Chapter 600: Chapter 598: Xue Xing’s Breakfast

"Take all of this material back to Hui City with you tomorrow. It will be of great help to you," Si Wen said before turning and heading upstairs. Xue Xing watched her until she entered her room and closed the door, then looked away.

He put the suitcase aside, tidied up briefly, turned off the light, and headed upstairs as well. His room was next to Si Wen’s. As he passed her room, he paused. The light seeping from under her door told him she hadn’t gone straight to sleep.

Xue Xing returned to his room and closed the door. He threw himself onto the bed and pulled the quilt completely over his head.

Tonight was destined to be a sleepless one.

Xue Xing woke up bright and early. He went to the kitchen, washed some rice, and put it in the rice cooker, setting it to the congee mode. Next, he took some pre-cut meat from the refrigerator, seasoned it with soy sauce, oil, and shredded ginger, and set it aside to marinate. He was determined to use every available moment to learn, so he then grabbed a notebook and began to study.

When Si Wen came downstairs, she saw Xue Xing studying intently. Not wanting to disturb him, she walked quietly into the kitchen, where she was immediately greeted by the fragrant aroma of congee.

This guy is up pretty early. The congee’s almost done.

Then, Si Wen noticed the marinated lean meat on the counter and realized what kind of congee he was making. Just as she was hesitating over whether to lend a hand, she heard Xue Xing’s voice.

"Sister Si Wen, you’re awake!"

"Yes. You made congee?"

"I did. It’s almost ready. I just need to add the lean meat, and then we can eat. Sister Si Wen, could you wait outside for a moment?"

Xue Xing opened the rice cooker, poured in the lean meat, and gave it a few stirs before closing the lid again. Before long, a savory, meaty aroma filled the entire kitchen. The scent immediately whetted Si Wen’s appetite.

"It smells so good."

"Sister Si Wen, I’ll get you a bowl."

Xue Xing got two sets of bowls and chopsticks. He opened the rice cooker, ladled out two bowls of congee, and carried them out to the table with Si Wen following close behind.

"Sister Si Wen, it’s ready."

Si Wen didn’t stand on ceremony and sat right down, carefully sipping the congee. The flavor wasn’t too salty or too bland—it was just right. Moreover, Xue Xing had added the perfect amount of lean meat, and the timing was perfect as well. The meat was fragrant and the ingredients were generous. Every spoonful was deeply satisfying.

Si Wen couldn’t quite put her finger on it. All she knew was that it was incredibly delicious—better than any congee she’d had before, even from star-rated chefs.

Seeing how eagerly Si Wen was eating, Xue Xing quickly said, "Slow down. There’s more in the pot."

Si Wen finished her bowl in no time. "More, please."

Xue Xing gave a helpless smile, took her bowl, and ladled her another.

This time, Si Wen ate more slowly. Xue Xing finally sat down and started on his own congee.

"I never would have guessed you were so good at making congee."

"I’m only really good at making congee and soup," Xue Xing said after swallowing a spoonful. "Everything else is a far cry from this."

"Your other dishes are excellent, too! Not much different from what your brother makes, I’d say."

At the mention of his brother, Xue Xing looked a little crestfallen. "I’ve never even tasted my brother’s cooking."
