Chapter 1902: Something Missed

"Dear God! I didn’t consider that," the president said, falling back in her chair with her hand on her head. "If that is the case, then it could be anybody."

Ning nodded. "You can’t let a single name slide. Search everyone thoroughly."

She called in a few other people and explained the situation, telling them not to ignore a single person on the list, not even themselves.

"Will you help us?" she asked Ning. "I can’t ask many others for this."

Ning nodded. "Absolutely. If this isn’t a matter of incompetence, then I am more than willing to help."

"Thank you," the president said. "I am looking forward to seeing what the strongest person in recent history is capable of."

Ning and the other two heroes were excused for some time, being left alone to talk about the situation among themselves.

"How long ago were you called?" Ning asked the two.

"We were out of the hotel before 6," Frostveil said, a light yawn evident in her tone. "I can’t wait to head back to sleep."

Godhood looked at Ning. "I’ve asked them to allow us to look at the actual scene on our own. Do you think that’s a good idea?"

Ning shrugged. "Right now, anything is a good idea."

Frostveil stretched a little. "I’m hungry. I’m going to go look for some food around here. Surely the president’s mansion has some food."

"I need some coffee too, actually. Let me come with you." Godhood left with Frostveil.

Ning was left alone in the room, which he didn’t mind at all. He sat alone, considering how he was even going to find the people that stole those items. Was there a clairvoyant here that could help? Should he call Keira, perhaps?

’How do you get a thief back in the same house?’ Ning thought for a moment, coming to an almost obvious answer. ’You let him think he missed something valuable.’

"Something of value," Ning thought. "He already took the serums. What’s more valuable than that? How would I even convince him of that in the first place?"

The door to the waiting room Ning was in suddenly opened, and a figure walked in. Ning looked up to see the troubled face of Sharron Shoults, the genius scientist, walk in.

As soon as he saw her, an idea came forth in his mind.

The scientist greeted Ning with an amicable smile, despite looking tired and damn near ready to cry. She was moments away from letting it all flow out.

"How are you holding up?" Ning asked. "I heard it was all stolen."

"Not just stolen," the woman said. "Those bastards destroyed my life’s work. All the files and storage we kept for the data are gone. So much progress, washed down the drain in a single night."

Ning gave her an empathetic look. "All the backups are gone as well, I assume?"

"We didn’t keep backups out of sight for secrecy reasons. We kept two on-site digital backups, plus a physical backup with printed stuff. The digital backups were destroyed, and the printed stuff burned away." freēwēbnovel.com

Ning gave her a sad smile. "What about getting it all back? I suppose it’s going to be difficult to get back to where you were."

"Of course. The mixture that formed the serum was so sophisticated that it had taken us over a year of experimenting to get the right ratios and ingredients. Without the information, we’ll have to start all over again."

Ning nodded. "What about the book your great-grandfather left behind?"

"It’s safe elsewhere. Why?" she asked, suspicious now.

Ning smiled. "I have a plan. Come with me."

Ning took the woman to the president’s room, where everyone was in a loud conversation, trying to figure out what the hell had happened. Most of the people there seemed offended at the fact that they had been placed on the list of people to be searched.

Having their personal lives scoured through gave them all a big headache.

"Madam President!" Ning shouted as he walked toward her, beckoning Sharron along with him. "We have good news."

"What?" the president stood up, the rest of the people there going quiet. "Did you find the culprit?"

"No," Ning said. "But those damn thieves missed out on stealing something very important. Dr. Shoults here just told me that her great-grandfather’s diary holds the—"

He paused, looking around at the people watching him. "Oh. Uh... could we get some privacy? I don’t think I trust any of these people here."

The president didn’t hesitate to send everyone but the two out of the room. Once they were gone, Ning walked up to the president’s desk and took up a pen and paper, quickly writing something down. At the same time, he continued speaking.

"Dr. Shoults’ great-grandfather’s diary holds the information that was lost. Dr. Shoults has apparently made notes within it, which will help us quickly recover what we’ve lost. Since the thieves didn’t bother stealing any of the actual data, this shouldn’t hurt us too much."

As he said that, he finished writing something else and handed it over to the president to read.

The president read the piece of paper, her eyes narrowing as she finished it. "Will that work?" she asked Ning.

Ning shrugged. "What else do we have left to try?" he asked.

After a moment of thought, the president nodded.

"Dr. Shoults is the foremost expert on Aullazire," she said. "So long as she’s alive, we can reproduce the stolen serums. Where is the diary?"

"Back at my home," Sharron said, quite honestly confused about the entire situation.

"Good. Sir Blackfang, would you mind going with her to her house to grab the diary? You can head directly to the facility from there."

The president gave a thoughtful nod. "Just until she gets the diary. You may return after that."

Ning nodded. Having made up the plan, he turned toward the woman who was confused out of her mind.

"Dr. Shoults. Shall we leave?"
