Chapter 3: Don’t Deserve it
Abigail looked at Annabel in confusion, still trying to understand the sudden change in atmosphere.
Just a moment ago, the girl had looked ready to throw herself out of the window.
Now, she was smiling as she stepped forward and held her hand. "Oh my God, I’m so sorry for not introducing myself properly earlier," she said sweetly.
Behind them, Mr and Mrs William exchanged glances and sighed in relief, as though they had been preparing themselves for a disaster.
"My name is Anna," the girl said brightly, stretching her hand out for a proper handshake this time. "Anna Williams."
Abigail stared at her for a second before slowly shaking her hand back. "Abigail Williams."
The moment their hands met, Anna’s smile widened. Then, with dramatic elegance, she yanked her hand away and clapped excitedly. "Great! Now this room is officially mine again!"
She spun around and ran deeper into the room before anyone could respond.
Abigail blinked. She hadn’t even agreed to it.
Mr William coughed awkwardly while Mrs William forced out a laugh that sounded more nervous than amused. "Oh, Anna..." she muttered.
A few seconds later, Anna popped her head back out from inside the room as though nothing strange had happened.
"Anyway!" she announced cheerfully. "I’m really glad you’re here, Abigail. I’ve always wanted a sister! We’re going to spend so much time together, right?"
Abigail looked at her. Then in the room. And somehow, Anna still managed to smile without shame. Abigail forced a smile of her own and nodded. "Of course."
Very sweet girl indeed, she thought sarcastically.
Mr William nodded in approval immediately, grateful that nobody had started throwing flower pots at each other.
"I told you," he said proudly to his wife. "She’s just a sweet girl."
Abigail almost admired the confidence in that statement.
"Come," her father said warmly, turning toward her. "Let’s go see your room."
For the first time since entering the house, Abigail felt a small spark of genuine hope.
Maybe things would still be okay later....?
"Oh no!" Anna suddenly gasped loudly from behind them.
Mr and Mrs William turned around so fast that Abigail almost thought the house was on fire.
"What happened, dear?" Mrs William rushed over anxiously.
Anna stood in the middle of the room, pouting dramatically while pointing toward one corner.
"My ring fell somewhere! Dad, help me look for it!"
"It’s alright, we can replace it," Mr William said immediately.
"But that one was special!" Anna whined, already pulling both parents toward the dressing area. "Pleaseeee!"
And just like that, Abigail was forgotten again.
The maid quietly picked up her bag and gestured politely. "This way, miss."
Abigail hesitated before following her out. As they walked away, she glanced back one last time.
Mr and Mrs William were already crowding around Anna while she complained dramatically about the missing ring.
Then Anna lifted her head. Their eyes met across the room. A victorious smirk appeared on her face. Then she slowly closed the door while holding Abigail’s gaze the entire time.
The soft click echoed louder than it should have.
Abigail looked away first, keeping her expression calm even though something cold had settled in her chest.
Beside her, the maid suddenly sniffed hard.
Abigail turned in surprise. The woman’s eyes were red. "Are you okay, ma’am?" Abigail asked softly.
The maid suddenly stopped walking. "Damn it!" She burst into tears.
Abigail froze in shock.
What just happened?
The maid covered her face dramatically. "Such a sweet girl! You don’t deserve this at all, yet you’re still standing there acting strong!"
Her voice cracked harder with every word until she looked personally betrayed by the entire Williams bloodline.
Abigail stared at her helplessly. "Ahhh... oh."
That was all she managed to say.
The maid wiped her tears angrily as they resumed walking.
"Tell me honestly," she said emotionally, "how much suffering have you gone through already?"
Abigail lowered her eyes to the floor and chuckled softly. The question lingered quietly between them.
There were too many answers. Too many things she didn’t even know how to explain. But somehow, talking about it already felt exhausting.
The maid noticed her silence and quickly shook her head. "Sorry, my lady. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to."
Abigail smiled faintly. "It’s okay."
The maid sniffed again dramatically. "Even your voice is kind. This family doesn’t deserve you."
Abigail almost laughed at that.
They finally stopped in front of another room farther down the hallway.
Compared to Anna’s room, this side of the house felt quieter... older somehow. fгeewebnovёl.com
The maid adjusted the bags in her hands and reached for the key. "This should be your room now."
She inserted the key and twisted it, but the door didn’t open.
The maid frowned and tried again. Still nothing.
"Huh?"
She pulled out another key and tried that one too.
Nothing!
Abigail watched silently as the maid tried a third key with growing confusion.
The door remained locked. freēwēbηovel.c૦m
"Why is it locked?" the maid muttered under her breath.
