Chapter 69: Unity Town

An ominous aura filled a dark hallway as Morbius walked through, his sickle dripping in bloodlust as he moved slowly and confidently.

Two guards; bearing long, dark horns, stood on both ends of a large crimson door.

"State your business!" The guard on the left spoke in a cracked voice.

"Open the doors or have your head severed into 2000 pieces." Morbius said with a snarl, his voice low but his words were unmistakable.

The blade of the sickle of Pyrus hummed quietly, light from the torch lit room subtly reflecting off of its crimson edges.

The guards looked at each other in surprise, and then looked back at Morbius.

Morbius took a step forward out of the shadows, his grotesque face was slowly revealed by the light.

"And then when I’m done, I’ll have you stupid ants for dinner." He added, licking his lips. ƒгeewebnovёl.com

"L—Lord M—Morbius... our sincerest apologies, we had no idea it was y—" The one on the right stammered, both their faces were awash with fear now.

"Open the doors!" Morbius interrupted, forcing the guard on the right to release a muffled squeal.

They both held long rods with lit torches at the top end of them.

They banged the rods on the floor twice in perfect sync, and the doors swung open with a soft bellow.

"Y—You may go in... Sir." The left guard gestures for Morbius to walk in but received a disdainful click of the tongue in response.

It was a dark lit room with an even more ominous presence resting deep within the chambers.

Morbius walked towards the end of the room.

"Morbius." A deep voice growled, filling the entire atmosphere with an unmistakably sinister aura.

Morbius fell on his knees immediately, as if pushed and held there forcefully.

"How dare you come here without a summons!" The voice asked, its words cold and jagged.

"M—My Lord, My King, this... is a matter that could not wait." Morbius’ neck had begun to tighten, he was instantly lifted into the air, held only by the invisible force that tightened around his collum.

"What could be so important that you dare to disturb me? Be reminded that if you fail to provide an appropriate answer, life and breath will depart from you." The voice which completely engulfed the atmosphere spoke again. The source of the voice however, could still not be seen.

Morbius swallowed even as his throat tightened, chills ran down his spine.

"My Lord, it’s about the World Tree—I killed the elder of the Tree spirit clan, she plans to fuse her life energy into the tree, along with a group of other elders, to revive it."

The more he spoke, the more the invisible grip tightened. He clawed at his neck, but it was of no use as he was unable to grab something that was invisible.

"This is news that could’ve been delivered by an ordinary messenger! Morbius, you fail me." The words rang through the walls, dark and guttural.

"My Lord—I’m sorry, please... I’ll do better, I just thought you should know!" Morbius begged, still able to speak although his cervical vertebrae was about to be crushed into bits.

"Even though you’re a disappointment, I can still find use for you." The voice started, Morbius immediately fell to the floor, coughing and gasping for breath.

"So the Elder Covenant is back together after all this time. It’s only to be expected that they will attempt to save the world again.

But I won’t let it happen this time, Morbius. Do not let them save that tree!" The voice commanded, in a harsh tone.

"Yes master, I will not fail you."

"If you fail to complete such a simple task, you will be sent to the abyss."

The words rang in Morbius’ ears, The Abyss was a place feared by all races, located at the heart of Helmand. It was a place of eternal suffering, the wails and screams of all the souls that had been thrown into the Abyss could be heard at intervals all throughout the Kingdom.

Morbius had already escaped the Abyss a number of times, so the mere mention of it sent chills down his spine.

The look on his face was one of unbridled fear, but he still managed a response. "Yes, My Master."

"Leave my presence at once."

Morbius hurriedly scurried out of the room. The doors opened up for him as he walked out, instantly switching back to his confident demeanor to scare the guards.

He faked a punch at the guard on his left, causing him to flinch lightly, clutching his rod. Then he laughed loudly as he disappeared down the dimly lit hall.

"That guy scares the fuck outta me." The left guard voiced out.

"Ditto."

Jacob, Xenia, and Light stood at the gate of Unity Town, looking deep within as the city buzzed with life, it was Jacob’s first time seeing different races all gathered in one place.

According to a few of the novels he had read in his past life, some of these races shouldn’t even be within viewing distance of each other, let alone coexist.

But this world had been different from the beginning. They both walked in. A tall, white-haired, extremely handsome young man, radiating a regal presence, every step was taken with practiced grace. A petite, beautiful, red-haired woman clad in leather overalls, she radiated elegance and controlled strength. A tall, red haired boy, handsome in a way that screamed ’royalty,’ but covered in tattered clothes.

They walked among a plethora of different beings. Jacob glanced around; he looked towards the far left, a gathering of elven-women giggled, glancing over at him. To the right, a group of beastkin men gathered their armor and flexed their muscles.

The beastkin in this word were very proud folk, especially the men. They were the first to die in battle, but their pride never wavered.

Light glanced over at some human women, his face flashing bright red, even he couldn’t understand why he suddenly felt this way as an adult. He had been around many of women as a child, but his body had never reacted in the way it did just now.

"We need to find out where Leon is." Jacob said as they walked deeper into the city.
