Chapter 31: The drug
Abigail continued staring at the wine glass in her hand long after everyone else had returned to their food.
The red liquid reflected the lights above the table, yet she wasn’t really looking at it. Her mind had drifted back to that night again.
The strange man looked familiar, and what was that injection? Something in her mind said, the injection wasn’t normal... she hadn’t been feeling well ever since she woke up.
A long sigh escaped her lips. "I don’t think I should keep something from you guys anymore."
The laughter around the table immediately stopped.
Oliver sat upright so fast that his chair nearly made an embarrassing sound against the floor. "I knew it!" he declared dramatically while pointing at her. "I knew something was bothering you!"
Madeline immediately looked concerned. Miranda lowered her fork.
Abigail rubbed her forehead. "Why do you look so proud about that?" Abigail suddenly regretted opening her mouth.
Still, she knew they deserved to know. Especially after hiding it from them."The night I went to see Draco..." freewebnovёl.ƈom
The atmosphere immediately changed. Madeline frowned. " You went to see him?"
Oliver looked suspicious already.
Abigail took a deep breath and nodded. "After I left the hotel, someone attacked me." freewebnoveℓ.com
"What?" Oliver asked.
Abigail nodded. "Someone grabbed me from behind when I was about to enter my car."
Madeline blinked. "What do you mean by ’ grabbed?"
Abigail looked away. "They injected me with something..."
The sound of a fork dropping echoed through the private room. Madeline’s eyes widened.
Oliver froze. He looked at the calm Miranda and frowned. " You don’t even tell me"
" She doesn’t want to", she rolled her eyes.
"It happened very fast. I didn’t even see the person’s face properly." Abigail continued.
Madeline looked horrified. "Abbie..."
"The drug wasn’t normal either."
Oliver’s expression darkened. "What kind of drug?"
Abigail immediately wished she hadn’t started this conversation. Unfortunately, there was no escape anymore."It was..." she paused awkwardly.
Abigail sighed. "A drug meant for kidnapping victims."
Madeline covered her mouth. "Oh, my God."
"It was supposed to make me lose control."
Oliver’s face darkened immediately. His cheerful personality disappeared so quickly that even Abigail became uncomfortable. "What happened next?"
"Joshua appeared," Abigail said.
"Draco’s assistant?"
Abigail nodded."He stopped the man before things got worse."
Madeline suddenly burst into tears. "You almost got kidnapped!" she shook her head. "You almost got kidnapped and didn’t tell us?"
Several people at nearby tables probably heard her. Abigail immediately looked around. "Keep your voice down!"
"What if something happened to you?!" Madeline frowned.
"But.... nothing happened."
"But we nearly lost you again! " Madeline clenched her fists. Why is it always happening to a soft soul like her?
Oliver sighed. "She’s right," he leaned back against his chair and folded his arms. "So let me get this straight."
His voice sounded dangerously calm. "You got drugged and disappeared for an entire night."
Abigail looked away.
"And then somehow ended up sleeping with Draco."
Miranda immediately started coughing.
Madeline gasped dramatically. "Oliver!"
"What? That’s literally what happened." he’s a man, for goodness sake.
Abigail wanted to jump out of the window. "This is why I didn’t tell you, people."
Oliver rubbed his face. "That jerk, he forced you into marriage."
Abigail sighed. The more she thought about it, the more ridiculous everything seemed.
A month ago, she had been chasing HDM’s collaboration.
Now she somehow possessed a marriage certificate with the company’s owner.
Life was insane.
"Did you manage to get the plate number?" Oliver suddenly asked.
Abigail immediately remembered Joshua had indeed sent everything to her afterwards, including evidence and plate numbers. She pulled out her phone and opened the file. "I have it."
Oliver’s eyes immediately darkened. "Send it to me."
Abigail paused."Can you investigate it?"
Oliver laughed. The sound wasn’t comforting. "Just send it."
Without another word, Abigail forwarded everything. The moment Oliver received it, his expression became even uglier.
Abigail sighed. She had originally assumed Henry would deal with everything. Yet days had passed. Nothing happened.
No results. The more she thought about it, the more annoyed she became.
If the man could force marriage contracts into people’s lives, surely catching kidnappers shouldn’t be difficult.
Right?
Miranda suddenly smiled."Speaking of surprises."
Abigail immediately knew what was coming. "Hey, no don’t..."
"Guess who her new assistant is." Miranda giggled, getting their attention.
Abigail covered her face.
Miranda looked delighted. "Michael."
"What the heck is he doing here?" Oliver looked genuinely confused.
Abigail sighed. "It wasn’t planned."
"That’s your ex, Abbie...."
" Yeah....I know."
"The ex who disappeared." Madeline said, "You spent years trying to forget."
Oliver looked even more confused.
Abigail eventually explained everything to them. The warning about the hotel pictures. The fact that he somehow knew too much about her life.
By the time she finished talking, Oliver looked ready to commit a crime.
" We can’t trust him....He is suspicious." his eyes narrowed.
"But he helped me."
"Suspiciously." Miranda rolled her eyes.
"Everything is suspicious to you people?"
"Because suspicious things keep happening around you." Madeline frowned. Michael was reach freak with a lot of pride before they broke up, and he suddenly wanted to lower himself as her assistant to pay her back, when there were a lot of things he could do to pay her back?
"Honestly... He wasn’t wrong." Abigail rested her chin on her hand. When she thought about it carefully, her life had become unbelievably chaotic.
A mysterious ex-boyfriend had returned. A terrifying billionaire had married her. And social media was probably one leaked photo away from destroying her reputation!
Oliver suddenly leaned forward. His expression became unusually serious. "Listen to me."
Abigail looked up.
"No matter what happens, you’re not handling this alone." The teasing disappeared from his voice.
Miranda clenched her fists but nodded anyway.
"Don’t worry about it, Abbie." His voice softened. "Everything will be okay."
Abigail smiled at him. Before she could reply, Oliver’s eyes darkened again.
"That bastard better be on your side."
This time... Nobody needed to ask whether he was talking about Michael or Henry.
