Chapter 477: Chapter 477

But Winston Sheffield just scoffed, his face a mask of nonchalance. "So what? I couldn’t care less about money. What Sylvia and I have is true love!"

Years ago, the very first time he laid eyes on Sylvia Lancaster, Winston Sheffield had fallen in love at first sight.

Back then, Sylvia Lancaster was the treasured daughter of the wealthy Lancaster family. In Winston Sheffield’s eyes, she was like a true pearl, radiating light. For many years, she had been his ultimate dream, an untouchable beauty on a pedestal.

To finally have her now felt like a dream come true for Winston Sheffield!

As for the Lancaster family’s bankruptcy...

Not only did Winston Sheffield not care, he was actually glad the Lancaster family was bankrupt.

’After all, if the Lancaster family hadn’t gone bankrupt, if Sylvia hadn’t fallen from the heavens into the mud, how would he ever have had a chance to be with her?’

As Winston Sheffield saw it, heaven itself was helping him!

Hearing this, Wendy Sheffield found it utterly baffling. She couldn’t believe that her brother, who she’d always considered smart, was actually such a lovesick fool!

She stared at Winston, her expression a mixture of anger and disappointment. "Brother! Have you lost your mind? Her family has nothing left, and you still want to be with her? Are you planning to support her entire family?!"

Before Winston could even respond, Sylvia spoke up.

Sylvia let out a few soft sobs, then lifted her head. Looking at Winston with tear-filled eyes, she said sorrowfully, "Winston, Wendy is right. Right now, I’m nothing but a burden to you..."

"...Winston, you’re so good to me. I can’t bear to drag you down. I should just leave... Thank you for taking care of me these past few days..."

As she finished, a single tear fell, landing right in Winston’s palm. He felt his heart melt.

His arm around Sylvia tightened, and he looked down, comforting her in a gentle voice, "Sylvia, don’t say that. Since you’re going to be my wife, helping your family is my responsibility. I’ve never thought of you as a burden."

Then Winston looked up, his face filled with disapproval as he turned to Wendy. "Wendy Sheffield!" he said in a low, stern voice. "What nonsense were you just spouting? Look what you’ve done—you made your sister-in-law cry! Apologize to her, now!"

Watching this scene unfold, Wendy felt a surge of fury. ’Sylvia is actually putting on an act right in front of me!’

She shot Sylvia a vicious glare, then, unable to hold back any longer, she roared at Winston, "Winston Sheffield! Have you lost your damn mind? Can’t you see she’s faking it? She’s a manipulative bitch!"

"Do you have any idea how much she used to bully people back in school? And you want to marry a woman like that? What is wrong with you?!"

Winston grew angry as well. He frowned at Wendy and rebuked her, "Wendy Sheffield! How could you say that about your good friend? You’ve gone too far! Is this how Mom and Dad raised you? Do you have any manners at all?!"

Wendy’s eyes widened in disbelief. "I’ve gone too far? Winston, I think you’re the one who’s lost his mind! No matter how ill-mannered I might be, I would never stoop to seducing an engaged man like she did!"

Wendy pointed a finger at Sylvia, her face flushed with anger. "How can she possibly compare to Nina? How could you dump Nina for her? I’m telling you, if Mom and Dad find out, they will never approve! You’d better break up with her while you still can!"

In Wendy’s eyes, Winston’s career was on the rise. He needed a wife like Nina Summers. A woman like Sylvia would not only be unable to help him, but she would actively hold him back.

’If Winston had half a brain, he’d know who to choose!’

However, that wasn’t how Winston saw it.

At the mention of Nina Summers, Winston instinctively frowned. In his mind, a girl from a humble background like Nina couldn’t hold a candle to Sylvia. What he hated most was Nina’s utter lack of sophistication.

Besides, Nina’s mother, Mindy Walsh, was an overbearing woman. Even a junior like him had heard the rumors. Caleb Summers often complained to his father, Mitchell Sheffield, about how Mindy oppressed him at home. Nina was Mindy’s daughter—what were the chances she’d turn out gentle and virtuous?

Thinking of this, Winston suppressed his impatience and said coldly to Wendy, "Dad already agreed to call off the engagement, so you don’t need to worry about it. Besides, my affairs are none of your business. Instead of sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong, you should worry about yourself!"

Winston looked at Wendy, a flicker of disdain in his eyes. He spoke in a mocking tone, "I’ve heard you spend all your time trying to squeeze into circles of rich heirs, throwing yourself at them. Too bad they won’t even give you the time of day!"

"You!" To be accused like this by her own brother felt like a knife to the chest. Her face went pale, and she was overcome with a wave of grief and fury.

Winston sneered at her reaction, his words still merciless. "What about me? You do nothing all day but loaf around, scheming to marry into a wealthy family. How did I, Winston Sheffield, end up with a sister like you? You’re a complete embarrassment!"

"And you have the nerve to criticize Sylvia? No matter what, Sylvia is far more noble than you. A woman like you isn’t worthy of judging her! If you dare speak ill of Sylvia again, don’t blame me for disowning you as my sister!"

Wendy trembled with rage at Winston’s words. Her eyes reddened, and tears began to well up.

Finally, she shot Sylvia a hateful glare, slammed the door, and left.

Staring at the door Wendy had slammed, Winston frowned and muttered, "What a psycho..."

Sylvia had been watching the drama unfold this whole time. Seeing Wendy get chewed out and driven off by Winston, she felt a deep sense of satisfaction.

In Sylvia’s opinion, Wendy was an ungrateful wretch who burned bridges after crossing them. She was the one who had overlooked Wendy’s poor family background and personally brought her into elite social circles, giving her the chance to meet those rich heirs.

But now that she had fallen on hard times, Wendy had the nerve to turn her back on her.

Before the snow disaster, she had asked Wendy for help, hoping she could lend her some supplies. But Wendy just ignored her and even blocked her number!

Thinking of all the luxury bags and jewelry she had given Wendy in the past, Sylvia wanted to rip her to shreds!

Sylvia forced down the hatred in her eyes. By the time she looked up at Winston again, her expression had shifted to one of fragile, wounded vulnerability.

She looked at Winston and said in a low voice, "Winston, this is all my fault. I’m the one who’s causing you so much trouble."
