Chapter 2176: Chapter 2079: The Deputy Director’s Analysis

"Track these tire prints and target this off-road vehicle. It seems my previous assumptions were right. There can’t be more than five thieves in this group! They must have left in this vehicle!"

Janice’s face lit up with excitement as she spoke urgently.

Hearing this, Deputy Director Jin frowned: "But Janice, could you be mistaken that the off-road vehicle they used isn’t capable of carrying all those stolen goods?"

Janice nodded: "Exactly because of this, I’m even more certain that these thieves are really cunning. They must have anticipated that we would search for them, so they didn’t take all the stolen items. They probably worried that carrying so much stuff would attract attention, so they might have only taken a portion, or perhaps nothing at all."

"I suspect these people have dispersed away to lay low for now, and the goods they stole from the base are likely hidden somewhere in the Malad Mountains. Those thieves are surely waiting for the commotion to die down before returning to retrieve everything!"

As Janice explained, even Deputy Director Jin and several other investigative officers’ eyes lit up, increasingly convinced by Janice’s analysis.

However, Tranleva remained silent. Although he agreed with Janice’s solid logical reasoning, he couldn’t shake a strange feeling that something wasn’t quite right with what she said.

Tranleva wasn’t overly concerned about the stolen goods from the warehouse. He was only worried about one thing, and that was his insurance safe. He hoped the thieves wouldn’t discover his secret, and after taking the money, would just leave the safe behind and not take it along.

But, as Murphy’s Law often goes, whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. It’s as if the heavens didn’t hear Tranleva’s prayer, and the situation unfolded in a way no one could predict.

Just as Janice confidently believed that following this tire print lead would lead them right to the thieves, news from the Mexican police arrived, and it left everyone speechless.

Initially, the Mexican authorities focused their efforts on tracking large trucks but were met with no success. After taking Janice’s advice, they expanded their search to include all passenger and small vehicles, and based on further analysis, they pinpointed potential drop-off locations around the small towns encircling the Malad Mountains.

However, what was perplexing was that with a comprehensive net spread across all possible exits around the Malad Mountains, the officers were shocked to discover that no vehicle’s tire tracks matched the print they were following.

This realization left everyone stunned.

No one could clearly explain what was going on.

The off-road vehicle left tire tracks that clearly led out of the Malad Mountains, so why couldn’t they locate the vehicle? Did it just vanish into thin air?

From the mysterious warehouse scene to this peculiar off-road vehicle, the investigation team exchanged puzzled glances, each internally pondering a bizarre thought — could this really be the work of thieves, or perhaps... ghosts?

Even Janice, who was poised and confident earlier, now looked flustered, struggling with what to say.

The investigation had returned to square one, and no one could offer a meaningful analysis.

Tranleva wore a sullen expression, clearly frustrated.

Finally, the previously silent Deputy Director stood up and asked:

"Mr. Tranleva, I’m sorry, but my team might not be able to provide any further assistance. If you wish to continue, I’ll leave someone here. If not, we’ll take our leave."

Despite his annoyance, Tranleva couldn’t take it out on the police who came to assist him, so he just waved his hand and said:

"Thank you for your efforts. Once this is resolved, I’ll personally thank you."

The Deputy Director waved it off modestly, then signaled his team to leave.

"Sir, are we really giving up just like this?"

In the helicopter, Janice was evidently unwilling to let go, pressing eagerly:

"I think there are other leads in this case. The Malad Mountains haven’t been thoroughly searched, and the security team may be involved. I believe they should be fully investigated."

Unbuttoning his uniform and removing his cap, the Deputy Director sat back and, after a moment of silence, said:

"Janice, this case is beyond us."

"Why? Sir, do you believe in ghosts? That’s absurd. I refuse to believe..."

Janice’s wide eyes showed her unwillingness to accept it as she tried to convince him.

But before she could finish, the weary Deputy Director raised a hand to stop her, sat straight up, and looked directly at Janice.

"Janice, do you know I have just one year to retirement? Until then, I just want to fulfill my duties quietly and retire, perhaps spend my days fishing and sipping tea, enjoying life."

"But..." Janice opened her mouth.

The Deputy Director cut her off abruptly.

"You’ve been on this case all along and should know better than me—their operation is highly professional, comparable to international criminals. They have hackers, counter-surveillance experts, and master thieves. Such professionalism surely means meticulous planning."

"Look at what they’ve stolen—those arms, antiques, and gold bars alone are priceless, enough for a lifetime. So why would they waste time stealing an insurance safe and a car engine?"

"Most items can be carried in bags, but that safe and engine require professional dismantling, which isn’t easy. Not to mention, removing that safe is no simple task."
