Chapter 32: Chapter 32: So Scared They Almost Cried for Mommy
On the way back, Jiang Li found herself wondering just how far Qiao Siyuan and his family would go.
Jiang Li’s brow twitched as an idea struck her. She took out her phone, went to her blocked list, and found a name that had been sitting there for a long time: Wu Xueyan, Qiao Siyuan’s good friend.
After unblocking her, Jiang Li posted to her social media feed: [As I thought, he still loves me.] Attached was a screenshot of a money transfer.
She had photoshopped it to show a transfer of 52,000.
She refused to believe Wu Xueyan could see this and remain indifferent. After posting, Jiang Li gazed out the window at the scenery, not saying another word.
Elsewhere, Wu Xueyan was looking at the screenshot Jiang Li had posted, fuming. She had wanted to buy a purse these past few days, but Qiao Siyuan kept telling her he was tight on cash. Tight on cash!
And the result? He had sent Jiang Li 52,000. That was fifty-two thousand!
Wu Xueyan was so angry her stomach clenched. She grabbed her phone and immediately called Qiao Siyuan.
Qiao Siyuan was still waiting anxiously for Jiang Li to return, his heart pounding with a guilty conscience. When his phone suddenly rang, it scared him so badly he broke out in a cold sweat.
Seeing the name "Xue Yan" on the screen, he answered with a sigh.
"Little Xue, didn’t I tell you? This is a critical time. We shouldn’t contact each other unless it’s necessary."
"Qiao Siyuan! You scumbag! You sent Jiang Li fifty-two thousand behind my back! She even posted it on her feed! Why don’t you just go die, you bastard!"
Qiao Siyuan was completely baffled by her tirade. Fifty-two thousand? Even if he had that kind of money, there was no way he would transfer it to that woman, Jiang Li.
"What are you talking about, Little Xue? Don’t go making false accusations. She said she didn’t have money for a taxi, so I just sent her fifty-two."
As he spoke, Qiao Siyuan quickly opened her social media feed to check. There was nothing there.
"Ahem, Little Xue, maybe you saw it wrong."
"How could I!" Wu Xueyan was about to take a screenshot, but when she went to look for the post again, it was gone.
Wu Xueyan let out a puzzled "Huh?" ’Could I really have seen it wrong? Impossible!’
"Alright, Little Xue, I have to go. Jiang Li is about to get home. I’m hanging up."
Qiao Siyuan hung up the phone. Just as he did, the doorbell rang.
Qiao Siyuan and Chen Xiufang exchanged a look and immediately got ready.
Qiao Siyuan went to open the door. Seeing Jiang Li standing there, he put on a gentle smile.
"Lili, you’re back. Are you tired today? Why did you go to the police station? Did something happen? Why didn’t you contact me?"
"I went to the police station to sit for a bit. I feel a sense of security in there."
Jiang Li walked in as she spoke, her gaze immediately landing on Chen Xiufang, who was wearing an apron.
"Lili, you’re back! I was just being a muddle-headed old fool before. Don’t hold it against me. Come, come, I made your favorite dishes today."
A smile appeared on Chen Xiufang’s face. ’Who the hell knows what she likes to eat? She’ll just have to eat whatever I made. Take it or leave it.’
Jiang Li glanced around. ’Looks like I really wore them out today. They managed to clean up most of the house in a single day.’
At the dinner table, Chen Xiufang looked at Jiang Li. "Lili, you and Si Yuan have known each other for so long. Why don’t we hold another wedding ceremony this time?
"You know, after the scene you caused last time, all the money the family put out for the wedding went down the drain.
"How about this? Mom won’t ask for much. You just take out one hundred thousand, and I’ll book you a venue at the biggest hotel downtown. We’ll use the best of everything."
Jiang Li’s mouth twitched. They were truly shameless, asking for a hundred thousand just like that.
"I don’t have any money. Even my taxi fare today was paid for by Qiao Siyuan. You know I have to go to the doctor and buy medicine every month. Last time, Qiao Siyuan angered me so much my old illness relapsed.
"It took a lot to treat it. I asked Qiao Siyuan, and he said he doesn’t mind my condition, but the treatment fees are conservatively at least a hundred thousand a year..."
"One hundred thousand!" Chen Xiufang shot up from her chair. "Why don’t you just go rob someone!"
Jiang Li frowned, her face darkening as she looked up at her. "My chest feels tight, my head is dizzy, and I’m feeling very irritated."
As she finished speaking casually, a chopstick flew past Chen Xiufang’s ear and shattered a cup behind her.
As the sound of shattering glass echoed, Chen Xiufang’s body trembled in fright, her heart pounding in her chest.
’Why do I feel like it’s my chest that’s feeling a little tight now?’
"Mom, Mom! Let’s not talk about this, not this! Lili, let’s eat, let’s eat."
Qiao Siyuan’s voice trembled as he placed a piece of meat for Jiang Li, his hand shaking so badly that just as it neared her bowl, SPLAT, the meat fell to the floor.
For a moment, the dinner table was so quiet you couldn’t hear a breath.
Qiao Siyuan held his breath, a lump of saliva caught in his throat, too scared to swallow.
Jiang Li’s eyes darted between the two of them before she picked up her chopsticks and took a piece of green vegetable from the dish in front of Chen Xiufang.
Only then did Qiao Siyuan and Chen Xiufang dare to move again.
"Eat, let’s eat. We won’t mention those things. We’re all family from now on. Si Yuan was right, we don’t mind your condition."
Chen Xiufang lowered her head and started eating the food in her bowl, though inwardly she was so scared she wanted to curse. ’This Jiang Li really is a psycho. That was absolutely terrifying.’
Qiao Siyuan took out a bottle of liquor.
Jiang Li glanced at it and said lightly, "The doctor said I can’t drink. It will worsen my condition."
Qiao Siyuan’s hand trembled, and he nearly dropped the bottle.
"Have some soup. We’ll have soup, then." Chen Xiufang quickly grabbed a bowl and ladled some soup for Jiang Li.
Under their expectant gazes, Jiang Li picked up the bowl and drank.
Chen Xiufang and Qiao Siyuan quickly ladled bowls for themselves and drank as well.
After dinner, Jiang Li leaned back in her chair, a smile playing on her lips as she watched the two of them whispering secretively in the kitchen.
"Son, how... how did Jiang Li turn into this? I was nearly scared to death just now." The memory of the flying chopstick sent a fresh wave of fear through Chen Xiufang.
"Didn’t I tell you Jiang Li was different now? You didn’t believe me. Do you believe me now?"
"Aiya, forget it. We’ve already tricked her into coming back. Jiang Li is what they call online a ’menace to society’ personality type. We’re actually doing a good deed here."
Qiao Siyuan nodded in agreement, his resolve hardening. If they let Jiang Li go now, it would be far too easy for her to get revenge on them later.
"The drug should be taking effect by now."
As he said this, they both glanced outside. Sure enough, Jiang Li was slumped on the sofa, gradually falling asleep.
Seeing Jiang Li unconscious, Chen Xiufang let out a long sigh of relief. "Hah! Little bitch. At dinner, she was even waiting for us to serve her before she would eat.
"She would never have guessed that we put the drug on the tableware."
Chen Xiufang grumbled as she pulled a talisman from her pocket and stuffed it into Qiao Siyuan’s hand. "The master said that as long as you hang this on Jiang Li when you sleep with her, and keep it on her until she has a child, everything will be fine."
Qiao Siyuan looked at the talisman in his hand, then at Jiang Li outside.
"Okay, Mom, I know. You should go home now."
Qiao Siyuan sent Chen Xiufang away. It would be difficult for him to proceed with her there.
Chen Xiufang patted Qiao Siyuan’s arm. "Alright, Mom gets it. You go and relax a bit, too."
After Chen Xiufang left, Qiao Siyuan carried the sleeping Jiang Li back to the only undamaged room.
