Chapter 30: Erika
Today was a school holiday at the academy.
It was the day Raide went to meet Director Croana. Erika had been up since 8 AM, visiting both Flower Mist and Flower Garden. Even though she was only an investor, she had a long relationship with Marika’s shop, so she went to buy daily necessities. She had just returned to the house she was borrowing from Raide and was taking a breather with the black tea a maid had served. After going around to various places, it was already 11 o’clock.
"Erika-chaaan~, I’m tired~"
"Nn! Why are you groping my breasts?!"
"Minty, you should stop. If we lose such a good employer, it’ll be a disgrace to adventurers."
"Yeees~"
Minty suddenly jumped on Erika from behind and started rubbing her breasts while she was drinking tea. As Erika protested, Roll quietly came in from the left side and scolded Minty with a dissatisfied look.
When Erika hired the three of them, she had looked up the normal rates for adventurers. So she tilted her head, wondering if paying just the listed amount was really okay. She had also allowed the three to call her by name. Being suddenly called "Lady Erika" felt too uncomfortable.
Satour, who was drinking tea across from her, noticed Erika’s expression and spoke with a wry smile.
"Erika, you said you ’investigated’ us, but how far did you look?"
Erika’s movements froze for a moment. She hadn’t told the adventurers that she had investigated them before negotiating with Raide. So how did Satour know? It was possible Raide had told them, but... freeωebnovēl.c૦m
Satour laughed awkwardly at Erika’s expression, waving one hand.
"The instructor didn’t tell us, you know?"
"...Then..."
"We all noticed. There were people we’d never seen before watching Bell House."
"Eh!?"
"Sorry, Erika. We made it look noisy on purpose."
"Ah, no... wait, what?"
While Erika was still shocked by Satour’s words, Roll apologized from the left as well. Overwhelmed by the rapid flow of information, Erika took a sip of tea to calm herself. Once she had settled down a little, she looked at Satour, who continued with another wry smile.
"The reason we did that was for the instructor and the proprietress... or rather, for Bell House."
"The instructor isn’t all-powerful, you know~? Erika-chan, didn’t you notice? The stupid son of the Dwarf was moving way too slowly."
The "proprietress" probably referred to Niemi. Adventurers at the tavern sometimes called her that. Erika had indeed thought something was off. Normally, if you wanted to corner someone, you’d apply pressure multiple times to break their spirit. Yet all they did was harass her, with only one actual contact.
On her right, Minty continued in a carefree tone while drinking tea.
"We’re definitely rough types, but~ before we met the instructor, we were much worse~"
"Much worse...?"
"Yup. Probably... no, I’m sure the adventurers who gathered at Bell House back then were mostly thieves or criminals. Of course, we were too~"
Erika was stunned as Minty laughed cheerfully.
Why would that be? Even when she investigated, the adventurers gathering at Bell House were all high-ranking, from C to A.
"Before meeting the instructor, the adventurers at Bell House were mostly E or D rank. The war had ended, which was good, but it also meant fewer monsters, so we couldn’t make money."
"So that’s what happened..."
"Roll was the worst off... It’s hard to imagine now."
When Erika glanced at Roll, she turned her face away in embarrassment. Erika silently swore not to ask just how bad it had been.
According to Satour, making one silver coin in five days was considered good, and sleeping outdoors in the city was normal. Roll, still looking away, muttered:
"We’re grateful to the instructor and the proprietress."
"The instructor gave us fighting techniques and good hunting spots. The proprietress... well, you can probably guess."
"She’s really kind, after all~"
From what they said, Niemi provided cheap meals, let them stay at the inn, offered baths, and even hired adventurers for odd jobs and paid them wages. The two who currently helped at the shop were former adventurers.
The three of them smiled happily as they explained that the adventurers at Bell House now secretly worked for the instructor and the proprietress. Although it was a heartwarming story, Erika had something she was curious about.
"Um... are any of the adventurers... Raide-san’s lovers?"
The moment she asked, Erika felt embarrassed and lowered her gaze. The three adventurers looked at each other and laughed, then all shook their heads.
"Nah, it’s closer to respect."
"I can’t see him that way romantically~"
"The instructor is our master."
Erika felt relieved at their answers, but that only made her feel even more embarrassed, so she looked down again. Finding her reaction cute, Minty hugged her, while Roll scolded Minty again. Satour watched the scene with amusement.
It was a peaceful day with no problems at all.
