The ancestor’s phantom body flickered once, then went transparent like glass. The attack had burned through nearly every last drop of his soul. He looked down at the crater below with an unreadable expression.
"I will be expecting you."
His form scattered like dust in the wind, and then, he was gone.
Ten minutes passed. The dust settled slowly, but the heat didn’t fade. The ground still glowed red in places, and the air shimmered above the molten rock like a mirage.
Elyssa pulled herself up from the ground. Her heart that Andrew’s blade had run straight through was mostly healed now.
That was the disgusting beauty of a high-tier Dragonkin bloodline. You could carve out their heart, and they’d grow a new one before the body went cold.
She walked toward the edge of the crater. Seven hundred meters wide. The attack had scooped out a perfect bowl in the earth, and the bottom was still bubbling with molten rock.
She peered down into it, expecting to find something — a weapon, remains, ash, anything.

She searched the entire crater floor. Then the rubble around the rim. She unfurled her wings and took to the sky, scanning the devastation from above, her dragon eyes sharp enough to spot a coin from a mile away.
Nothing.
"Did the blast completely erase him?"
Then the hair on the back of her neck rose. Cold sweat broke out across her skin. She hadn’t sensed anyone approach. Hadn’t heard a single footstep.
But something was behind her and before she could react, something ice-cold and sharp, pressing right against the base of her skull.

Her vision turned and the world spun sideways. She heard a heavy thud somewhere below her

A large, rough hand grabbed her by the hair and turned her around until she was staring up at a face she never expected to see again.
"Andrew."
"H-How are you still alive?" Elyssa gasped, her eyes widened in disbelief.
He didn’t have a single scratch on him, standing there in his human form as if the ancestor’s attack didn’t even happen.
Andrew ignored her question, staring at her decapitated head in fascination.
"The life force of a dragon is truly remarkable. Your heart was sliced through and you still healed. Now your head has been cut off, and you’re still talking. Fascinating, truly fascinating."

What Elyssa didn’t know was that Andrew had been standing right here a minute ago with a system prompt blinking in front of his face.

Her lips moved, trying to form a curse, but only a bloody gurgle came out. Life was starting to drain from her glowing eyes, but the malice remained.
She stared at Andrew with a mix of fear, anger and reluctance.
Even after her ancestor had taken action, it still wasn’t enough to kill this cockroach.
The glow in her eyes dimmed, then went out like a snuffed candle. Her face went slack.
Her body shifted. The massive dragon form shimmered and shrank, scales receding, claws retracting, until all that remained was the human shape underneath. And the head in his grip changed too, reverting from the fearsome dragonkin visage back to the face of a young woman who was beautiful.
