Chapter 288: Chapter 288: Discharged from the Hospital
Li Wan nodded. "We really have him to thank for this. We’ll have to thank him properly later."
Li Wan was deeply grateful to Gu Xinsheng. Although she didn’t remember the recent past, with her mind now clear, she knew how hard Gu Xinsheng had worked on her behalf. She never imagined a classmate from her youth, someone she hadn’t seen in so long, would help her so much. This was a debt she would have to repay.
When Su Qing heard this, she understood immediately. ’Looks like she’s not thinking about him romantically at all.’ So, Su Qing dropped the subject. Matters of the heart required mutual affection. Even though she was really rooting for Gu Xinsheng and Li Wan, it was ultimately their business, and as someone from the younger generation, it wasn’t her place to interfere.
As for whether Gu Xinsheng could win the fair lady’s hand in the future, that would be entirely up to him.
Su Qing stopped talking about Gu Xinsheng and instead told Li Wan that she had bought a courtyard house in Beijing. Together, they began to dream about the wonderful life that awaited them after Li Wan was discharged from the hospital.
Li Wan was utterly astonished that her daughter was so capable. Not only had she escaped the Old Su Family on her own, but she had also earned enough money to buy a house in a big city like Beijing—and not one of those cramped, tube-style apartments, but a traditional courtyard house!
"Qingqing, you’ve suffered so much all these years." Even without Su Qing going into detail, Li Wan could imagine it all. A teenage girl accomplishing so much on her own—she must have endured untold hardships. The fact that the money for the house came from selling ginseng filled Li Wan with dread. After all, hadn’t Su Shengjun died deep in those very mountains? And her Qingqing, the daughter she had cherished and pampered her whole life, had gone into the mountains alone to gather ginseng. The thought of the hardships she must have faced was unbearable!
"Mom, it’s all in the past. Let’s not bring it up again," Su Qing said with a smile. "Li Aiguo, his wife, and Li Yuan have all been sentenced and sent to the farm. They’ve been punished. Everything is over now. Our good days are just getting started."
"Yes, yes," Li Wan nodded, her eyes brimming with tears.
Su Qing gave a faint smile and lowered her gaze. ’Being sent to a farm? As if it could be that easy for what Li Aiguo, his wife, and Li Yuan did. The years of suffering they put my mother through, not to mention their attempts to harm me—I won’t let it go so easily. Some scores are best settled with one’s own hands.’
As mother and daughter spoke, Gu Xinsheng walked in from outside the room. Seeing him, Su Qing raised an eyebrow slightly. Her earlier praise of him to Li Wan hadn’t been random; she had sensed his presence just outside the door. ’It’s a shame,’ she thought. ’Mom clearly only sees him as an old friend.’
The fact that Gu Xinsheng was only entering now was clearly an attempt to avoid the earlier awkwardness, but his excitement at seeing Li Wan fully recovered was impossible to suppress.
"Li Wan, are you completely better? Have your memories returned?"
The moment Gu Xinsheng came in, Li Wan expressed her gratitude, and he, in turn, couldn’t suppress his excitement as he spoke.
Li Wan smiled. "Yes. Thank you so much for everything. Qingqing told me all about it. If it weren’t for you, I’d still be locked up in that house by Li Aiguo and the others, and I never would have recovered."
"I—I just couldn’t stand what Li Aiguo and his family were doing." Gu Xinsheng’s face flushed. Even though he had overheard Li Wan’s earlier words and felt a pang of disappointment, facing her now—lucid and smiling warmly at him—still made him nervous and flustered. His heart pounded like a drum.
Fortunately, Huo Yafeng came to his rescue.
Upon learning that Li Wan had made a full recovery, a jubilant Huo Yafeng rushed over with several other doctors. They gave Li Wan another thorough examination and then happily announced that she was completely healthy, with no lingering side effects, and could be discharged at any time.
And so, the very next day, Li Wan was discharged from the hospital and went with Su Qing to the courtyard house on Xiluo Alley. Gu Xinsheng helped them with the discharge and then departed.
For one thing, with propriety between men and women to consider, it wouldn’t be appropriate for him to linger at the Xiluo Alley courtyard. For another, he had a number of matters to attend to. He simply arranged with Su Qing and Li Wan that once he finished his work in a day or two, they would all have a meal together to celebrate her recovery.
However, on the very afternoon Li Wan returned to Xiluo Alley, the Li family showed up.
