Chapter 237: Aurelian Learns About The Family’s Decision
It made the Crownward March feel even farther away than it actually was.
Astra stepped beside him. "The family is moving quickly."
"Yes."
"Does that concern you?"
He thought about it honestly. "A little. Because once Arcturus starts committing resources, the momentum builds fast, and it doesn’t slow down easily."
Astra looked out over the same sky. "They trust your judgment."
"They do. And they believe the region is worth it." He let out a slow breath because that part mattered more than most things.
His father had looked at the same potential he had seen, the route, the territory, the space beyond Mournveil, and reached the same conclusion without needing to be convinced.
"It will strengthen the March," Astra said.
"It will. And increase pressure too."
She nodded once, and then they stood there quietly for another minute, watching the ships move and the city glow below them.
The calm felt real, temporary but real, and Aurelian let himself stay in it a little longer than he probably needed to.
Then footsteps came from behind them. A family staff officer approached, stopped at a respectful distance, and bowed. "Lord Aurelian. Lord Cassian is ready for you."
Aurelian straightened, and Astra stepped back into place beside him. He gave the officer a nod, then paused for a moment before heading inside.
"I will accompany you."
"Still working."
"I prefer useful work."
"Dangerous thing to admit near Astercourt."
Astra’s expression almost changed, almost.
They left the terrace together and headed through the estate’s transit corridor toward the main port district.
The Arcturus family capital starport was enormous even by Alliance standards, stretching across several linked sectors throughout the upper city and its orbital access towers, with civilian traffic carefully mixed alongside military logistics and family-controlled fleet lanes.
The scale of it felt different from Larkspur Haven, more polished and older, built by generations of expansion and refined over decades.
Massive carrier berths lined one side of the district, trade lanes ran through another, and high towers carried transit platforms between commercial plazas and docking bridges while screens floated overhead showing departures, market notices, and fleet schedules.
Aurelian and Astra moved through one of the quieter upper walkways while staff and travelers passed around them.
Most people recognized the Arcturus family crest on his coat and either saluted or politely stepped aside. He acknowledged them and kept walking.
After several minutes, his terminal chimed. He answered, and his younger cousin appeared on the screen. Lucian Arcturus looked amused the moment the call connected.
"So it really is you."
Aurelian smiled. "Good to see you too."
"I heard rumors all week. Tier III, hidden frontier, Tier V flagship, mysterious return."
"People exaggerate."
"Father nearly canceled two meetings."
"That sounds more believable."
Lucian laughed. "Where are you?"
"Upper port."
"Perfect. I’m nearby."
Aurelian glanced at Astra. "We may have company."
A few minutes later, Lucian came through a transit gate, close to Aurelian’s age, dressed casually by family standards and carrying himself with the relaxed confidence of someone raised inside power but never buried under ceremony.
He saw Astra and immediately paused, then gave a respectful nod. "So the reports weren’t exaggerated."
Astra returned the nod calmly.
Lucian looked back at Aurelian. "You really did come back with a monster."
Aurelian sighed. "She can hear you."
"I noticed."
Astra said nothing, which somehow made Lucian straighten a little more.
They walked together through the district while Lucian filled the silence naturally, pointing out changes in the starport and mentioning family updates Aurelian had missed.
Some sectors had expanded, a few older trade stations had been rebuilt, and Alliance inspection traffic had increased. Aurelian listened while Astra stayed quietly beside him.
Eventually, Lucian glanced around. "Where’s everyone else?"
"Enjoying themselves."
"You gave them spending access?"
"Yes."
Lucian looked genuinely impressed. "Bold." frёewebηovel.cѳm
"Why?"
"Because I know what military-grade shipgirls with free time and open payment permissions can do."
Aurelian thought about Rhoswen for a moment. "...fair."
That made Lucian laugh. They stopped at an upper observation deck overlooking one of the launch lanes, where a pair of destroyers lifted toward orbit while civilian traffic curved beneath them. For a little while, nobody said much, and then Lucian looked at him.
"You staying long?"
"Not too long."
"Going back soon."
"Yes."
Lucian nodded as he had already expected that answer. Aurelian kept his eyes on the ships moving below them. "I can’t stay away too long. Things are moving."
Lucian studied him for a moment, then smiled faintly. "You look different."
"How."
"Sharper, not like before, not sure which one I like more."
Hearing this made Aurelian think more about the situation, because there was truth in it. Months ago, Aurelian had left Alliance space with plans and ambition.
Now he had something real, a foothold, a growing territory, a fleet stronger than before, and people depending on him to keep it all moving in the right direction.
Astra stood beside him, silent and steady, and far beyond this world, the Crownward March was waiting.
His terminal chimed again, a family priority channel. Cassian.
Aurelian answered, and his father’s voice came through. "We’re nearly done."
"Need me there?"
"In half an hour."
"Understood."
The line closed, and Lucian looked amused. "Holiday’s over."
"For the moment." Aurelian turned toward Astra. "Looks like I’m needed."
She nodded. "Of course."
Lucian stretched and rolled his shoulders. "I’ll leave you to the serious people."
They parted ways there, and Aurelian and Astra headed back through the upper transit lanes toward the estate.
The city glowed beneath them, and the ship traffic overhead never truly slowed. As they crossed one of the connecting walkways, Astra spoke quietly.
"The fleet appreciated the break."
"I know."
"It was a good decision."
He glanced at her. "You sound like Astercourt."
"I dislike paperwork more than she does."
That caught him off guard enough to actually laugh, and Astra looked faintly satisfied as they kept walking.
By the time the estate came back into view, lights were still burning inside the secured command wing where the family leadership had been gathered for hours.
Aurelian could feel the shift even from out here, the movement of staff, messages crossing private channels, plans already taking shape behind closed doors. His peaceful break had not vanished entirely, but it was changing around the edges, and he could feel it.
The Arcturus family had made their choice, and soon enough, he would return to the frontier with more than just his fleet.
Engineers, administrators, settlement teams, resources, and a stronger foundation to build on.
The Crownward March had started as a dangerous foothold beyond known routes, and soon it would become something much harder to ignore.
Aurelian looked once toward the distant starport where his fleet was spending a rare quiet day, then toward the command wing ahead of him.
Astra matched his pace beside him, and neither of them needed to say anything. They simply walked forward together as the doors opened and the next stage of everything waiting beyond Mournveil drew one step closer.
