Chapter 103: Chapter 103: More to the Story
"Thank you, Young Master Lu! Rest assured, I won’t let you down!"
Watching the bureau chief scurry back with an excited look on his face after hearing Lu Cheng’s words, Shen Nian could only laugh wryly to herself. Her image of the man was now completely shattered.
’Then again, isn’t it time a certain someone explained a few things about himself?’
"I wonder what he promised not to disappoint you about, Young Master Lu?"
Shen Nian turned to look at Lu Cheng, a playful smile on her face as she asked.
Lu Cheng gazed at Shen Nian, who was smiling before him like a smug little fox. His face was filled with adoration.
"Are you sure you want me to explain myself right here, right now?"
They were, after all, still on a public street not far from the county’s Education Bureau. If they just stood there talking, the stares from passersby alone would be overwhelming.
At Lu Cheng’s words, Shen Nian looked a bit awkward. She really hadn’t been thinking that far ahead.
Now that he had called her out, Shen Nian certainly didn’t want to linger there with him. Forgetting everything else, the very thought of letting random passersby admire Lu Cheng’s handsome face was something she was a thousand times against!
"Fine. In that case, you can tell me all about it on the way back!"
’The bus ride from the county seat to Shuanghe Town is over half an hour. That should be more than enough time for Lu Cheng to give me the gist of it!’
"Okay. I’ll tell you whatever you want to know."
Seeing Lu Cheng so willing to cooperate, Shen Nian was finally satisfied. Once they reached the bus station, she immediately picked the two rearmost seats. That way, they wouldn’t have to worry about anyone overhearing their conversation.
Heck, they could even get a little intimate without anyone noticing.
"A few years ago, not long after I joined the Security Group, I made some good friends."
Once the bus started moving, Lu Cheng began his explanation without any prompting from Shen Nian.
Although she didn’t know why Lu Cheng had suddenly started talking about something from years ago, Shen Nian didn’t interrupt him. She trusted he had his reasons.
Besides, when it came to Lu Cheng, she was intensely curious about everything about him.
’Lu Cheng a few years ago... He would have been a young man in his early twenties. He was probably much more energetic, and definitely a bit more naive than he is now. But he must have been just as handsome!’
Shen Nian pictured what the Lu Cheng of a few years ago might have looked like as she eagerly awaited the rest of his story.
"Later, one of them—my best friend—was severely injured. While it wasn’t life-threatening, his body was badly damaged. It took a long time after he recovered for him to get back on his feet, and he ended up starting his own business. To encourage him, I gave him everything I had as his startup capital."
Shen Nian looked at Lu Cheng, listening intently. Even though Lu Cheng’s tone was flat, she could imagine the injury must have been so severe that his best friend had no choice but to change careers. ’Lu Cheng must have been devastated back then!’
And Shen Nian didn’t miss the flash of hatred in Lu Cheng’s voice when he mentioned that mission. ’Could it be... that there’s more to that mission’s story?’
