Chapter 1922: A Call to the Old Place
Once Jack sobered up, he transformed back into his regular form. He was rather surprised by what he had done and was even panicked that he may have unintentionally ended up killing some people.
However, after learning that neither of those was the case, he was happy.
"I can’t show my face to anyone now," he said, still quite embarrassed.
"Did you register your powers?" Ning asked him.
"Not yet," he answered. "As soon as I realized I had powers, I went to celebrate. I... I might have celebrated a bit too much."
Ning let out an exasperated sigh. "You don’t say."
After some discussion, the two came to a decision that it was probably not right for Jack to transform again without an actual need for it. At the same time, Jack also decided that it would perhaps be a better idea to not register.
The moment he registered, his powers would be recognized, and he would most definitely be captured and forced to pay for the damages. As such, remaining hidden would be the right call.
After sending Jack back home, Ning thought of returning home as well. It was late in the afternoon, so he decided to stay out for a while longer. He could help where people needed it and then return home some time later.
Neither Mira nor Larissa contacted him in that time, which made him a little worried about both of them. However, it wasn’t a big enough worry for him to go looking for them directly.
He roamed the city until the sun sank below the horizon and darkness covered the world.
As Ning planned on returning, he got a call. Looking at the caller ID, he was surprised to find that it was Larissa calling him.
"Hey. Is everything alright? I was hoping you would call me much earlier than this," Ning said.
"Can you come by your place please?" Larissa said. By the sound of her voice, she sounded troubled.
"Okay," Ning said, not understanding what was happening. "Are you near my house right now?"
"Oh, sorry. Your old apartment. The one that was destroyed," she answered. "I’ll be waiting."
She ended the call before Ning could respond.
’What’s up with her?’ he thought as he looked at the screen. Had she gained some bad powers? If she blamed him for gaining that power, then it would certainly be a worry.
’Why my old place then?’ he wondered.
The only way to find out was to go there directly. Ning arrived before his old apartment in less than 5 minutes. Even flying leisurely through the sky let him cross that distance so quickly.
Even as he came down, he could already see the destroyed building that was covered in yellow tape, the destroyed portions still not being thoroughly cleaned. It had already been two months since that time, and yet it appeared that the owner might be too lazy to do something about it.
Or was he just unable to?
’I shouldn’t think badly of them just because of this,’ Ning thought. ’There could be a multitude of reasons.’
Ning landed in the alleyway where no one could see him and quickly came out in his regular clothes, appearing as a regular man. He walked straight toward the destroyed house and saw Larissa within the uncleared rubble a floor up.
He crossed past the yellow tape and walked up the stairs, going through where the door used to be.
"This is unusual," he said as he walked in. The inside was fully empty of furniture and anything else of value. The people from the hero agency had cleared everything after he signed with them and placed it in storage somewhere else. Ning had taken what he needed and left everything else be.
He stepped past the broken wood splinters and collapsed walls, arriving where Larissa was.
The infernal stood in a daze, looking around her, seemingly not even noticing his arrival.
Ning walked right up to her and still she didn’t react at all. "Why did you call me here?" he asked.
Larissa still didn’t respond.
Ning frowned. "Are you okay?" he called out. Seeing her not respond to that either, he directly grabbed her by the shoulder, pulling her.
"Aah!"
The woman let out a sharp yelp, quickly moving away from Ning. Her chest rose and fell as she looked around in a state of panic and confusion, before she quickly calmed herself. freewebnoveℓ.com
Ning didn’t move right away, merely continuing to stare at her with questions in his mind.
"Are you okay?" he asked. "I’m sorry for grabbing you like that, but you weren’t responding."
Larissa began to calm down, but her eyes still seemed wary for the moment. She looked toward Ning with a distrusting look.
Ning wasn’t sure what was happening, but he continued to question her.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I..." Larissa spoke with a pause in her words. "I came here to help you."
"Help me?" Ning asked.
"Your family," she said. "I wanted to thank you for giving me this power. So I wanted to help you return the favor."
"Oh, you got a power? Congratulations!" Ning said. "What did you get?"
"I can see the past," Larissa said. "I can witness it as though I were a ghost, present among those that lived back then."
Ning raised an eyebrow. "That’s an amazing power," he said.
"It is, and that’s why I wanted to use it to help you," she said. "I came here with that purpose. I wanted to answer the biggest question in your life. The murder of your wife and son."
Ning’s expression changed slightly and he nodded. "Have you used it already?"
"I did," she said, her expression continuing to change. "I came here and I used my powers to look far into the past to see how your family had died."
"And?" Ning asked. He was curious about this as well. "What did you see?"
"I saw you, standing before Sir Valen and making him disappear," she said, looking at Ning directly into his eyes.
"Who are you?"
