Chapter 626: A Friendly Face

Gorund sighed as he looked around at the bunker full of civilians. Most of them are children. Any capable man or woman was out firing weapons at the enemy craft that were bombing them. While the injured, weak, and old were left behind. "Do not worry children. We will be fine." He lied to them as he grabbed his handheld cannon.

It was a design with an homage to his deceased friend who he learned about the beauty of railguns from.

He walked out of the door to the exposed facility that had been bombed open. There were a few mortella inside fighting in hand to hand combat with what remains of his people. He lifted his cannon and fired it at a mortella that was about to kill one of his subordinates.

The massive cannonball slammed into the Mortella’s chest and sent them flying. Another of the mortella quickly started moving to him when they all froze and took steps back from their respective opponents before they glowed gold and then disappeared.

Then he heard it a moment later. He was not the only one either as they all looked out through the massive hole that one of their bombs had caused. Flying towards them, ready to drop another set of bombs were the unique bomber craft they were seeing for the first time.

"Looks like this is the end..." He heard one of the colonists turned soldier say.

"I fucking hate this..." Another whispered. freewebnovёl.ƈom

Gorund let out a breath of air as they watched them come out the clouds. But just as he could see the first of their bomb doors opening he heard something else that actually made him for the first time in a year, almost burst out in joy. An explosion.

The bomber craft farthest in the back exploded and he only saw a gray blur as several of the other crafts exploded as well. Including the front most one whose fireball of a ship flew long and exploded some area past them.

But before he could relish in the excitement that someone had come to save them. The area around them glowed before the mortella that disappeared then reappeared. But they looked around in confusion for a moment.

Then they could all hear something else and Gorund’s jaw nearly dropped as they saw burning chunks of mortella ship falling through the sky. "Great God of Gold." Gorund whispered. Then the gray blur came back and the last few bomber craft exploded overhead.

That pulled him back out of his reverie and he aimed his handheld cannon at the nearest morella and fired.

Of course it would jam. The mortella looked at him and a spear appeared in its hand. It prepared to skewer him when the gray blur flew overhead again. But this time a white blur fell from it before stopping just short of Gorund.

The mortella froze as Gorund went through several different emotions and then settled on screaming in excitement. "JACE YOU BLOODY BASTARD YOU ARE ALIVE!"

—-------------------

Jace stood up fully and looked around at the mortella that were in the partially destroyed bunker. The one that was coming towards Gorund was still frozen. But that was because it had not yet processed that it was dead.

"The sky’s clear. If the warships are down you can bring down the wyvern." Jace instructed as he walked past the dead and still standing mortella before the top half of the shell slid off the lower half.

Then he jumped forward. He moved so smoothly. It was amazing. For some reason he no longer felt sluggish or held back. He could now move with a full range of movement. That only became more pronounced as he moved behind another mortella and sliced through them.

He did not even bother slowing down as he moved onto the next opponent, then another. By the time he was done moving around the room. Only a half minute had passed and the mortella, the single-winged variety, did not stand a chance.

He slowed back down and let out a breath of air that actually fogged up his visor for a moment. "Well then, I cleared the enemies on the ground as well." He switched to external audio a moment later. "Gorund. I have a transport coming to bring all of you to my cruiser. Get everyone outside. Do you have any injured or anyone that needs help?"

Gorund looked around and then shook his head. "Just the children. They were all we were able to save." His eyes then snapped down to the blade in Jace’s hand. "Did you alter your sword?"

"I did. I am surprised we found you out here. I figured you would be working on the design for making our galaxy invisible." Jace pointed out as the surviving combatants slowly began pulling themselves together and checking their comrades.

"I was." Gorund nodded. "I needed to find the mineral you suggested for an energy source. But I was unable to find anything. Eventually I got roped in to assist the evacuation, which did not go well. Because the evacuation route was cut off."

"Probably because you were not looking in the right way." Jace chuckled as he moved to the door where he was detecting several smaller lifeforms. He opened the door.

BANG!

A bullet ricocheted off his armor and he stopped for a moment before walking fully inside and looking around at the scared kids and zeroed in on the one that was holding a fire arm. "Who are you? You did not do the special knock!" The kid holding a gun yelled. He looked like he was only maybe ten or eleven.

"My name is Jace and I am a Spectre. I am also here to bring all of you kids to safety." Jace explained as he moved to the side so Gorund could move in.

"The bunker’s reactor is set to go off in half an hour. Should I increase the time?" Gorund asked.

"No, that should be enough time." Jace shook his head. "Get a headcount and get everyone outside." Jace told him as he thought of something. "Do you have broadcasting equipment?"

"No, I scrapped it just before you arrived." Gorund shook his head as he started physically counting the children. He stopped when he was all done. "We are missing one."

Jace kneeled and put a hand on the ground. He closed his eyes and could then see everything on the planet. From the mountain of bodies the mortella had stacked. To the injured that Gorund’s subordinates had missed outside who were unconscious but still alive.

Then he found her. The missing child. "I found her. She went deeper underground to the reactor room. Get them out of here." He instructed as he stood up and walked to a door that was supposed to be sealed but was not.

He walked through it and down the stairs until he arrived just outside of the reactor room where the girl was crouched sitting outside of the door with her head on her knees. He kneeled next to her and reached up a hand. "Come on, we are leaving."

"Where? To another planet where we will all die." The girl asked through quiet tears. "I am bad luck. Everyone who helps me dies and everywhere I go, they follow."

Jace froze and then sighed before he sat down and then reached up. Pressing the latches on his helmet. There was a wisp of air before he started pulling off his helmet and looking the child in the eyes when she looked up in intrigue.

"People do die and more will likely die. But why would that be your fault? Did you ask the mortella to attack us?" Jace asked.

"No, but... they keep coming." The girl declared through sniffles and tears.

"Of course they do." Jace chuckled. "The mortella are just one of the many people that want what is ours."

"Could we just give it to them?" The girl asked as she wiped away some tears and snot with a sleeve.

"No." Jace shook his head. "These people are not going to stop wanting until we turn them away. They will take until we have nothing left." He then raised a gloved hand and ’booped’ her on the nose. "That is why they are attacking. Death does not follow you around. It has better things to do."

"Hmf." She sniffled. "Like what?"

"Well..." Jace smiled as he ruffled your hair. "You might have heard. But there is this big mean group called the mortella. Death is too busy collecting their souls to worry about following around a little girl."

The girl quietly laughed before reaching up and grabbing onto him. He pulled her up into his arm and held her while he held his katana and helmet in his other hand. He dematerialized both of them as he walked back up the stairs.

Soon he was arriving outside of the bunker where the Wyvern was being filled with people and Gorund was standing near the Hound’s tooth looking at it in awe.
