Chapter 100: Chapter 100: Cooperation, Employment Contract
Hearing a sound, Faye Yardley turned her head. The transparent protective wall from before had been broken at some point, and the people inside had all emerged. Their chains had been gnawed apart by the sharp teeth of the mutant white rats.
Faye Yardley glanced over. Many of the mutant white rats had bloodstained mouths, and broken fangs littered the ground.
Her gaze met that of the woman walking at the very front. The woman’s eyes now held a faint pink hue, and the others stood behind her.
"Make them stop. We can sit down and talk this over."
The woman opened her mouth and shrieked. Immediately, all the Mutant Beasts receded like a tide.
Finn Ford seized the opportunity to pop a Hemostatic Pill into his mouth. The others wasted no time, using Bandages to wrap their external wounds.
Then, like the rest of their group, they drew closer to Faye Yardley, shielding her behind them.
Faye Yardley pointed to the area outside. "Shall we talk over there?"
’Six zombies plus a horde of Mutant Beasts.’ Faye Yardley decided that discretion was the better part of valor.
’If killing them were as easy as swatting flies, she would be the one calling the shots, and she certainly wouldn’t be this agreeable.’
The woman nodded, simultaneously restraining the restless Mutant Beasts and people.
Faye Yardley glanced at the others in her group. "Let’s go back to the first break room. It’s a better place to sit and talk."
Faye Yardley walked directly toward the woman. ’I’m scared to death,’ she thought, but her face remained completely impassive.
Only after Faye’s group had walked ahead did the woman lead her people to follow.
She knew that if she didn’t restrain her instincts, they wouldn’t be able to escape the laboratory on their own.
’Just because we could break the protective wall and our chains doesn’t mean we’re invincible.’ Even though her mind felt duller than before, she still understood the basics. And her fear of the laboratory, despite her newfound power, was still etched into her very bones, impossible to erase.
After navigating the winding corridors back to the first door, Faye Yardley placed her hand on the switch. The woman and her people surged forward, even pushing past Finn Ford and Caleb Colby, who had fallen to the rear.
The moment the door opened, the woman stepped through, even before Faye Yardley. The Mutant Beasts behind them tried to rush out, but only the first few made it. The rest were trapped inside by the door. No matter how much they roared, it was useless; Faye Yardley and the others outside couldn’t hear a thing.
The red in the woman’s eyes deepened for a moment before fading again.
"Clever trick."
Faye Yardley shrugged. "It’s not something I can control. The original designer only allowed enough time for one or two people to pass through. Right? By the way, I don’t believe I know your name. I’m Faye Yardley."
"Chloe Hughes." Chloe Hughes gave Faye Yardley a puzzled look. ’Someone who can get in here doesn’t have the surname Lynch?’
Zachary Pierce and the rest of the group remained completely silent, focusing only on shielding Faye Yardley.
"Miss Hughes, after you," Faye offered.
’Now that the main horde of Mutant Beasts is trapped, the pressure is off.’ Faye’s confidence surged. ’It’s just these people. This is a fight we can win. I have the upper hand!’
In the break room, Faye Yardley found a comfortable armchair and sat down. Gavin Donovan perched on the armrest, spear in hand, ready for battle at a moment’s notice.
Chloe Hughes cut straight to the chase. "Get us out of here." ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
"And what’s in it for us?" Faye Yardley was just as direct.
"Isn’t avoiding the casualties from a fight enough?"
"Miss Hughes, if you can’t open that door on your own, then as you are now, you’re not necessarily a match for us."
’I need to get what I can out of this,’ Faye thought. ’I can’t just lead them out and make clearing this Dungeon even harder for myself.’
Chloe Hughes’s already dark expression grew even fouler. Her hands clenched into fists, and she looked ready to explode.
After a long moment, she said, "We have nothing else to offer."
The men, elderly, and children behind her all stared at Faye Yardley, their eyes blazing as if they wanted to devour her.
Faye Yardley silently called upon her system. ’Can I use the contract function?’ After confirming that she could, she relaxed considerably.
She put on an innocent smile. "How about this, then? We’ll sign a contract. We’ll hire you to help us kill the horde of zombies outside once we get out. I assume you’re different from those brainless ones, aren’t you?"
"How many do we have to kill?"
Clearly, killing other zombies was of no concern to them.
"Not too many. Between all of you, kill a total of eight thousand zombies. Once you hit that number, you’re free to go." Faye considered the numbers. ’There should be at least twenty to thirty thousand zombies from the museum. We killed a batch, now we can hire them to kill another. We can use the rest to farm points. It’s a pretty reasonable plan.’
’And even if it’s not, it doesn’t matter. We still have over two days left to poach some kills on the side.’
"A contract? Aren’t you afraid we’ll just renege the moment we’re out?"
Faye Yardley blinked innocently. "We’ll be signing a magical contract. No one can break it. Not even those from other races." freewebnoveℓ.com
Chloe Hughes glanced at the people behind her, then nodded. "Fine."
Only after the system’s contract was signed did Faye Yardley realize just how powerful Chloe Hughes and her people were. ’That was a close call,’ she thought with relief.
"Miss Hughes, do you know the way out of here? The path we took to get in would be difficult to traverse again."
Chloe Hughes nodded. Inwardly, she was also wary of Faye Yardley. It wasn’t just the strange, oppressive aura Faye seemed to have over them, but also the contract she had produced from thin air. After signing, Chloe could clearly feel its binding power.
With both sides mutually wary, their interactions ironically became far more harmonious.
"Follow me," Chloe Hughes said, getting up. "But you’ll have to be the one to open the doors for everyone."
"Okay." Faye agreed, then asked out of curiosity, "Miss Hughes, why were you in this lab in the first place?"
Chloe Hughes didn’t hide the truth. "My child was infected with an unknown virus. I had to pull a lot of strings just to bring him to this lab, hoping for a cure."
Faye Yardley’s gaze naturally fell on the little boy following closely behind Chloe. He had crimson eyes and a mouth full of sharp fangs.
The laboratory was actually located beneath the city museum. They emerged into a side courtyard behind the building.
’I have no idea what that Dr. Lynch was thinking,’ Faye mused.
’And the municipal government actually allowed him to build it. This must involve more than just one person.’
’What if Dr. Lynch and his team were actually researching the virus to save people?’
The system wanted them to uncover the truth, but Faye felt the chances of that were slim.
However, the moment they stepped out, they found that there were still zombies lingering in the museum.
Without a word from Faye Yardley, Chloe Hughes sent her people charging forward to take care of them.
And with every zombie they killed, Faye Yardley clearly heard the system notification: [Points +1].
’Wait a minute... does this mean I’m getting the short end of the stick?’
’I really miscalculated.’
"Let’s go. To where the zombies are thickest."
