Chapter 19: Empty Campus

The other students came out a little later, and noticed how empty the campus was.

With all the soldiers gone, it was incredibly obvious that there was only one class left in an Academy intended to hold nearly thirty classes of students, plus staff and professors.

"Uh, I don’t suppose that anyone can cook, can they? Because that is totally not within my skill set." Yara asked, with a chin tilt toward the boars that were being brought through the side doors to the kitchens.

The students all looked nervous, then everyone turned to a chubby boy with a mage robe on.

"You took foods, right Jerome? I remember making fun of you for it," a lanky boy in leather armour asked.

The boy sighed. "Yes, I took culinary arts for six straight years. And my name is Gerry, we’ve been in the same class since first grade, Mark."

"Alright, we have a chef. And we have a school cafeteria. Now, we’ve got a bunch of giant boars in the freezer, so we should be set for a while."

Mark’s enthusiasm was spreading.

"I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the kitchens are empty. The cleaning teams emptied them. So, we’ve got meat, some ration cases, and anything else that can be scavenged."

Gerry waved his hand, unconcerned. "It’s unlikely that they found the actual storage rooms. They’re not near the kitchens, they’re over by the cargo docks and locked with a fingerprint code. Only the teachers and the foods students have access.

So, we should still have the long-term storage stuff that wasn’t in the kitchen."

"Someone go verify that. Or is Gerry the only one in foods?"

"He’s the only one. The rest of us were taking business or stem course loads."

Gerry nodded. "I was majored in restaurant management, with a minor in culinary arts, to be head chef at my family’s restaurant chain."

The men who had been bringing the boars inside followed Gerry into the storage, and then came out a few minutes later to give Sanchez a thumbs up.

If they had the majority of the school’s stored dry goods, they should be in good shape for a few weeks, given how small their current population was. Even if the Academy only had a week’s worth of supplies stored before the first day of classes, that was still easily two months worth of supplies for the people who were currently here.

And that was without rationing.

"Do we have any way to get more supplies?" Derek asked.

Kalli raised her hand. "I have a way to obtain supplies, as part of my class. But it’s contingent on us successfully completing quests. They’re going to be dangerous, and they’ll likely need everyone to work together, no slacking and hiding inside the Academy all the time.

However, I can get basic military rations, bags of rice, and some essential supplies."

Her classmates began to smile.

Kalli’s class hadn’t seemed like much when they heard about it the first day. But now? Now it was their lifeline. If they could complete quests, they could survive this nightmare.

"Wait, if it’s contingent on completing quests, is there a price to pay? I mean, we all got points for completing the quest that we can use to buy skills. So, do you have to spend your points for us to get supplies?" Yara asked, immediately grasping the situation.

Kalli nodded. "Exactly. I get points when we finish quests, just like everyone else. And while I don’t have skills to buy, I do have exchange options for supplies."

Sergeant Sanchez immediately recognized the situation. "I get it. You’re a survival class. Not exactly a combat class, but without supplies and civilization, nobody else will easily survive.

But you can.

How many points does everyone have? I have three now."

"We had five. I say had because I already spent mine to get [Holy Barrier] after the last battle." Yara explained.

Most of the others nodded, and Reggie shrugged. "Five points is what you need to buy a skill from the first tier. Since we didn’t have many, we just assumed that was all they were used for, and we bought the skills that we needed."

"That makes sense. I didn’t spend mine because I didn’t have enough of them to do it. If I had, I would have purchased something to help my combat power immediately.

So, for today we will have to rely on what is left here in the Academy. There are supplies in the storage rooms, we’ve got a whole class full of Heroes who have completed five quests and purchased skills.

That should be enough to keep us alive for a while until we can figure out what we’re going to do.

Unlike the Commander, I have no intentions of trying to attract everyone in the city to our location. We don’t have the supplies for that.

But if more of your classmates show up, I say that we don’t turn away anyone with powers.

It’s a calculated risk, but if they’re coming back to the Academy for shelter, and they have the powers to help the group, it shouldn’t be a loss."

Yara nodded. "More people who can actually fight would be great. I think that they burned through far more ammunition than planned, and decided to make a run for it before they totally ran out.

That’s why they suddenly accepted that mission and left. They knew that they couldn’t hold, and would soon be the dead weight that needed to be cut.

But if the Commander can set himself up as the only awakened one wherever they settle, he can hold on to some sort of power."

The students keenly felt her cynical tone, but her words made sense. ƒreewebɳovel.com

The Commander abandoning them to save his own skin seemed extremely likely. It was what every other student at the Academy who survived this morning was likely doing right now. Building up their own base of power and preparing to settle in for the long term.

Only, none of them knew the true state of things around the country right now.

With the power out, there was no news.

Other than the sky changing, and the surviving monsters, it didn’t seem too bad. If it was just a wave of monsters, as all the dead parts of both worlds had been eliminated during the merge, it might not be too bad.

Sure, monsters would continue to be a problem. But they could clear the cities and get back to something resembling normal, with a much more dangerous wilderness.

Or, it could be that more monsters were going to continue to appear.

If that was the case, things could get very bad for the general population. People without powers were not a match for even the rat demons. There was no telling how many of them were already dead after just one morning.
