Chapter 70: Chapter 70: If She Was Not Meant to Die, Then What Am I?

Faye Yardley lay back, full and content, enjoying a massage from Willow Yardley while she browsed the regional channel.

Two messages from Zachary Pierce were pinned to the top due to their massive number of likes.

One was that monsters enter a weakened state after attacking a raft three times, which is the perfect time to finish them off. The other was that no new monsters will spawn after you’ve captured the kidnapping monster.

This was because most people on the public channel were reporting the same experiences.

[Check out my friendly relationship with this monster. monster_tied_to_pavilion_pillar.jpg]

[Ha, I’m one step ahead. I tamed a pet that can fight for me. giant_wolf.jpg]

[They still respawn even after you capture a monster? That makes no sense.]

Faye Yardley’s eyes crinkled in a smile when she saw this message. ’Good. It looks like monsters will spawn normally tomorrow. As long as hiring Eamon doesn’t stop me from getting rich, it’s fine.’

[So cold, so cold... I need wood to make a fire, wood to repair my raft, and most people want wood for food and drinks. Does any pro have extra wood? I’m begging you!]

[I just want to know when this monster event will end and when the weather will warm up. I’m already nostalgic for the days of fishing up treasure chests.]

[Too real. I thought those were the worst of times, but it turns out they were the best of times. Hahaha...]

Faye Yardley thought for a moment before asking Eleanor Jonas, "Miss Jonas, could you help me look into someone?"

"A friend or relative?"

"An enemy."

On the other end, Eleanor Jonas paused for a moment before replying, "I can. Name."

"Hailey Miles."

"One moment."

"Thanks."

Faye Yardley felt that delays often breed trouble. It was best to nip certain things in the bud and act quickly.

She’d gotten some information from Kyle Lewis, but she wanted to know more.

She only had one Invasion Card. She had to be certain and calculate her move carefully. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

It would kill her if she wasted it for nothing.

Eleanor Jonas was highly efficient and replied to Faye Yardley quickly.

"Hailey Miles’s raft level is Level 4. Her estimated body Attributes are: Constitution 6, Strength 5, agility 5, and Spirit 6-7. She studied Boxing in the past but isn’t skilled. A former police officer, Xavier Thatcher, and a university student, Hugh Langdon, are currently near her. If you’re planning on causing trouble for Hailey Miles through certain means, Xavier Thatcher absolutely won’t turn a blind eye if he sees it."

She then added a special note: "Xavier Thatcher is the kind of cop with an incredibly strong sense of justice. He might just mediate from the sidelines in a normal dispute, but if it involves something more serious, he will definitely get involved."

Faye Yardley was speechless for a long moment before replying, "Thank you, Miss Jonas. Here are some strawberries I just grew. For you to eat." She then sent a Red Envelope.

"Miss Faye, what’s wrong? Did something upset you?"

Lying on her stomach, Faye Yardley lowered her head. "I’m just lamenting how lucky some people are. My Luck Value is supposed to be high, so how can I still lose to fate?"

Willow Yardley disagreed. "I don’t know what fate is, Miss Faye, but I am certain that you are favored by the System."

"Haha... okay, you really did cheer me up."

Faye Yardley figured that even with a police officer bursting with a sense of justice by Hailey Miles’s side, she could still succeed in one strike if she chose the right moment.

’After all, I have a firearm.’

’As long as Hailey Miles’s raft has no special defenses, I can use the Invasion Card to board it directly and just kill her!’

She continued to lurk on the regional channel and came to a conclusion: everyone started fighting monsters at around the same time. Some just killed them faster, some slower, and some could spend the whole day slowly grinding them down.

The reason she was going through all this trouble, even with the Invasion Card, was to be safe.

One should always prepare for the worst.

"Willow, wake me up at 3 a.m."

"Okay."

It had to be said, the massage technique of this butler-style robot, Willow Yardley, surpassed that of most professional masseuses.

As she enjoyed the massage, Faye Yardley made her decision.

「3:30 a.m.」

Dressed in black pants and a black shirt, a black hood covering her head, Faye Yardley held the blood-red Invasion Card in her hand.

"Use."

"Confirm target as Hailey Miles?"

Looking at the familiar avatar, she replied in a cold voice, "Yes."

The next moment, the space on Hailey Miles’s raft rippled, and Faye Yardley, clad in black, stepped out from the distortion.

The corners of her mouth curled up under her mask. ’Smooth. It seems she really doesn’t have any special defenses.’

Hailey Miles’s Wooden House was a basic model. She must have liked light, because one wall of the living room was entirely a floor-to-ceiling glass panel.

She pushed the door, but it didn’t budge. Faye Yardley frowned slightly, mentally calculating the odds of breaking a window to get in.

Then she tried taking a key from her backpack. It slid into the lock. With a gentle turn, the door actually opened.

The door opened, and the key vanished.

Tiptoeing into the house, she smoothly made her way to Hailey Miles’s bedside.

Looking at the beautiful woman sleeping soundly in the bed, a murderous aura flared up inside Faye Yardley.

Even in her sleep, Hailey Miles’s eyes snapped open at that very moment. She shot up into a sitting position. "Who?!"

Faye Yardley didn’t say a word. Her eyes, filled with a coldness and hatred that terrified Hailey Miles, were all the answer she needed. She raised her gun and fired one shot into Hailey’s forehead and another into her chest.

[Congratulations on successfully invading and eliminating the owner of this raft, Hailey Miles. You may now choose to claim her raft and all her resources. Please... BEEP BEEP BEEP... System error detected. Invasion failed.]

Faye Yardley watched in disbelief as the wounds on the supposedly dead Hailey Miles healed right before her eyes. Hailey then lay back down as if nothing had ever happened.

And she, in turn, was forcibly returned to her own raft by the System.

’What is going on?!’

"System, tell me! What just happened? Why did it happen like that? This shouldn’t be possible!"

’I lost an Invasion Card, a key, and two bullets, only for it to tell me I failed?!’

’Could this be any more ridiculous?’

The System remained silent. Faye Yardley was so furious she slammed her fist into the wall.

Finally, she found a clue in the last words of the System’s message.

’Hailey Miles has a life-saving item!’

’Is her Luck Value maxed out?!’

Faye Yardley ripped off her hood and threw it to the ground, gritting her teeth in fury.

Everything had gone so smoothly, only to fall apart at the very end. Anyone would find that unbearable.

If it had been an uphill battle from the start and she’d failed, that would have been one thing.

But she had clearly succeeded, only for it to tell her that her success was an illusion and she had actually failed.

She was about to die from sheer rage.

"AHHHHHH!!!!"

Willow Yardley came to the door. "Miss Faye, what’s wrong?"

"Willow, do you know of any item that can bring someone back from the dead?"

Willow Yardley was silent for a long moment before saying, "The Demon item, Nightmare. It lowers your Luck Value by one point, but you have to be wearing it beforehand."

Hearing the answer, tears streamed down Faye Yardley’s face. If Hailey Miles wasn’t fated to die, then what did that make her?
