Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Where Is My Mate!?

Adrian doesn’t wait. He fights through the pain, jerking back to his feet. He doesn’t even bother getting into the car.

He shifts. Right there, on the staircase, bones cracking, until he fully transforms.

His enormous black wolf bursts into the night, sprinting through Moon-Crest Forest with only one thought.

Find her before it’s too late.

--

Adrian’s massive black wolf tears through the hotel, and into the Moon-Crest Forest, paws pounding the earth. He moves so fast that the trees blur past him with every step.

He can still feel the sharp pain from the bond with every step, but the need to reach Nyra overrides everything. He follows the faint pull, weaving between huge trees until he reaches the outskirts of Moon-Crest.

The bond continues to pull him until he reaches deep in the eastern woods. He knows the area.

What is Nyra doing in such dangerous territory!?!

He skids to a stop in a small clearing, claws digging into the ground.

The bond tells him she’s here, but he can’t see anything.

What the fuck!?

There’s only forest and an unnatural stillness around the area, that makes his hair stand on end.

Adrian shifts back to human form, breathing hard. "Nyra!" he shouts, circling the area. "Where are you?!"

He even tries to reach the bond, but it looks like she’s blocked it now. Even the pain in his chest has stopped.

Adrian almost thinks everything was an illusion, until he remembers someone he’d learnt in class two weeks ago.

Some very powerful oracles or witches have the ability to mask themselves with a protection spell, and only people permitted or exempted from the spell can see, smell, or find them.

He exhales loudly. That explains why whoever they came to see stays in such a dangerous part. No one can see her.

He might be standing right in front of her house right now, and not know it’s right there.

Fuck!

At least the bond doesn’t seem to be broken. It’s stretched, but it’s still there for whatever reason.

Had the ritual...failed?

He’s still grovelling in his own failure, when he hears three low growl sounds behind him.

Three rogue wolves emerge from behind some threes. They look extremely lean, and have several scars on their bodies.

But their eyes...it’s glowing with hatred.

Adrian recognizes the largest one immediately. These were the wolves his father banished two years ago for trying to challenge pack authority.

They used to be high ranking wolves, well look at them now..

"Well, well," the leader snarls, shifting to human form, conforming Adrian’s suspicion. "If it isn’t Alpha Darius’ precious son. Does daddy know you’re here in our territory now!?"

Adrian stands tall despite the exhaustion from running all the way here. "Look, I don’t want trouble. I’m about to leave-"

"Like we’ll let you go like that." The rogues laugh. "You’re alone, pup. No pack to save you now."

He switched back to his wolf form, and attacks without warning.

Adrian shifts mid-leap, faster and stronger than they anticipate from a nineteen year old.

He collides with the leader head on, his red eyes filled with blood lust.

The fight between is bloody.

Adrian is much quicker and stronger than they ever anticipated, especially in his wolf form.

He uses his claws to slash deep wounds across the rogues, aiming to scare them away, but they don’t. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

They instead work together, and start attacking him all.at once from different sides.

One manages to tear a deep wound into one of his front leg to slow him down. He howls in pain, and another one uses that opening to sink its teeth into his shoulder.

Pain burst through his body as his own blood soaks his dark fur.

Despite the pain, Adrian fights them with everything. He seizes one rogue and hurdles him hard against a tree. He doesn’t get back up.

The second rogue turned and ran after Adrian ripped away a huge chunk of flesh from his side.

While the leader limped away, after seeing his companions run away, knowing he can’t take Adrian one on one.

Adrian wins the fight, but there’s blood dripped steadily from his many wounds and can barely stand as the adrelanine wears off. If any of them had even tried to fight him again, he would’ve died in these woods.

He shifts back to human, staggering away from there as fast as he can. Every step hurts, but he needs to get out of here before they come back.

After a while of walking, he finds a small stream. He cleans the worst wounds, finally managing to stop the bleeding.

It’s already dawn by the time he decides to rests on a tree to rest. Atleast other wolves wouldn’t try to come out now that the sun is up-- lest the human hunters catch them.

Then suddenly, he sees a familiar car coming close.

Julian’s car.

They don’t see him as they speed past on the narrow forest road, but Adrian’s wolf still leaps.

Nyra is in there.

He pushes off the tree and tries to follow, but his legs buckle. Blood loss and the wounds makes him dizzy.

He has no choice but to shift again, forcing his injured wolf to move. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

He follows as fast as he can, but he’s too weak to catch up with them. He contemplates growling, despite the sound attracting hunters-- but thankfully the car suddenly slows and stops on it’s own, smoke rising from the hood.

Something is wrong with the car.

In his wolf form, he can hear Nyra’s voice even from that far distance. One of the advantages the goddess gave when two wolves decides to become mates.

She’s on the phone with somebody.

"Jason? It’s Nyra. Julian’s car just died in the woods near the outskirts. Can you come get us? Please... I don’t feel safe out here."

Jealousy surges through Adrian like fire. *Jason.* again? Of all people she could call for help!?

His wolf growls low in his throat, urging him to go mark his territory, and this time he doesn’t try to shut the voice down.

He surges forward, intending to reveal himself despite his injuries, when a branch snaps loudly under his paw.

Nyra’s head whips toward the sound. "Julian... something’s out there."

Julian tenses, scanning the dim lighta. "Stay behind me."

Adrian frowns at the sight. But before he can reveal himself, Jason’s truck pulls up quickly. He jumps out, rushing toward Nyra.

"You okay?" Jason asks, voice full of concern as he checks her over. "What are you two even doing here?"

Adrian narrows his eyes watching their interaction-- and what the fuck?!

Jason doesn’t look at Nyra the way a friend looked at another friend. Adrian knows that look because it was the same look he used to wear whenever Anna walked into a room.

His stomach drops.

Jason is in love with his mate.
