Chapter 32: ADVENTURERS’ EXAM, part 12

"You say you’re from Aria" the boy said as he arranged the firewoods and sat down close to it, like the fire was going to go out as soon as he left it side. "That place is beautiful, I heard it really close to the lost woods although that’s a safe part"

"That’s the main town. It is beautiful but the part that is close to the woods isn’t"

"Oh" the boy replied. He looked around as if he was looking for what to talk about then moving his gaze to the sky. "The night is beautiful, isn’t it?"

"I guess"

"I feel like I’m on a camping trip rather than an exam, all I’ve done so far is walk around"

"I mean I did have a partner but she left me"

"...."

"You aren’t saying anything" The boy said as he looked at the white haired boy that was sitting on the ground, his back against a tree trunk and a girl laying down beside him, her head on his lap.

"I’m just tired" Bell said as he patted Ryu’s head. "Haven’t slept since yesterday"

"Don’t worry, you sister is going to be fine. Thanks to the healing potion, she’s not bleeding and so are you" The boy said trying to sound modest. "You’re really Lucky I found you when I did"

"I know" Bell said, his eyes closing slowly. _i’m lucky to even be alive, but why did... Astoria didn’t deserve to..._

He suddenly felt Ryu clenched his shirt with a worried look on her face, Bell patted her head.

_Probably having nightmares. Don’t worry, I’ll protect you_

Bells body was tired, his eyes were wary but instead of resting, he shook his head to stay awake. That monster didn’t just appear at the camp by coincidence and neither did it attack Astoria by mistake. It was following him, but why? It also told him something, not from his mouth but inside his mind.

"You should rest don’t worry, I’ll keep a look out" the boy said.

Bell shook his head again and used his hands to wipe his eyes, he was feeling sleepy even though his mind wasn’t at rest.

"Hey,... what did you say was in the soup?" Bell asked.

He know it might sound weird but the boy hadn’t introduced himself - not like he cared - and he walked around with a huge bag filled with supplies but no weapon, it wouldn’t look off if he had someone to fight but the fact that’s he’s still alive and have some much even after two days straight was disturbing.

"Oh, it’s just a little family recipe" he said with a smile and stood up. "You don’t have any supplies but I’m sure your dagger and armour will sell for a good price"

Bell was feeling weaker, he eyelids flickering as he tried to keep them opened. The boy stood in front of Bell and reached for his dagger but in that very moment, Bell grabbed his arm and with his remaining strength, slid his throat open. The boy held his neck before falling to the ground, clenching his neck as he rolled on the ground.

Surprisingly, Bell didn’t even feel sorry for him. While knows how many candidates he had drugged before stealing their supplies? If he dies here, nobody will know how he died.

After seeing that boy had stopped struggling, he stopped fighting the drugs and closed his eyes. Besides, he wouldn’t have been able to sleep after what happened even though he was tired.

Bell opened his eyes to see the dead body of the boy that tried to rob him, covered in his own pool of dried blood. Ryu was also awake, her head still on her brother’s lap but she didn’t say anything, and for the first time in years, her eyes was opened.

She didn’t close her eyelids like she normally did, instead they were opened, looking at the corpse like she could see it even though she couldn’t. It was like she sense Bell staring at her, she slowly stood up and looked right back at him.

"Good morning, big brother. Are you okay"

"A...."

Bell was suddenly brought back to reality, he was fascinated by his sister’s eyes. It wasn’t like any he had ever seen, it was pitch black and instead of a coloured iris, there were little white dots that looked like falling stars. It was like staring into the night sky.

"Nothing, just tired" Bell said. He suddenly realized that Ryu just looked at him and asked if he was okay, like she could see his face. "Wait, Ryu! You can see, can you see me?"

Ryu looked at Bell a little longer, maybe long enough for him to feel uncomfortable then spoke up.

"No" she answered plainly. "But I feel like I can see you, I don’t know how to explain it"

"...Huh?"

Bell was confused, he opened the system and took a quick glance at Ryu’s stats. It didn’t seem like she learned a skill, so maybe it just her fifth sense. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

"Your voice seems to have gotten deeper and there’s a bad stench coming from you, but... your touch still seems to be gentle as always"

Ryu wasn’t acting like her usual self, her voice and face was still lifeless but at least she speaks, intelligently. Bell couldn’t help but chuckle, it was the first time he had laugh for years.

"Is something wrong?" Ryu asked again, her voice had a hint of confusion in it.

"Nothing" Bell replied and stood up to his feet, he grabbed Ryu arms and helped her stand on her feet. Looking at the sky, he noticed that the sun was already over their heads which means that it was already noon. "The stench must have been coming from the blood all over me, and you also have some bloodstains on you"

He carried the boy’s bag of supplies which was heavier than he thought, he opened it to discover that there was not only potions and fruit, there was also some meat that was wrapped in some kind of foil.

_Today is the third day and I only have twelve hours left to complete the quest_ The thought as he wore the bag on his back and held his sister’s hand, then continued their journey northeast.
