Chapter 23: Reaction from their Side
Callum and his group rested at a warehouse near the freight yard.
Kimmy and Yunera remained close to each other, muttering words under their breathing.
Johannes and Evelyn observed everyone with great curiosity.
One wanted to strike up a conversation with someone. The other wanted to spar so badly against somebody else.
Unfortunately, the people around them were not exactly easy targets for either option.
The DASF soldiers barely spoke.
The Engineers were busying themselves with great focus.
The Medics double-checked equipment, water, and other supplies as if they were afraid of missing one out.
And Callum... he was busy staring at the wall. Whatever was on his mind, none of them wanted to know.
Johannes was unsure what to do, choosing to sit on one of the dusty wooden boxes in the corner.
Just as his butt sat down, the soldiers, the Engineers, and the Medics stopped moving.
"What happened?" Johannes noticed.
Kimmy’s body jolted in place, quickly grabbing Yunera’s attention.
"Sister, what’s wrong?"
She realized that Kimmy’s forehead dripped with sweat. Her nerves slightly propped outward as if she was experiencing something too difficult to tackle with.
"Its... I don’t know... I—"
Within her spatial vision, an almost invisible wave stirred the air. It was akin to a massive eye opening somewhere above the base, spreading thin lines across everything.
Kimmy gripped Yunera’s sleeve. Is something watching me?!
She almost blurted it out.
Yunera’s expression darkened as she observed Kimmy’s reaction. "Sister, you have to tell me what’s wrong!"
Kimmy turned east.
"There’s... an eye somewhere."
"To the east?" Yunera abruptly stood up, wanting to charge straight east herself.
The warehouse fell silent.
Johannes looked at Evelyn who shook her head in response. "I can sense something similar from what she said."
"Is it an enemy?" He asked.
Although Kimmy could create a powerful imagery in her mind, Evelyn’s threat detection wasn’t something to scoff at as well.
"No," Evelyn frowned. "This thing... it’s just passing through, but there’s something else I can’t explain."
"As long as it’s not an enemy," Johannes nodded. He had no intention to force Evelyn in explaining something she couldn’t understand.
At that moment, a loud grunt came from Kimmy, snapping the two agents’ attention to them.
"Sister, don’t go."
"I have to. It’s making you uncomfortable, whatever this thing is."
"But..."
Callum finally moved, stopping right in front of Yunera. "Don’t move."
"You—"
He raised a finger and placed it in front of his mouth. "The Commander... he’s doing something. East."
"This is his doing?" Yunera raised a brow, clearly not impressed.
"Not exactly."
"Then what exactly? Or who?"
Callum pursed his lips. Dealing with this woman... he could only imagine how much patience the Commander had.
"The Radar network has been activated," he explained, albeit vague. "Miss Kimmy and Agent Evelyn must have sensed the invasive sensation."
Kimmy and Evelyn nodded.
"Do not worry. It’s an important procedure. The Commander means no harm."
"Is this another routine of his?" Yunera snorted.
"Miss Yunera can consider it as that."
Callum had no intention to speak more, though the cold look in his eyes suggested otherwise.
Yunera slowly backed away. Callum’s pressure may have looked invisible, but its effect was very real.
"Sister, I told you to let it go," Kimmy tugged at Yunera’s sleeve.
Knowing she could do nothing with her displeasure, Yunera let out a snort before returning to Kimmy’s side.
With that out of the way... Johannes didn’t sit back down. "Radar network. Are your soldiers receiving something?"
Callum gave him a nod.
Johannes was taken aback. Is he making that up, or is it actually real?
"Did the Commander build a radar facility or something similar?" fгeewebnovёl.com
"Yes."
"What kind of information are you even receiving?" Johannes asked, skepticism still written across his face.
"Battlefield awareness," Callum answered briefly.
Battlefield awareness?
Johannes frowned, observing Callum once more.
The man carried limited equipment.
A rifle, one that looked as if it was loading large calibers.
A sidearm he could barely discern, still securely holstered.
A combat gear that resembled a special forces unit.
Standard amount of ammunition.
And other tools expected from a soldier of his level.
Even the other four DASFs behind Callum looked the same. Armed, armored, and silent.
But this revelation made it worse.
If Callum had pulled out a screen, Johannes could accept it.
If his visor had its HUD enabled, Johannes would not even question it in the first place.
If one of the Engineers had casually set up a terminal on the side, Johannes would understand it.
But none of them had anything resembling those three scenarios.
And now, Callum called it receiving battlefield awareness as if it were perfectly normal, then refusing to even explain more than that.
Johannes did not ask the obvious question—where are you really receiving it from?
He already knew Callum would not answer properly.
"Perhaps..." Johannes paused, recalling a strange detail he had seen earlier that day. "It has something to do with those strange structures outside?"
First, it was the energy that came out of nowhere, restoring electricity within the local area.
And now, it was this information transmission Callum was talking about.
Evelyn who was nearby, pulled Johannes closer. "Johannes, what are you talking about?"
"Evelyn, you have seen those large structures outside, right?"
"Yeah, what about them?"
She was confused where Johannes was going with this.
"I just thought that Commander Hans might truly be part of a more secretive project."
Evelyn’s expression changed.
"Or parallel to it."
"How can that be?" Evelyn questioned. "You talked with Dmitri. At that time, you realized he had no idea about Project HELIX at all."
Evelyn frowned.
Johannes lowered his voice further.
"Dmitri may not know everything. He might only know what Hans allows him to know."
Evelyn’s brows furrowed. Johannes’ words did make a point.
Her gaze shifted toward Callum.
The DASF soldier stood a few steps away, calm and silent, as if their conversation did not concern him at all.
Does he hear us or he doesn’t care at all?
She looked at the floor and whispered.
"If that is true, then Hans is not just hiding information from us."
Johannes nodded slowly.
"He is hiding information from his own people too."
"Or they were made not to ask."
The two agents fell silent.
"Johannes," Evelyn breathed deeply. "We shouldn’t ponder more, or we’ll lose Hans’s trust on us."
"I..." Johannes paused, then clicked his tongue in realization. "You’re right. Whether he wants to tell us or not is up to him."
Hans’s command business was his own.
They were SAS agents who had already placed themselves under his command. For now, they had to stay put and behave.
As they returned to their previous spot, Callum finally glanced at them. ƒreewebɳovel.com
He wasn’t angry or disturbed.
Their words were simply rubbish.
Hans had no need to explain anything to his soldiers. The System had already done that part.
Dmitri truly did not know what Project HELIX was when they first met with the agents.
These agents are paranoid... Callum was speechless, though he could understand where their paranoia was coming from.
"You should rest while you can," he said. "We’ll continue with the training in a few minutes."
