Chapter 24: The Calamity Spider

The weak spiders turned to ash in the blink of an eye, while the stronger ones took a few seconds before they were incinerated. Tens of thousands were killed within seconds, their formation shattered entirely, yet twice that number remained alive.

This was expected, given that their numbers were unbelievably large. Calmly Alvin directed his gaze toward the fifth member of their team, and said: "Take out the Dissonance Poison."

After that, he swept everyone with his sharp eyes, and issued several commands at once: "Selene, extinguish the flames, and clear the smoke. Willard, use the Detection skill, and keep a close watch on the Calamity Spider, we must not allow it to escape."

Finally, his gaze settled on Carlos. With a kind of hesitation he said: "As for you Carlos, do what you do best, wipe out the remaining spiders."

"This is what I have been waiting for." The smile returned to Carlos’s face, he drew his massive axe, and without any hesitation, surged toward the burning area. In a few steps, he covered a distance of three hundred meters.

He passed through the intensely hot flames as though they were nothing, shattered the charred trees with his steel-hard body, and the moment he reached the confused and terrified spiders, he swung his axe.

"Hwaah!" An invisible force burst from his axe, forming into a fierce razor-sharp tornado. Hundreds of spiders were torn to pieces, and their remains flew in every direction.

"Did you enjoy that? Do not worry, I have more." Carlos let out a savage laugh, and swung his axe a second time, and a third, and so the wind storms continued bursting in every direction around him, turning his surroundings into more of a ruin than they already were.

The spiders were unable to resist, and were wiped out at a rapid pace, until only a few remained. The intelligent among them realized there was no chance before them, so they fled at their maximum speed hoping to survive this butcher.

Within a short time, the area was leveled to the ground, and everything in it turned to pieces and remains, even the flames that had been voraciously consuming the place mostly died out.

The rest watched him from afar with resigned expressions, and could only sigh. They knew Carlos’s nature well, yet he still astonished them with how savage he was every time he fought.

"This man is hopeless." Selene shook her head in disappointment, and without wasting any more time, she raised her staff high, and the gem glowed with a faint grey light.

It was easy to start fires, but extinguishing them and removing their effects was a more difficult matter, so she needed to focus more, and exert greater effort.

From a certain angle, it might seem that the right choice would have been not to use fire in the first place, for the spiders that had attacked them, despite their large numbers, did not pose a threat to them.

But the true purpose of this attack was to terrify the Calamity Spider, and affect its psyche, for it in truth fears fire greatly, and this was logical, given that it was one of its few weaknesses.

"Ah..." Deep within the vast web nest, the spider woman’s body shook, and she let out a muffled moan. Her face turned pale, and a little blood seeped from her nose.

The sight of those highly destructive fireballs caused her to be struck with panic, and this violent fluctuation in her emotions affected her evolution process, and caused her to suffer a minor backlash.

’Damn it... why now? Why? These filthy humans, they have ruined everything. They have destroyed my only chance to evolve to A-Rank.’

She gritted her teeth, and desperately searched for a solution that could save her. Fighting was not an option, for she was weak currently, and her power barely reached C-Rank. Fleeing, well, that was possible, and moving would not affect her evolution slumber much.

But it was clear that the humans would not allow her to do so. One of them was focused on her, and any movement she made would be easily detected, so this option was impossible as well.

Anger rose within her, and an unbelievable killing intent emanated from her. The webs around her trembled, then suddenly all the pressure emanating from her disappeared, and she coughed up a large amount of blood.

"Damn, damn, I have no other choice."

The Evolution Slumber was an extremely sensitive process, requiring perfect conditions and complete stability of body and mind. Any external interference, or violent emotional disturbance, could lead to very grave consequences.

In simple cases, these consequences are limited to backlash reactions and fairly serious internal injuries. As for the worst case, the evolution could fail catastrophically, and this was something that mostly ends in death.

No matter how hard she tried to avoid the bitter truth, she had only one solution before her: forcefully stopping her advancement, and fighting for her life, and this meant that all the effort she had exerted throughout the past ten years would go to waste.

It was hard to imagine the amount of hatred that filled her chest. As a final attempt to save her only chance of advancing to A-Rank, she communicated with the humans.

Outside, things had calmed down, Selene had gotten rid of the flames and smoke, and the air had become clear, while Carlos had chased down the few remaining spiders and eliminated them.

Because he had left his back exposed for a moment, a jumping spider pounced on him, and bit him from his head, but the spider’s sharp fangs shattered the moment they struck his shiny bald head.

With an unsettling expression, he turned around, and embraced the spider in his arms, then crushed it.

The fifth member of their team was a man in his late thirties named Baldwin, his features were somewhat handsome, and his hair was soft and golden reaching his neck, as for his height, it was average.

His clothes were a little strange, wearing a loose white outfit, over which he wore metal armor that protected only the important parts of his body, and on his head he wore a large pointed hat, and on his back hung a short green cloak, on which was a symbol of a purple plant.

With extreme care, Baldwin took out several glass vials from his storage ring, and removed the sealing scrolls attached to them.

Alvin stood at the front, his eyes fixed on the wall of massive silk webs, which extended for an unknown distance. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

Suddenly, Willard, who had been watching the Calamity Spider, detected a strange movement. "She intends to do something."

The moment he fell silent, a hazy black projection of the spider appeared in the web wall. The eight red eyes stared at them with malice, and from every direction a rough female voice echoed, filled with killing intent.

"You despicable humans, leave before I kill you."
