Chapter 143: Chapter 139: I’ll Call You Miss Georgia from Now On
An appointment six months out was enough to prove just how in-demand this Attorney Shaw was at Everlight.
Unwilling to let this opportunity slip by, Lynn Thorne stood up, bent her knees, and knelt before Byron Shaw. "Attorney Shaw, please, you have to help me!"
"Hey, Lynn!" Georgia Thorne immediately stood up to help her sister.
But Lynn pushed her away. "Attorney Shaw, if you don’t help me, I’ll kneel here until you do!"
Byron Shaw was much calmer than Georgia, as if he were used to such scenes.
"Miss Thorne, please get up." Byron sat up straight and helped Lynn to her feet.
"Attorney Shaw, I..."
"I’ll take your case."
"Really?!" Lynn was overjoyed. "Thank you, Attorney Shaw! Thank you so much!"
Byron Shaw smiled gently, softly consoling Lynn while glancing at Georgia out of the corner of his eye.
His gaze held a flicker of interest.
Georgia Thorne furrowed her delicate brows. ’This is all happening too suddenly, too smoothly.’
Attorney Larkin had just broken his contract, and then they immediately ran into Attorney Shaw, who actually agreed to help.
It wasn’t just Georgia who was surprised; even Grace Wagner, who had been with Byron Shaw for years, was too shocked to speak.
"Assistant Wagner, give them my number. And as for the fees... it’s all pro bono."
It took Grace a long moment to react. Only when Byron glanced at her did she snap out of it. "Yes, I understand!"
"Miss Thorne, please come this way." Grace reined in her shock and, reverting to her meticulous assistant persona, spoke to Lynn.
Half an hour later, Georgia and Lynn left the law firm.
Grace returned to Byron’s office and knocked on the door. A voice from inside said, "Come in."
"Attorney Shaw, they’ve left."
Grace placed the consultation materials on his desk. Without looking up, Byron grunted in acknowledgment.
"I’ll be on my way out, then." Seeing there was nothing else, Grace glanced at the man engrossed in his work and turned to leave.
Just as she reached the door, Grace turned back. "Attorney Shaw, I don’t understand why you took this case, especially for free."
Byron Shaw was a big name in the legal world. A graduate of a Laurel League law program in Vesperia, he had shot to fame by winning a case everyone said was impossible, instantly becoming a hot commodity.
In the years since, every case Byron took on was a guaranteed win, to the point where his name became synonymous with victory.
At the height of his wild success in Vesperia’s legal circles, this brilliant man had suddenly returned to Sinea and chosen Everlight Law Firm.
And she had followed him all the way from Vesperia to Sinea, to Portmire.
Grace didn’t understand what Byron stood to gain from this case. He certainly didn’t need to take on minor lawsuits like this to build his reputation.
As she finished speaking, the man in the large executive chair dropped his pen and pinched the bridge of his nose.
His gaze was sharp and icy. "Assistant Wagner, which cases I take is my business. You just need to do your job. Don’t cross the line."
Byron bit out the last four words, and Grace’s face went deathly pale.
The color drained from her red lips. She gave a stiff reply, "Yes!"
"If there’s a next time, you can pack your things."
"I understand!"
Clutching the files to her chest, Grace turned the doorknob and left.
In the quiet office, the sound of rustling paper could be heard.
He tossed aside the file in his hands and opened the contact information Grace had recorded.
Grace had been with him for four or five years; she was steady and meticulous, so she had written down both of their numbers.
He glanced at the numbers and saved Georgia Thorne’s to his phone.
’It’s just that Georgia Thorne is refreshingly unconventional, easy on the eyes, and... also...’
He got up and stood at the window, his gaze drifting down. Georgia and Lynn hadn’t gone far.
’So much has changed in the years I’ve been away,’ he thought. ’So much that I can’t even recognize people anymore.’
Downstairs from the law office, Lynn said in disbelief, "That Attorney Shaw is such a good person! He didn’t even charge a single cent!"
’Who would have thought you could find a lawyer who works for free these days?’
Georgia hummed in response. While she was looking around the law firm earlier, she had seen the introductions for Everlight’s attorneys.
This Attorney Shaw was highly renowned. Many powerful and wealthy people hired him, and each case cost millions.
For him to just offer his services for free... it didn’t quite add up.
When Georgia got back to her company, she looked up Byron Shaw online. His reputation was indeed huge.
He was a Vesperian of Sinean descent who had been doing extremely well in Vesperia before suddenly returning.
After Byron Shaw took the case, he didn’t contact them at all.
Lynn waited at home, anxious every day. On the fifth day, the call finally came.
It was Byron Shaw himself, calling Georgia Thorne’s phone.
"Miss Thorne, this is Byron Shaw. Are you free this evening? I’d like to meet and discuss the progress of the case."
Georgia frowned and started to say, "Attorney Shaw, this matter..."
"You’re not Miss Lynn Thorne?"
"...No, I’m her sister, Georgia Thorne."
"My apologies. You both have the same surname. My assistant must have mixed up your numbers."
Byron’s gentle voice came through the phone. Georgia replied, "It’s alright. I’ll ask my sister if she’s free and get back to you, Attorney Shaw."
"Thank you for your trouble."
After hanging up, Byron looked at his phone. About five minutes later, a text message came in.
It was just two words, concise and clear: "She’s free."
Byron smiled, sent her the address for their evening meeting, and a few seconds later, followed up with a "Thank you."
Georgia put down her phone. Still feeling uneasy, she sent Lynn’s phone number to Byron.
Lynn didn’t feel comfortable going alone and insisted on Georgia coming with her.
The two of them met at the restaurant entrance. This time, they were meeting a lawyer even more famous than Aaron Larkin, so they both arrived early.
After waiting for about ten minutes, Byron Shaw walked in. "My apologies, the traffic was bad. I hope you two haven’t been waiting long."
"Not at all, we just got here!" Lynn hurriedly stood up to greet him.
As the dishes were being served, they discussed the progress of the case.
Speaking of which, this Attorney Shaw was incredibly fast. He brought a whole stack of photos.
They were almost all pictures of Finn Sutton’s affair with his mistress before the divorce, mostly taken in out-of-town hotels.
"This is Jasmine Larkin. She met your husband at a business banquet early this year. That very night, they were seen entering a hotel together. They have been seeing each other for nearly a year now." Byron laid out the photos one by one for Lynn to see.
The man in the photos was, of course, Finn Sutton, and the alluring, seductively dressed woman was Jasmine Larkin.
Lynn had seen Jasmine before. ’That pointed chin just screams ’mistress.’ She must have hooked up with plenty of men before Finn. So sleazy.’
"Your husband is clever. He mostly booked hotel rooms with this Miss Larkin in other cities. This photo, outside a hospital, is of your husband accompanying Miss Larkin for a pregnancy check-up. Afterward, your husband bought Miss Larkin an apartment downtown. Here are the photos."
Lynn’s face flushed with anger as she looked at them. To think her husband’s frequent business trips this year were all just to be with his mistress.
There were so many photos. She clutched them in her hand, nearly crushing them. "Attorney Shaw, right now, I just want my child back!"
Georgia stared at the mountain of photos, a cold sweat breaking out on her scalp. ’Where did he get all these? And in such detail?’
’No wonder they say you can cross anyone but a lawyer.’
’They could sue you into oblivion in a matter of minutes.’
Byron noticed Georgia’s stare and smiled gently. "Is there something Miss Thorne is looking for?"
Their eyes met. Georgia hastily looked away, forcing a dry laugh.
"What?"
Lynn, however, thought Byron was speaking to her and looked up, confused. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
Byron chuckled. "You’re both Miss Thorne. I’ve been mixing you up."
"Miss Georgia Thorne, how about I call you Miss Georgia from now on to distinguish you from your sister? What do you think?"
’Two Miss Thornes... it is easy to get them mixed up.’
Georgia smiled, indicating she had no objection.
After they finished discussing the case’s progress, the dinner was more or less over.
To show what a gentleman he was, Byron offered to drive them both home.
Georgia was about to refuse, but Byron spoke first. "Miss Georgia, won’t you even let me be your Flower Protector?"
Facing the debonair man, Georgia couldn’t find a reason to refuse, so she and Lynn got into the car.
The driver drove while Byron sat in the front passenger seat, his eyes fixed on Georgia in the rearview mirror.
She sat by the window, her dark eyes gazing blankly outside, unfocused, as if she couldn’t find a single point to rest them on.
The corners of her mouth were turned down slightly. She looked down, fiddling with the pinky ring on her left hand, habitually twisting it round and round.
The ring was polished smooth from wear.
The ride was silent until the car stopped in front of the apartment building Georgia was renting.
Byron heard Georgia say softly, "Goodbye, Attorney Shaw."
He replied, "Goodbye."
On the weekend, the Sutton Family called, telling Lynn to come and move her things. If she didn’t, they would throw everything out.
After a ten-year marriage, Lynn had come to see the Sutton house as her own home and had left many of her treasured belongings there.
Lynn told them not to throw anything away; she would go get it.
Lynn had originally planned to go alone, but Georgia was worried.
After all, there was no one in the Sutton Family to protect her now. What if she was mistreated there?
’For all we know, that mistress, Jasmine Larkin, might be living in the Sutton house now.’
’A cuckoo in the nest.’
Lynn wanted to say she wasn’t that fragile. She had done a lot of thinking over the past few days.
She couldn’t possibly forget Finn Sutton so quickly, but their divorce was already irreversible.
Whatever was going on between Finn Sutton and Jasmine Larkin now had nothing to do with her.
The only thing she wanted was her son.
Time flew by, and in the blink of an eye, it was early November.
The sun was bright, but cold gusts of wind blew relentlessly.
Portmire was a coastal city. The wind carried a dampness that stung your face.
Georgia and Lynn went to the Sutton residence in the afternoon.
