Chapter 2179: Chapter 2082: Taking the Fall
After all, nobody knew, after something this big happened at Tranleva’s base, whether that guy would fly into a rage and then dump all his anger on the innocent Emperor.
So Huo Sining decided to strike first. While Tranleva was distracted by the mess at the base and had transferred most of his firepower into the Malad Mountains, she moved fast, planning to get him out first and talk later.
For the three of them, this kind of thing was already old routine. They could get into that fortress-like base in the Malad Mountains; now they were just going to a private prison run by a drug dealer. It wasn’t even worth a sneeze.
Windsor Reed never imagined that while he was still racking his brains over how to rescue him, on the other side Huo Sining and Gu Xu had already gone straight for the throat, silently infiltrating the private prison where the Emperor was held.
The drug dealers themselves were in chaos. After hearing that something had gone down at the base, they were scared stiff by the news. Those who were transferred away to join the search teams in the Malad Mountains kept sending updates back to the dealers left guarding the branch sites.
Each of these dealers had their curiosity set on fire. Add in how bizarre and creepy this theft was, and of course they couldn’t hold back the gossip burning in their hearts. One by one, they joined the heated discussion, wildly conjecturing and overthinking the whole heist while huddled together, chattering nonstop.
These distracted drug dealers never imagined that while the front line was on fire, someone would sneak into the rear to spring a prisoner. With Huo Sining and Gu Xu using Invisibility, they had no way to notice a thing. Huo Sining and Gu Xu seized the opening: when one of the dealers went in to deliver food, the two slipped inside without a sound.
By the time those dealers finished their animated discussion and wandered back to their posts, they discovered a huge problem: one of the hostages who’d been locked in this private prison had vanished!
The few dealers left behind to guard Caesar realized something was wrong and instantly went dumb with fear, faces turning deathly pale. They knew they were screwed.
Right now, the boss was already in a towering rage, and yet another disaster had just happened. Even with their toes, they could figure out what fate awaited them.
Thinking they might get tossed straight into the sea to feed the fish, the guards all clamped their mouths shut, trembling all over without even realizing it.
"What do we do? If the boss finds out, we’re dead for sure!"
"Run. Staying here is just waiting to die!"
"Let’s go to Harus. Harus and the boss can’t stand each other. If we defect to him, he’ll definitely take us in!"
"Yeah, Harus doesn’t give a damn about Tranleva’s face. Even if we screwed up under Tranleva, he won’t hand us back!"
"Then we go find Harus. Move, now. If Tranleva catches us, we’re dead meat!"
Knowing there was no way out for them under Tranleva, the dealers held a quick council and decided to play the traitor, defecting straight to Tranleva’s business rival, Harus.
So by the time Tranleva got the news, those guards had long since bolted without a trace.
Originally, they’d grabbed that Emperor Caesar to use as leverage on Windsor Reed, to force him to give up the mining rights to the Malad Mountains. Who knew the base would end up like this instead? The warehouse, perfectly fine a moment ago, had been looted clean, and right at this critical moment, the hostage they’d grabbed had also vanished.
Tranleva was absolutely furious this time. He gathered his men and swept the Malad Mountains from top to bottom, practically digging three feet into the ground, but still found nothing. Then his subordinates reported that the men he’d sent to guard Emperor Caesar had all defected to Harus’s camp.
Tranleva naturally overthought it. He recalled the scene after the warehouse theft. Although those detectives hadn’t spelled things out for him, he wasn’t stupid. He’d already realized this was probably a personal vendetta, and the one who ordered it was very likely one of his rivals.
And right at this point, Harus just happened to step forward and openly oppose him. Tranleva, of course, immediately locked onto Harus as the culprit.
He was absolutely sure that the base incident, and Caesar getting snatched, were eight or nine times out of ten Harus’s doing—Harus pulling strings in the background, secretly hiring people to act.
He might not have proof, but that didn’t stop Tranleva from wanting revenge. Especially since Harus still held that safe of his, and what that safe contained were things he’d spent decades collecting. Just thinking about it made Tranleva’s eyes bloodshot as he swore he wouldn’t rest until one of them was dead.
Right now, Tranleva’s mind was full of only one thing: find Harus and take back his safe. As for that batch of stolen funds and weapons, he actually didn’t care that much anymore.
The entire base was basically scrap now. The core stuff had been emptied out; keeping an empty shell was meaningless. Tranleva wasn’t willing to waste any more time or energy on this base.
So after staying at the base for one day, Tranleva directly ordered all his men to pull out. He even planned to abandon this base altogether. As for that Windsor Caesar who’d been snatched, he didn’t intend to bother with him anymore either. Since he was ditching the base, there was no point in trying to leverage that Brit again.
Tranleva wasn’t stupid. Now that the base had nothing left, there was no need to create a new enemy. In his eyes, the Windsor Family wasn’t much, but it was still a centuries-old clan. Even if they were all the way over in England, their influence was no joke, and there might be other forces tied to them behind the scenes. If he offended them completely, he might end up capsizing in a gutter over this one thing someday.
So Tranleva decided not to keep hounding it. Since they’d already rescued him, he’d just let the matter drop.
Of course, Tranleva never imagined that he’d already capsized in that gutter precisely because he’d messed with the Windsor Family—and that the one who made him lose everything was just an unremarkable Huaxia woman.
Unfortunately, he had no gift of foresight and no ability to see through fate. Otherwise, he would definitely have regretted ever kidnapping that Windsor Caesar and thereby luring in a female demon.
Harus was the truly unlucky one here. All he’d done was, out of spite for Tranleva, take in a few of Tranleva’s defectors, and somehow he ended up taking the fall for Huo Sining. Tranleva pinned the entire base robbery on him!
