make connections, how could he possibly go as far as to execute Ye Chen?
He forcefully suppressed his inner fury, his teeth grinding noisily.
The eunuch and ministers within the hall saw Emperor Wu of Han’s expression, their legs shivered with fear. They were even more puzzled as to why Emperor Wu of Han did not give the order to kill Ye Chen.
Everyone watched as Ye Chen swaggered towards the hall, their hearts filled with questions.
Just as Emperor Wu of Han was about to take his meal, suddenly a soldier rushed in anxiously.
Seeing the soldier, Emperor Wu of Han’s face became even more unsightly.
"What happened that you’re so flustered?" Emperor Wu of Han asked coldly.
He could see that this soldier was previously out fighting alongside Wei Qing. Upon seeing this person’s anxious face, Emperor Wu of Han was also a bit tense.
Previously, there had been reports that Wei Qing and his men had won a battle, but due to his lack of appetite, he couldn’t feel the joy.
Though someone reported the victory, Wei Qing and others hadn’t returned to the City. Seeing this person, Emperor Wu of Han knew there was bound to be bad news.
"To report to His Majesty, we have already won this battle, but General Wei is seriously injured and has fainted." The soldier said with a grim expression.
"Then why haven’t you summoned the Imperial Physician quickly to treat the Grand General?" Emperor Wu of Han hurriedly said.
"The Imperial Physicians are already at the General’s Mansion, but all of them are helpless. The Grand General’s condition might..." Seeing Emperor Wu of Han’s face turn grim, the soldier swallowed the words back.
"What did you say? What do you mean by the Grand General’s condition?" Emperor Wu of Han glared at the soldier before him and asked.
"This time, the Grand General’s condition might be dire." The soldier said sobbingly.
"Utter nonsense! How dare you curse the Grand General, someone take this soldier and execute him." Emperor Wu of Han roared in anger.
In truth, he knew that what the soldier said was true. After years of fighting, Wei Qing’s body was already covered in scars, not only external but many internal injuries. But for all the years Wei Qing led soldiers for him, how could he accept this fact?
Emperor Wu of Han was merely deceiving himself, he wouldn’t allow others to say Wei Qing was dying.
The ministers dared not speak, the great hall returned to silence.
The soldier didn’t plead for mercy, feeling that after all these years Wei Qing treated him like a brother. If Wei Qing was gone, accompanying him was also a good choice.
Two guards then took the soldier who came to report towards the interior of the great hall.
Everyone thought this soldier was unjustly treated, but no one dared to plead for him. They knew Emperor Wu of Han was in a fit of rage, whoever pleaded would accompany the soldier in death.
"Wait, even if you kill him, will the Grand General recover?" Suddenly, a voice rang out.
This voice broke the silence in the hall, becoming exceptionally piercing.
Everyone looked towards the entrance, only then realizing the voice’s owner was Ye Chen.
They all thought Ye Chen was courting death. Emperor Wu of Han had just spared him once, unexpectedly, this guy still hit the gunpoint, wasn’t he courting death?
Emperor Wu of Han glared at Ye Chen, thinking in his heart, this guy repeatedly challenges his patience. Even if he’s a high-ranking individual, he would have to kill him, otherwise, where would his authority stand?
"Ye Chen, how dare you contradict the Emperor!" The eunuch pointed at the young man standing at the entrance and said.
Then he continued, "Someone take this man to be executed."
Quickly, two guards approached Ye Chen, ready to seize him.
The ministers all shook their heads helplessly, thinking this young man really had no sense of propriety, repeatedly angering the Emperor. If he wasn’t executed, it wouldn’t make sense at all.
Ye Chen smiled nonchalantly and said, "It doesn’t matter if you kill me, but your Grand General will definitely have no salvation."
Upon hearing Ye Chen’s words, everyone thought he was merely buying time out of fear of death.
They knew the Imperial Physicians were highly skilled, if they had no solution, how could this young man possibly have one?
The ministers all felt Ye Chen’s ploy wouldn’t work; it would only make Emperor Wu of Han even more furious.
Emperor Wu of Han was also taken aback, becoming somewhat hesitant.
At this moment, the eunuch by his side spoke: "Your Majesty, I think it might be worth letting him try. After all, the treasure he just presented gave you an appetite; maybe he really does have a way?"
This eunuch, being with Emperor Wu of Han for many years, knew well how to observe and understand His Majesty’s intentions.
Emperor Wu of Han had just said to kill Ye Chen. If he now said not to kill him, it would be as if his words were meaningless.
He felt Ye Chen might indeed be a prodigious person, who just might accomplish it.
Moreover, if Ye Chen was just buying time, he could still execute him. But if Ye Chen truly could cure Wei Qing and he killed Ye Chen due to a momentary misjudgment, he would have lost a yet another general.
"Very well, since that’s the case, you may try. If you fail, I’ll sentence you to a dire punishment." Emperor Wu of Han said coldly.
The ministers didn’t expect Emperor Wu of Han would really let Ye Chen off, allowing him to try healing Wei Qing. This seemed like a joke.
How could Ye Chen, being so young, understand medicine? He might just be trying to escape midway to avoid execution.
But they all knew Ye Chen couldn’t possibly escape; he would certainly be followed by many guards to prevent just that.
The ministers could already envision Ye Chen facing severe punishment, feeling regretful for this young man, yet also thinking he deserved it for being so arrogant.
Such is the consequence of arrogance.
