Xu Chunwang was also shocked and bewildered, but his expression quickly turned to one of furious accusation. "Sis, how could you divorce him? Have you forgotten our family’s situation? You had a comfortable life with the Jie Family, without a single worry. Now that you’ve divorced him and left, do you really think you’ll find another family as wealthy to marry into?"
Xu Chunyan roared in anguish, "You think I wanted to? It was your brother-in-law who insisted! He dragged me there and forced me to do it! What was I supposed to do?"
"You and my brother-in-law had a perfectly good life together. Why would he force you to get a divorce?" Xu Chunwang demanded.
"Because... because..." Xu Chunyan couldn’t get the words out, overwhelmed by a torrent of hopeless regret.
"He was away on business... Did you do something to betray him?" Xu Chunwang asked. ’That was the only way his brother-in-law would ever divorce his sister. He couldn’t think of any other reason.’
’His sister and brother-in-law had married for love. They had a deep bond and a happy marriage. And because he loved her, he loved her family too. He was always good to them, her side of the family, and he was especially tolerant of him, his young brother-in-law.’
His words hit a nerve. Xu Chunyan shrieked hysterically, but her voice was so hoarse that it came out as little more than a whisper. "It was your brother-in-law who betrayed me."
"What? You’re saying my brother-in-law had an affair? Impossible. Absolutely impossible." Xu Chunwang refused to believe it.
"Chunyan," Liu Guihua said, her face cold. She didn’t believe it either. She trusted her son-in-law’s character.
Xu Chunyan clutched at her messy hair in anguish, full of regret and resentment. ’Everything was supposed to be arranged perfectly. Why did Jie Jingwei have to come back from his trip early?’
Hearing this, Liu Guihua and Xu Chunwang exchanged a look, their suspicions confirmed. It really was his sister who had betrayed her husband, and she’d been caught red-handed when he returned unexpectedly from his trip.
"Sis, how could you be so foolish! You had such a good life, and you threw it all away. He was so good to you, how could you betray him? Did you even think about Xiao You when you did it?" Xu Chunwang chastised her, his voice filled with righteous indignation.
"Chunyan... ugh!" Liu Guihua sighed, her disappointment palpable. "I don’t even know what to say to you. You couldn’t appreciate the good fortune you had. You made an unforgivable mistake. The fact that Jing Er only divorced you instead of coming to our door to raise hell is a mercy. He must have done it for Xiao You’s sake, to keep things from getting too ugly."
Listening to their accusations, Xu Chunyan felt herself breaking down. She screamed hoarsely, "I didn’t betray him! He betrayed me! He’s with Lin Yaru!"
The image of Lin Yaru and Jie Jingwei together flashed in her mind. A sinister glint appeared in Xu Chunyan’s eyes, which were so swollen she could barely open them. A monstrous wave of hatred churned within her.
’Why did it have to be Jie Jingwei? Even if it wasn’t Jie Jingchen, sleeping with anyone else in the Jie family—even Jie Jianguo—would have been better than it being Jie Jingwei.’
"That Lin girl is with Jing Er?" Liu Guihua asked.
"Sister Yaru is with my brother-in-law?" asked Xu Chunwang.
"Yes! They’re together!" Xu Chunyan yelled.
"Impossible," they both said in unison.
She and Lin Yaru were colleagues and good friends. Xu Chunyan had brought Lin Yaru to their family home for dinner many times, hoping to set her up with Xu Chunwang. Unfortunately, Lin Yaru wasn’t interested in Xu Chunwang, and he had no interest in her either.
Xu Chunyan said bitterly, "The Lin family is despicable and shameless. When they found out about Lin Yaru and Jing Er... they threatened him! They forced him to divorce me and marry their daughter. Lin Yaru isn’t worthy! She’s not worthy of marrying Jing Er, and she’s certainly not worthy of being Xiao You’s stepmother!"
Liu Guihua and Xu Chunwang exchanged another look. Liu Guihua frowned and turned to Xu Chunyan. "Is Jing Er really with that Lin girl?"
Xu Chunyan clutched her head, her body shaking with grief-stricken sobs.
"But wasn’t that Lin girl head over heels for Jing Si?" Liu Guihua asked, confused.
In a hoarse voice, Xu Chunyan explained the whole story. When she finished, both her mother and brother fell silent.
After a long silence, Liu Guihua finally spoke, her tone one of utter disappointment. "Good. You deserved it."
"Mom!" Xu Chunyan glared back at Liu Guihua. She was already sick with regret, and here her mother and brother were, still blaming her. ’All I need right now is some comfort.’
Xu Chunwang said nothing. He was simply speechless at his foolish sister.
Xu Chunyan got up and knelt before Liu Guihua, clutching her legs. "Mom, please stop scolding me. Help me think of something. What am I going to do?"
"You’re already divorced. What do you expect me to do?" Liu Guihua was furious. ’Their family’s hopes were completely wiped out.’
"Mom, let’s go to the Jie Family. You can talk to Qiao Yanqiu, you can talk to Jie Jianguo..."
