Chapter 443: Chapter 159: Meimei, I Was Wrong
The doctor scoffed, his tone contemptuous. "Save the child? She’s only five months pregnant. Do you think we can save the child? You have no common sense. For someone so young, you should go home and read a book."
"The pregnant woman is in grave danger. In a situation like this, there’s no choosing between saving the mother or the child," the nurse couldn’t help but chime in.
Qin Mei ignored the doctor and the nurse. Her gaze was locked on Jie Jingchen, stubbornly demanding he make a choice.
Jie Jingchen felt helpless. He had no right to decide whether to save the mother or the children. Recalling the time Qin Mei had saved the Hero’s wife, he asked tentatively, "Can we save all three?"
Qin Mei let out a cold laugh, her eyes flashing with mockery. "We can," she spat through clenched teeth.
"’We can’ what?" The doctor was losing his composure. They were treating a human life like a child’s game.
"Clear the room." Qin Mei’s expression was grim, her attitude utterly cold.
Jie Jingchen stepped forward, dragged the doctor and nurse out of the examination room, and shut the door. His tall frame blocked the entrance, causing the furious doctor to start cursing loudly. The commotion alerted the hospital administrators, but upon seeing it was Jie Jingchen, they felt both helpless and confused.
The doctor explained the pregnant woman’s critical condition to the administrator. Fearing a death on their hands, the administrator tried to pull Jie Jingchen away, but he couldn’t be budged. Neither persuasion nor force worked. Left with no other choice, they had to go call for reinforcements.
When Mrs. Xie heard her son was causing trouble at the hospital, the image of Jie Jingjue immediately popped into her head. She was furious, ready to march over and peel a layer of skin off Jing Wu.
"Jie Jingjue, what sort of madness is this?!" Mrs. Xie’s voice rang out before she even arrived on the scene.
When she got to the scene and saw clearly who it was, Mrs. Xie froze solid.
"Jing Si, what’s going on?" Mrs. Xie asked, confused.
"Meimei is inside, saving someone," Jie Jingchen replied.
Mrs. Xie was taken aback for a moment. She immediately convinced the crowd to disperse. The doctor was still worried, but Mrs. Xie promised to take full responsibility if anything went wrong, and only then did he agree to leave.
With only the two of them left, Mrs. Xie leaned close to Jie Jingchen’s ear and whispered, "What is your relationship with the pregnant woman inside?"
Mrs. Xie was a woman and very sensitive about these kinds of things. ’Please, don’t let my son have made a terrible mistake!’ she prayed inwardly.
"A colleague." Jie Jingchen raised an eyebrow. ’What’s with that look, Mom?’
A flicker of suspicion crossed Mrs. Xie’s eyes. She asked worriedly, "Just a regular colleague?"
"Yes, a regular colleague." Jie Jingchen was exasperated.
"The baby in her belly... it has nothing to do with you, right?" Mrs. Xie decided to ask bluntly.
Jie Jingchen’s gaze turned cold as he stared at Mrs. Xie. His low voice held a hint of anger. "The pregnant woman is Wang Meili."
"Ah?" Mrs. Xie was stunned, and her expression immediately turned guilty and awkward as she looked at Jie Jingchen. "Oh... it’s a misunderstanding. Mom apologizes. I shouldn’t have misunderstood you."
"Mom, in your heart, is that really the kind of person you think I am?" Jie Jingchen was very disappointed. She had questioned him without even asking for the facts.
Mrs. Xie patted Jie Jingchen’s shoulder. "In my heart, you are an excellent man. But, Jing Si, I have to remind you... if even I misunderstood, what about Xiao Mei? Have you explained things to her?"
"No," Jie Jingchen answered honestly. Thinking of the look Qin Mei had given him earlier, he knew she had misunderstood.
Jie Jingchen felt no sense of crisis. On the contrary, he was secretly pleased. ’Qin Mei misunderstood. That proves she has me in her heart.’
He knew he could clear up the misunderstanding with a single sentence, but he deliberately held back. He would wait until after Qin Mei finished the rescue, and then he would explain things clearly to her.
"Why not explain it clearly?" Mrs. Xie raised an eyebrow at her son. This kind of thing needed to be resolved immediately; even a few seconds’ delay could brew into a crisis.
"A life is on the line. There was no time." Jie Jingchen’s words left Mrs. Xie speechless.
「Half an hour later.」
Qin Mei opened the door, her exquisite features veiled by a layer of exhaustion. Jie Jingchen eagerly stepped forward to support her, but she dodged his touch.
Mrs. Xie shot Jie Jingchen an ’it serves you right’ look, then smiled and went to support Qin Mei. "Xiao Mei, are you all right?"
"Mom, don’t worry. The mother and the babies are both safe." Qin Mei gave Mrs. Xie a weak smile, but the expression didn’t reach her eyes.
"It’s not like they’re our family’s babies, so it wouldn’t have mattered if they were saved or not," Mrs. Xie blurted out. Her intention was to help her son explain, but she immediately realized that as a doctor herself, such a comment was a breach of medical ethics.
Qin Mei pressed her lips together but didn’t respond.
Just then, someone came running over in a panic, shouting anxiously.
"Where’s my wife? Where’s my wife?!"
Qin Mei looked at the man; he seemed very familiar. Seeing the uniform he was wearing, she recognized him. He was the one who had driven them to the hospital in a police car yesterday. ’What was his name again?’
