Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Research Institute

Qiao Siyuan watched Jiang Li’s departing figure, then turned to Chen Xiufang, his face twisted in a snarl. "Mom, I’m your only son! You know what you have to do, Mom!

"We talked about this before. If we really get caught... Mom, don’t worry. As long as I can get out, I’ll definitely get revenge on that bitch Jiang Li.

"The research institute is still looking for her. As long as I get out, I’ll make her pay a hundred times over."

Qiao Siyuan grabbed Chen Xiufang’s hand.

Watching the monitor, Huo Qing slammed his hand on the table. ’This damn kid still isn’t talking.’

After coming out, Jiang Li got a cup of hot water and drank it.

"Here."

Jiang Li looked up at the two rabbits in Lu Xingye’s hand and frowned. "Why are you giving these to me?"

"A thank you for helping us solve the case. Just take them." Lu Xingye pressed the rabbits into her arms.

"Sister Qinghe said I can become a full-fledged officer after we go back this time."

Jiang Li squeezed the rabbits in her arms. They were fluffy and felt nice. She hung the smaller one on her bag and placed the larger one on her lap.

Lu Xingye silently watched her actions. "Ahem, when are you heading back? Want to go together? We could keep each other company."

"I’ll go back after Qiao Siyuan’s case is closed."

Jiang Li smiled, looking at the face of Little Li sitting on her lap.

Jiang Li looked at Lu Xingye in front of her. "Thank you, Officer Lu. Little Li really likes it!"

Seeing the gentle smile on Jiang Li’s lips, Lu Xingye pursed his. They had only been apart for one night. ’So who is she looking at?’

Jiang Li sensed Lu Xingye’s gaze and looked up at him.

Lu Xingye cleared his throat. "Well, you should get some rest. Just let us know if you need anything."

Jiang Li nodded and lowered her head, lost in thought.

After walking some distance away, Lu Xingye looked back at Jiang Li. He took out his phone, then put it down again.

’What if it’s not that thing? Forget it, forget it.’

Lu Xingye went back to following up on the case.

Jiang Li didn’t go back that night, sleeping in a room Huo Qing had arranged. "The bed is a bit small."

"It’s not small. As long as I’m with you, Sister, nowhere is small."

Jiang Li paused in her task of making the bed and turned to look at Jiang Li next to her. The alter was holding the rabbit doll, blinking her big, sparkling eyes at her.

"Little Li, I absolutely won’t let anything happen to you this time."

A smile with two dimples appeared on Jiang Li’s chubby little face. "Mhm, mhm, I believe in you, Sister."

"Go to sleep. In a few days, I’ll take you to my new home."

Jiang Li patted her head, and after getting into bed, she scooted over to leave room for her.

In the interrogation room, Lu Xingye faced Qiao Siyuan.

"What are you staring at me for? I already told you, my mom forced me to do all of it. I’m not the mastermind.

"Officer, if I didn’t do what she said, my mom would hit me, curse at me, and not give me food.

"I’m a victim too! If you’re going to blame someone, blame my mom. She’s the one who brought those kids over. I didn’t know anything about it."

Qiao Siyuan leaned back in his chair, looking at Lu Xingye.

Lu Xingye glared at him coldly. "Qiao Siyuan, do you think quibbling like this will lessen your punishment?

"You’re wrong. Don’t forget, we have footage of you committing all the crimes. You claim you were forced, but in reality, your mother was the one being coerced."

Lu Xingye slammed the evidence down in front of him.

Qiao Siyuan frowned, picked up the evidence Lu Xingye had thrown down, and seethed with rage as he looked at it.

"It’s that psycho Jiang Li again!"

’Damn it, I hid it under the ceramic tiles, and she still found it.’

’No wonder she was smashing everything in my house the first day she came over. She must have guessed it from the start.’

"Shut up!" Lu Xingye roared. "You keep calling her a psycho, but I think you’re the real psycho here."

Qiao Siyuan looked at Lu Xingye and suddenly burst out laughing. "HAHAHA, she *is* mentally ill! She should be thanking me.

"If I hadn’t sent her for treatment back then, she’d still be a monster in everyone’s eyes."

Lu Xingye stared at him. "You sent her for treatment?"

"Isn’t that right? Jiang Li got better after she came back. But who would’ve thought, not only is she not grateful, she’s repaying my kindness with malice.

"Pah! I never should have sent her in in the first place."

Qiao Siyuan looked at Lu Xingye. "Why do you care so much about her? Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for her?

"She’s a psycho. Aren’t you afraid you’ll catch it?"

"You!"

The officer next to him quickly grabbed Lu Xingye. "Alright, alright, you should step out for a bit."

Lu Xingye ended up being pushed out of the room. He slammed a fist against the wall in anger, then sat down to the side and started to collect his thoughts.

...

「Seven days later」

Qiao Siyuan was sentenced to death. Chen Xiufang was sentenced to over ten years to life in prison, along with confiscation of property or a fine.

Cao Tianwang, for the murder of over nine hundred infants, was sentenced to death with immediate execution.

The news report caused an uproar as soon as it was released, with some people gathering at the courthouse entrance just to spit on the ground in disgust.

When Wu Xueyan, who was resting at her parents’ house during her pregnancy, learned of the news, the object in her hand fell to the floor with a CLATTER.

’I can’t help but feel relieved that Qiao Siyuan and I never got our marriage certificate. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have escaped this either.’

However... she looked down, her face full of worry, and caressed the child in her belly. She was almost five months along now.

"Little Xue, are you still going to keep this child?"

Wu Xueyan’s mother frowned at her daughter. If you asked her, the child had to go. She had heard that children with this "super-male syndrome" were like demon children brought into the world.

Hearing her mother’s words, a flicker of conflict crossed Wu Xueyan’s eyes before she shook her head.

"Mom, this is my child. He’ll be born in just a few more months. Even without Qiao Siyuan, I’m going to give birth to him."

Wu Xueyan caressed her belly, the worry in her heart not lessening in the slightest. ’Am I really doing the right thing?’

Jiang Li followed Lu Xingye and the others out of the courthouse, planning to return to her own little home the next day.

Jiang Li’s steps suddenly faltered as she looked to her right.

"What’s wrong?" Lu Xingye followed her gaze, but there was no one there.

Jiang Li’s brow furrowed. "It’s nothing. I’m heading back tomorrow."

After Jiang Li left, a figure emerged from a corner. The man picked up his phone and made a call. "Hello, Professor. I saw her clearly. It’s her—the girl from the research institute three years ago."

"Have someone keep a close eye on her. See if there’s anything else unusual about her. If there is, bring her in immediately." The man on the other end of the line let out a sinister laugh.

’After all these years, this is the first time I’ve seen a primary and an alter coexist so peacefully, even becoming the most important person to each other.’

’It’s a shame the subject suddenly ran away when the experiment was only halfway through. Otherwise, I could have had a good long chat with the alter, and then watched them destroy each other.’

But... the man’s expression darkened. ’Even now, I can’t figure out who the primary personality actually is.’

Elsewhere, in a lavishly decorated living room, a man sat with his legs crossed, looking at the person in front of him.

"Are you saying that the last den being busted, as well as the incident at Building Eleven, might have been because someone leaked information?"

"Yes, yes. How else could it be such a coincidence? But those cops protected that person well. They didn’t even mention their name when the case closed."

The man clicked his tongue impatiently. "Then what are you standing around for? Get someone to keep a close watch on the police station.

"As for the Building Eleven incident, just pick someone to take the fall."

"Understood."

"Also, go find a few thugs to divert the police’s attention."
