Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Who Is Behind it?

They lean into it, studying it-- the suspect is young, dark hair, blue eyes, pale skin.

Adrian suddenly freezes, staring at the photo. "Wait- he looked familiar! I think I know him!"

---

Adrian looks closely at the picture. "Im not sure...but he looks like the captain of silver fangs."

"Silver fangs?" Jason’s father, Adam, repeats in surprise, "but why would he through all this trouble just to attack Nyra when he doesn’t even reside in Moon-Crest!?"

Adrian looks just as confused. "We fought against them in silver fangs last year and won. I guess he’s still holding the grudge?"

Jason doesn’t buy it. "No, I don’t think that’s the only motive. No one would travel down several hours just to fight a grudge from last year-- there has to be something else."

Nyra stands there, stunned. The guy looks like a senior, one she has never seen before in her life. Why would he attack her specifically even if he wanted revenge?

Adams also doesn’t seem convinced. "Go home. All of you..." he glances at the injuries on both young men, "It might take a while, but we have to bring him in for questioning. And if we find something else, I’ll call you all back."

"Thank you." Nyra nods, following both Alphas back to the entrance of the station.

Right on cue, Julian runs into them the moment they walk out. He completely ignores Adrian’s existence. "And what happened? Why do you two look so grim?"

Nyra tries to shrug it off, even though all three boys can see she’s clearly shaken. "He is captain of silver fangs combat teams, they’re still investigating."

Julian sighs. "And we can’t even question the other juniors anymore. Not after a certain Alpha almost beat one of them to death."

He doesn’t glance at Adrian, but the accusation is obvious. They had to strike a deal with the boys not to get them involved if they didn’t report Adrian for assault-- so somehow he only made it worse.

"He’s lucky I didn’t even kill him." Adrian argues defensively.

"Then maybe we should go ahead and kill you too for doing even worse shit to the same girl you were protecting-"

"Okay, okay, it’s enough!" Nyra cuts them off before it can escalate. "Can we just all call it a day? I’m tired, and you both are seriously too injured to be arguing."

Adrian visibly softens at her tone, and Julian hates that he notices. "Do you want to come back to the condo?" He says quietly. "I can drive you there-"

Nyra shakes her head. "I’ll just keep staying with Julian and Elena. You can leave without me.."

Jason snorts from behind them. "You heard her..now can you leave?"

Adrian shoots him a glare. "I wasn’t asking you."

"And no one asked you to follow her everywhere either."

Nyra sighs, rubbing her temples. "Can both of you stop? I’m not going anywhere with either of you right now."

She steps away from both of them, grabbing Julian’s arm. "Let’s go home."

Two days later at the academy, Nyra finally decides to visit the instructor in charge of the arts competition.

She’s about to knock on the director’s door, when the sound of yelling stops her short.

"I deserved that spot!" a female voice cries from inside. "You promised it was mine!"

"I already told you," the director replies, trying to calm the student down. "It was above me...I had to change the list."

"So you gave it to that defective girl? Because she’s the future Luna?"

Nyra’s heart drops. Are they talking about her?

She pushes the door open without thinking.

Inside, the director and one of the academy’s most popular senior arts majors are standing very close.

Close enough that she knows there’s nothing professional about their relationship.

Oh.

Both of them look around to see who interrupted them, when the senior’s glare lands on Nyra.

"So," she says coldly. "How do you feel after getting the future Alpha to do your dirty work for you little witch!" freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Nyra looks stunned. She knows Adrian got her name in the list, but what exactly did he do to make this senior so upset?

"And you should be ashamed that you’re using your body to get favors!" Adrian’s voice cuts in behind them, before Nyra can even respond to the accusation. Most of his wounds have healed now, and he looks handsome as ever.

All three heads snap towards him. The director looks embarrassed at the whole situation, refusing to meet their eyes.

"If I decided to report you to the Alpha, do you know what would happen?"

The girl instantly looks scared. She wipes her tears, trying to look composed. "N-no. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean-"

"Not me." He crosses his arms, "Tell that to the person you insulted."

The girl looks like she’d rather eat stone, but she does it anyway. "I- I’m sorry Nyra." She doesn’t look at any of them as she runs away from the office.

Nyra face palms herself. 1What is he even doing here?

"Umm director.." Nyra turns back to find the petrified man, ignoring Adrian. "I actually came to tell you I won’t be able to join the competition."

"What!?"

Adrian and the man ask at the same time.

The director regains composure first, "But why..?" Nyra almost feels bad that she made them argue for nothing.

"Exactly..." Adrian comes closer, "Why?"

"Personal reasons." She says dropping the envelope onto the table. "But thank you for the opportunity."

Then without another word to Adrian or the director, she turns and leaves the office.

Of course Adrian doesn’t get the hint and keeps following her, refusing to leave no matter how fast she walks.

"Tell me why you rejected the arts competition invitation!"

Nyra finally stops and spins around with an annoyed sigh. "What do you want, Adrian? And why are you even in the junior building?"

He opens his mouth, then suddenly pauses, as though he’d just remembered something important.

"Oh... right. I actually wanted to take you somewhere.."

Before Nyra can ask what he means, he reaches for her hand.

"Adrian-"

"Just trust me."

"I really don’t think you’re in a position to say that-"

But he only offers a nervous smile, grabs her wrist, and starts leading them down the hallway before she can protest.
