"Tell me the truth," Chunhua narrowed her eyes.

"When have I ever lied to you, my dear?" Hai sniffled.

"You don't tell me anything either!" Her nostrils flared. "Did you have anything to do with…what had happened between," she coughed a little embarrassed, "Jinhai and Nana that night…"

"Why would I have to do anything with it?" he blinked innocently. "They did the deed. I was nowhere near it. I respect everyone's privacy!"

The answer he got was a continuous smack of slippers across his head.

"Idiot! I didn't mean it like that! I was asking if everything worked out for them, for Jinhai…just like that? Did that scandal really just happen or had you created it?"

"What are you saying my dear?" He looked straight into her eyes while also trying very hard to prevent his brows from twitching.

"Everything just smells very suspicious…" her eyes squinted. "I feel a lot has happened behind our backs."

"Of course not!"

"Can I really trust you?"

"Am I not trustworthy?"

"No."

The point-blank response crushed Hai's delicate heart.

"D-Do I hear the twins crying?" His ears perked up. "Oh the twins are crying indeed! Let their super awesome grandpa give them a swoosh ride in his arms!" He beamed.

"Uh-huh…"

Hai escaped at a moment's notice, dashing to Jinhai's room with lightning speed.

"Phew!!" he wiped off his imaginary sweat.

In the room, it was only Jinhai, struggling to keep the twins in check and from rolling off the bed. At only eight months old, their hyperactive persona was already beginning to leak out. Jinhai could see the future crystal clear. The Liu villa was going to become a whole lot more chaotic.

"Hey, you just ignored your father!"

"Ignoring these two is a lot more troublesome. Nana will kill me if they get hurt," he pursed his lips.

Hai hopped on the bed too, joining the twins rolling around the mattress, giggling and laughing. At one point, they began to wrestle and tackle each other. The delight and sparkle in their eyes never once dimmed away. Once Hai jumped in, the twins crawled and trotted towards him, smacking their palms on top of his hands.

"Hohoho, aren't my grandsons too adorable!"

Jinhai pulled Jian to his side for changing his diaper, but the latter protested with all his little might and escaped his grip.

"...They are very calm when Nana does it."

Hai laughed. "Cannot compare ourselves to the awesome mothers."

Jinhai tickled him under his chin, something he had seen Nana do before. The glitter in Jian's eyes illuminated tenfold, and the difficulty of the mission dropped down from super hard to manageable. The diaper change reignited the twins' energy with the discomfort being washed away like magic and their tackles grew much more playful.

"Not that hard…" Jinhai's eyes slightly narrowed as he separated the twins.

The twins looked up at him questioningly. "Baaaaa???"

Not that they understood his warning, so they took it to be Jinhai wanting to play with them as well. freewebnovel.cσ๓

"Baaaaaa!!!"

Conclusion - Jinhai was surrounded by his twins from all sides.

He let out a sigh and let them do as they pleased.

"What did you come here for?"

"Oh me? Escape from my wife!" Hai said, quite proudly.

"What did you eat this time you weren't supposed to eat?"

"Nothing. She asked me if I was behind that banquet night…" he sweated. "But it was all you!"

His brow twitched heavily. "...Yeah sure. It was all me."

Baby Nian smacked his palms hard against his chest, as if signalling him to carry him. Jinhai took him in left arm and Jian in his right. A soft smile curled his lips, peering into his twins' black obsidian-like eyes. Feeling a gaze, he looked up and found Hai staring at the three in return.

"You want to hold them?"

He smiled, ever so faintly. "Jinhai."

"Hm?" He tilted his head.

"Be a good father."

Hai's eyes held countless secrets. Secrets he kept close to his chest. Secrets that would never see the light of the day. It was easy to decipher Hai slipping into the small gaps of the past - the past he had moved on from, but where the hints of its scars still remained lodged somewhere in his heart. Those scars, at times, crept a fear within him.

'Be a good brother, Jinhai.'

Was what he had said years ago to break the cycle of torment.

'Be a good father.'

Was what he said now to break that poisonous torment once again. One poison left by his brother. Another by his father.

Jinhai's grip tightened over the twins ever-so-faintly. "Yeah. I will be a good father. Just like you."

Hai's trance shattered in that moment, and he blinked rapidly, stunned. "Me?"

"Yeah. Who else?"

Hai couldn't find his words for a long time. "Was I…a good father?"

Jinhai smiled. "You are the best father. Jing and I are always grateful we were born to Mom and you."

"Ah…I see."

So I was a good father in the end…

Not like…him.

"Dad, are you crying?"

Nana, who had returned from the restaurant, had her lips slightly parted in disbelief. The two didn't come to realize her presence at all.

"Nanaaaaaaa!!!" Hai shone like the sun. "My dearest daughter-in-law is hereeee!!!"

Nana's eyes narrowed. "Who made you cry?"

"Ah? I am not crying!"

"I see your eyes are a little misty. You cannot fool me!"

Her sharp gaze then landed at her husband. "Did you do something, Jinhai?"

"..."

Before Jinhai could stand for his defense, Hai pointed at him. "Yes! He isn't letting me play with the twins! As a super adorable and fluffy grandpa, I feel left out!"

"That's preposterous," Nana pouted and taking the twins from Jinhai's arms, she placed them onto Hai's lap. "There!"

Hai burst into tears. "Only you love me in this house…"

Jinhai's brow twitched.

I really hope the twins don't inherit his dramatic side…

Years later.

"You brats, don't be so dramatic! Come here!" Hai exclaimed.

"Boooo!" The twins stuck out their tongues.

Hai grabbed their collars and pulled them back. "You two snatched my piece of cake!"

Jian asked quite haughtily, "What evidence do you have?"

"Jun told me!"

That tattletale!

"Hmph! Since you ate my cake, you won't get any spaghetti!"

"Spaghetti?"

"Jun is making spaghetti with meatballs," he drooled. "Such a thoughtful boy who loves his grandfather. Then there are you two!"

The twins blinked. "He is making spaghetti?"

"Hmph! You are not getting any, I tell you!"

Hai caught them exchange glances. "What? Why are you two looking like that? By the way," He looked around, "Where is Jin?"
