Chapter 122: Chapter 122: Surprise! I’ve Got One Too

Faye Yardley didn’t just stand there and wait. Instead, she turned and sprinted toward her raft.

No matter what that thing was, she felt it would be safer on her raft, where she could better react to the situation.

But while she was fast, the black shadow below was even faster.

It had to be said, running inside the barrier of the Water-Repelling Pearl was very different from running on solid ground. The biggest difference was the lack of firm footing. Faye felt that at this speed, she would have covered this distance long ago on land.

But here in the sea, she was just slogging through.

The more anxious she became, the slower she felt she was moving, while the black shadow seemed to be rising terrifyingly fast.

Just as Faye Yardley reached the edge of her raft, the black shadow completely engulfed her.

The moment she was swallowed, Faye Yardley actually calmed down, not panicking at all.

Her surroundings were plunged into darkness. She was still within the protective barrier of the Water-Repelling Pearl, only now she held a Luminous Pearl in her hand.

Its faint, soft glow couldn’t penetrate the inky black substance around her.

What was it, exactly?

Faye Yardley didn’t know, but she didn’t feel any immediate danger.

’But this can’t continue. I can’t stay trapped here forever.’

’I’m fine for now, but will I still be fine once the Water-Repelling Pearl’s time limit is up?’ fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

As she thought about this, she couldn’t help but feel a little anxious, though she refrained from acting rashly.

Huh?

Faye Yardley couldn’t help but move closer to the light barrier, bringing herself nearer to the black curtain. She raised the Luminous Pearl higher, trying to get a clear look at the words that had appeared on the surface of the inscrutable blackness.

The characters—she recognized them individually, but how did they form something she couldn’t comprehend when strung together?

Moreover, just after she had silently memorized a sentence, she looked back to find it had changed slightly. She wasn’t sure if she had misremembered or if it had secretly altered itself.

This time, she just stared at the characters and saw no change. But when she blinked, they had secretly shifted their positions.

So, the characters were constantly moving. Instinct drove Faye Yardley to memorize them.

But memorizing each complete sentence took a huge toll on her Spirit.

After she had memorized five complete sentences, the characters vanished. Her head was throbbing, a clear side effect of mental overexertion.

Faye Yardley rubbed her temples, utterly bewildered.

’Why does a survival game world have Cultivation Technique manuals similar to those from High Martial Cultivation genres?’ she complained internally. ’Are they really going this wild with it?’

Faye Yardley remembered she’d been at the edge of her raft before the darkness swallowed her. ’If I leap upward, will I hit my raft?’

With herself as the center, she took two steps in each direction and then leaped up, trying to touch her raft or its protective shield.

When she found nothing, she returned to her starting point and tried another direction.

Unfortunately, none of her attempts were successful, so she simply sat down.

’That black curtain-like thing outside can’t last forever, can it?’

She wanted to wait it out, but she was afraid she couldn’t outlast it.

Faye Yardley took a torch from her backpack and pushed it through the Water-Repelling Pearl’s barrier, making direct contact with the writhing black curtain.

A SIZZLING sound came from where the torch touched, and then with a WHOOSH, the black curtain vanished. The torch was instantly engulfed and extinguished by the seawater.

Faye Yardley could now see her surroundings clearly. She quickly swam upward, only to find when her head broke the surface that she was now some distance away from her raft.

She still didn’t know what that black shadow was, but it felt like it had appeared just to give her this opportunity.

She touched the hairclip on her head. ’Is my Luck really starting to stack up?’

Back on her raft, Willow Yardley ran over. "Sister, are you all right? Why did you suddenly disappear?"

"You only saw me disappear? You didn’t see *how* I disappeared?"

"No, did something happen?" freёwebnoѵel.com

Faye Yardley looked at her in confusion. ’No way, she didn’t see such a huge black shadow? Can only I see it? Or only humans?’

"Was Eamon outside just now?"

"No, it’s too hot outside. The temperature in the planting room is much more pleasant, so besides sleeping and eating, Eamon has basically been in there all day these past two days."

Faye Yardley said, "Oh. I was just swallowed by a huge black shadow. It was afraid of fire. Do you know what it could be?"

Willow Yardley blinked with confused eyes. After thinking for a moment, she shook her head. "I don’t know. It sounds a bit like the Demon Clan, but Demons are rarely afraid of fire."

"Rarely just means some of them are." After saying this, Faye Yardley couldn’t help but press her temples again. "I’m going to go rest for a bit."

The moment she returned to her room and touched the bed, she fell into a deep sleep.

Willow Yardley stood under the sun, gazing at the sparkling sea and muttering to herself, "What is it... black, huge... but I can’t see it, while Sister can... and it’s afraid of fire..."

Faye Yardley, who usually slept soundly and never dreamed, was now trapped in a nightmare.

In the dream, she was constantly being hunted. No matter how she ran or where she hid, her pursuer always found her.

"Hehe, I found you~"

"Ah!"

Faye Yardley’s eyes flew open. She gasped for air, her heart pounding violently in her chest. She was covered in a cold sweat, her hands trembling uncontrollably.

After several minutes, Faye Yardley gradually calmed down. She raised a still-trembling hand, placed it over her heart, and patted it twice. Her hand then naturally moved to the necklace around her neck.

Her eyes widened instantly. She looked down to see the broken necklace in her grasp, with some fragments scattered on her body and the bed.

This was the Energy Necklace crafted by Islander 78, which she had exchanged points for—an item that could block one fatal attack. Now that it was broken, did that mean the attack she suffered in her dream was real and could have actually harmed her?!

’The only person who wants to kill me is Hailey Miles. Just like I want to kill her, she definitely wants to kill me too.’

After all, no one wants to see someone who’s constantly trying to take their life running around alive and well.

"Ha, I can’t kill you, and you can’t kill me. Didn’t see that coming, did you, Hailey Miles? I have a protective talisman too."

Faye Yardley tried to recall when she could have fallen into this trap. It was probably when she pushed the torch through the Water-Repelling Pearl’s barrier.

While Faye Yardley was feeling grateful to be alive, a small commotion was breaking out on Hugh Langdon’s raft.

"Hugh! Hugh, come quick! I think Hailey’s not doing well!"

Hugh Langdon frowned, wiped the sweat from his face, and strode over. "She probably fainted from the heat. Quick, carry her back inside."

"No, it’s not that... I think she’s stopped breathing."

"Wasn’t she just excited about fishing up an Iron Treasure Box? How could she stop breathing just like that?"

As he spoke, Hugh Langdon knelt, checked for breath under her nose, and then felt for a pulse on her neck. He looked up, squinting at the blinding sun. ’Did she really just get baked to death by the sun?’
